Resisting the sarcastic comment

I was in my local supermarket and at the end of the checkout I said "And can I get thirty pounds cash too, please?" "How much?" she said. "Thirty." "Thirty pounds?"

I only paused for the merest fraction of a second while rejecting saying things like "No, thirty pee" or "No, yen" or anything like that, but it wasn't easy. I remind myself that checkout staff aren't paid enough that I can expect their brains to be switched on.

Do you find yourself having to hold this kind of thing in check? Do you ever fail to hold it in check? Do you not even try?

New oh yes I really think that's a good question answers.

Apparently I am much too sarcastic. A friend once commented that if I had been a boy, I'd have been beaten up for it. I think it has to do with my upbringing. Our family used it as a defence mechanism. But in all fairness, it is rarely done to hurt the other.

I don't have this problem. I'm eager to please and don't assume stupidity.

Graham, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin, you are of the pre-decimal generation who bought things which cost tuppence ha'penny, or thruppence three farthings. I don't know how you have the gall to even discuss financial matters with a check- put chick like this. I bet she is way cleverer that you, and is already thinking in Euros. :-p

I was really sure I had typed "check-out chick" and not "check-put chick". Obviously not. First day with new fingers, sorry.

C J, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People take my sarcasm seriously. Perhaps I am too straightfaced with it. I try to hold it in check for that reason.

Maria, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall try asking for Euros next time. I don't fancy my chances, in East Ham Sainsbury's.

Martin Skidmore, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of times I find myself having to stop myself saying things which I find really funny but are incredibly rude and/or offensive. It troubles me. Though not too much.

Ally C, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, really?

Matt, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have that problem too Ally C. Though not like a man I witnessed getting beaten shitless in a pub for making a rape joke in front of a guy whose sister had gotten raped only 2 weeks previously.

Lek Dukagjin, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, Ally C, don't worry a'tall: I sometimes start saying something sarcastic to someone, just from sheer habit. Usually, it isn't offensive. So, as long as you consider the person you're talking too, it should be cool.

Do you find yourself having to hold this kind of thing in check

I have tried not to be sarcastic, but I've given up on that, as it just slips out.

Do you ever fail to hold it in check?

Probably 90% of the time....

Do you not even try?

Exactly. I figure I've got many other good qualities, so if you can't handle a bit of sarcasm, then you aren't worth my time.

Rats. I didn't mean to italise _everything_.

"People take my sarcasm seriously. Perhaps I am too straightfaced with it. I try to hold it in check for that reason."

Yeah this happens to me too. I hate having to explain to people that I was being sarcastic, it's so utterly joyless.

Tim, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do italics look more sarcastic than normal text?

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does this work?

stevo, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No.

Lek Dukagjin, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have this problem
I don't see it as a problem.

nathalie, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, duh. A thicko like you wouldn't.

Graham, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would never be sarcastic to someone I didn't know. In the shop situation I would look bemused.
