AIM vs. MSN Instant Messenger

Recently people have been singing the praises of AIM. Is it much better than MSN Instant Messenger? I've only used the latter. I like using MSN Instant Messenger and I wonder whether it is technologically inferior, or whether ppl just shy away from it coz it's Microsoft.

MarkH, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heart emoticons, btw!

MarkH, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

trillian kicks both their corporate asses

Queen I am neither Buffy nor the Messiah G, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is that some kinda open source thing?

MarkH, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

possibly, it is freeware combining aim/yahoo/icq/irc and msn - trillian.cc or trillian.com I think, but it's PC only - I know there is a mac equivalent, jsut not sure of the name. But trillian is ad/spyware free which is very nice - some of t he other folks on here also use it.

Queen I am neither Buffy nor the Messiah G, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gimme MSN.

geoff s., Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AIM, because more people that I know have it.

jel --, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fire (the apple equivalent of Trillian) SUXORS major DOODOO. You can't delete people from it because the next time it just shows up again! Secondly if you block someone, he (or she) sends you some message, my program crashes. Actually it just acts strange fool stoppah. But yeah AIM is the way to go, Mark.

nathalie, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ICQ's always worked fine for me

Matt, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i really think that there's nothing wrong with the other services, it's just that ilx seems to be mainly using AIM, so that's where the most peoples are... i do find icq annoying because of the numbers (instead of names) and irc seems to be not as practical (can you even send an individual user a message? not sure.)

Ron, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah well, MattFallaize (all the more interesting names appeared to already be taken) on AIM and Barman (or, 158742249) on ICQ, if anoyone's interested. I am awfully bored.

Matt, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Think I may have inadvertently fucked someone off just now by virtue of not actually knowing what I was doing. My apologies. Name began with a z.

Matt, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It was me. I called you to the caht and then you went on adn off, Strange

Chupa-Cabras, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry. you must bear in mind that I know precisely nothing about computers

Matt, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

chupa cabras is the official cruise director of ilx AIM. The Julie McCoy of this Love Boat.

Ron, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*blushes* hmmm... thanx

Chupa-Cabras, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i want aol aim + msn do you have that

ashley miller, Friday, 27 December 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Ive always hated ICQ. It's so overly complicated, and just looking at it hurts my eyes.

David Allen, Saturday, 28 December 2002 06:12 (twenty-three years ago)

ICQ r0X0r5! D00d!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 28 December 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually used to have a very low ICQ number, in the first few hundred thousand. I can't remember my password anymore though. I have MSN (though I mostly just pretend I'm offline) but I can see when my mom is online to download her Buffy episodes.

Anyone remember Powwow?

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 28 December 2002 09:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess no one does! How sad...

Kim (Kim), Monday, 30 December 2002 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
dont forget msn is in clear text. if you use this at work, observer/network analyzer software running on the lan can recreate all messages sent and received from the packets, and can be done at any time (same for webpages too of course). aim is, i think, encrypted.

(could, i suppose, pick up your bank logins as the recreated page will have what you typed in also, if anyone had any use for that info)

moscow taliban (gareth), Friday, 25 November 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Which is ironic because the last 2 corp places Ive been in theyve insisted on msn over other chat s/w like icq. Possibly due to accross the board windows licencing issues, I dont know.

(And I like it, because it pisses Jon off and makes him yap like a rabid little dog)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 25 November 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

Adium for Mac.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 25 November 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

they probably insisted on it so they could read it!

moscow taliban (gareth), Saturday, 26 November 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

i love adium!!

tres letraj (tehresa), Saturday, 26 November 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Okay Trayce, I've installed Adium and I'm on MSN right now at this email address. Where you at?

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 26 November 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

(And I like it, because it pisses Jon off and makes him yap like a rabid little dog)

Anyway, AIM is not encrypted.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Linking to a locked livejournal post. Thats just great.

You're a cunt jon.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 27 November 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't locked when he posted it, in fairness.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 27 November 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

AIM for people I know. MSN for strangers.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 27 November 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

the monitoring software we're getting can read msn and yahoo messenger content, but not aim, apparently. i'll test this out next week

calderdale in the 70s (gareth), Sunday, 27 November 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

When I used to talk to mostly american friends, I used AOLIM. Now that I talk to mostly european people, it's MSN. The actual strenghts of either program don't really come into it, it's mostly a question of which has the most ppl connected to it that I want to talk to.

I do miss the AOLIM thing where you could post parts of one message in italic and the rest in a normal font. Also, the use of hyperlinks.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 27 November 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Definitely Trillian! You don't have to make a choice with Trillian.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 27 November 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Dumb question. I just downloaded Trillian because I seem to be having a lot of trouble with AIM recently. I now can't connect to either of them. Does the G00gle toolbar block it or something (I've just re-downloaded that as well - I seem to remember that last time I had g00gle toolbar I couldn't connect to AIM)?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Trayce is touchy!

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Neh, not anymore I'm not. You just hit a nerve at a time I was really shitty about something else alltogether. I just wonder why you think M$ jokes are still funny in 2005, though?!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

You just wrote "M$"

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Why yes, yes I did. I have to speak your language so you can understand me!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Hey, kids, you're obscuring my "I am stupid and can't work AIM and/or Trillian" question. Help me please, then go back to your squabbling.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Trayce, you locked your livejournal entry.

PS - In case you are dense, I was making fun of you not for it being an MS product, but because it is garbage and no one uses it. Like ICQ!

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Should I be using something other than ichat? What's the difference?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Adium has tabs, works with a bunch of other shit, etc.

Or you could just go read the website, you lazy fucker.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Jon I use MSN because everyone else (and I have an MSN friendslist of 30+ people FFS!) uses MSN and DOESNT USE AIM! I have maybe 3 AIM buddies on a list, and TONS on MSN, do the math!

I dont care what I use to chat with, I just use whatever the people I want to talk to are using! You did keep going on about MSN in the context of IE though so I had to assume your usual microsoft bashing was a part of it - come on, its What You Do.

(agreed on the ICQ tho).

(I actually prefer Googletalk but no one seems to have taken that on).

(sorry Ailsa I'll shut up now hehehee I'm just playin)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

PS lets lez up Jon.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

oooh 30 "people"...

www.aimfight.com me....

my name is wizardishungry

I AM THE KING.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I know Trayce, but I am bugged by my AIM problems and I can't be arsed asking again, sorry, I am being tetchy due to lack of sleep and just general stuff annoying me. No offence intended :)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I havent used Trillian since MSN started blocking it from the damn Passport server ages ago (and I know that's no longer an issue, but..). I don't know what to suggest Ails, but maybe you need to tweak a firewall or proxy setting?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

47 people actually. And I know about 35 of them in real life.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I have... 171?

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

my aimfite score = 4311 :(

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Did I pwn you? (Hint: it helps being close to the belly of the beast)

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Did I pwn you?

uh, just a little.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

i use trillian and don't have any problem using AIM, MSN, or yahoo through it. make sure you type your name out correctly though. I know that trillian requires me to type out @hotmail.com as part of my username to connect to MSN (but Proteus, for example, doesn't). The others I can just use my username for that system.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

I should also probably point out yet again I have to use MSN - company policy in my last 2 jobs; MSN for work communique only - ICQ/IRC/AIM/Trillian were all banned. Thats all it was, really. Thats allll it was.

Do you still hate me Jon? =)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Two new web tools of interest:

Mabber
http://www.mabber.com/

mabber makes Instant Messaging even more simple and more useful.

mabber integrates ICQ, MSN, AIM, Yahoo and Jabber in one web browser-based instant messager

3 Bubbles, may be could be incorporated into ILM/ ILE infrastructure ?

3 Bubbles
http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/02/10/preview-of-3bubbles/

"Silicon Valley based 3Bubbles, which launches next week, is going to be an awesome way for bloggers and other websites to extend the conversation on the things that they write about.

They have created a very easy to integrate Ajax based chat interface that can be added to every blog post automatically. By simply adding a code snippet into the blog template, a link will be included in every post (think comments, trackbacks, and now chat) to open a chat window where readers can debate and discuss the post."

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 12 February 2006 21:59 (twenty years ago)

trillian with msn aim yahoo icq and jabber.
It's the best.

Only it does not work with wine under linux so I have to use gaim there (or kopete)

clodia pulchra (emo by proxy), Sunday, 12 February 2006 22:24 (twenty years ago)

skype

Mitya (mitya), Sunday, 12 February 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Trillian's tab grouping "feature" is awful

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Monday, 13 February 2006 00:21 (twenty years ago)

adium does the same sort of thing, no?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 13 February 2006 06:19 (twenty years ago)

Skype is pretty good but I don't wanna listen to other people's voices. It's too close to a real phone. ;-) But yeah you can instant message with it as well. :-)

So Mabber works on an internet program? I don't understand...

Trillian is ass from what I remember. So's iCHAT cause I can't use iSIGHT with it. hah

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 13 February 2006 08:23 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 13 February 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Gaim rocks.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 13 February 2006 12:44 (twenty years ago)

libgaim's file transfer support is less than robust

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Monday, 13 February 2006 13:07 (twenty years ago)

I haven't tried that yet :/

It just doesn't crash (yet) and is neat & sweetly laid out. I'm easily pleased.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 13 February 2006 13:53 (twenty years ago)

I haven't tried that yet :/

fandango (fandango), Monday, 13 February 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I use gaim, as I don't know anything else for non-kde linux folk, and it seems quite good to me. All MSN file transfers are flakey at best, so I tend to use gmail instead.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

is meebo the one that spys on all your messages?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

spies

ken c (ken c), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

If you have an account it logs all your IMs, but I think maybe you can clear it? You definitely don't have to get an account anyway.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

don't be shy, guys.

teh_kit haev been evicted, oh noes! (g-kit), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)
