balls: after some extreme wariness about fantasy writing I have been enjoying the first book quite a bit. Definitely has helped me understand what's going on, but also a good breezy read.
Unlike other people here I am not going to read ahead of the show, though.

I might read ahead of the show if the cliffhanger is excruciating enough. Might just jump straight in on vol 2 though, sure I'll pick up any extra plot bits and pieces.

it reminded me of the first three seasons of the wire when they'd throw in a quick sweaty sex scene every now and then out of nowhere. only if instead they'd also had mcnulty thoroughly describe a flowchart of the barksdale organization while banging that waitress. every other week.

The show is good. The books are better. And i don't see why anyone who's enjoyed the show so far wouldn't enjoy the books even more.

littlefinger scene was Very HBO, but i liked the way he said 'play with her arse'
i thought tywin lannister's introduction was gangster as hell. skinning a stag - kinda groanworthy as a premise but in execution it was awesome. nice way to get across how methodical and unflinching he is, and from a staging perspective it was a lot more interesting to watch than just a static conversation.

really psyched to see the hbo-style season finale ending with each story line getting capped off while jeff buckley's hallelujah plays in the background

People who have read the books: where do you side concerning the balance between experiencing the plot cliffhangers for the first time by watching the show versus having already read the books and knowing what the darn is going on.

Laurel otm abt Carcetti's pr0n scene...stared at the ceiling til it ws over. Ffs surely there is a better way to deliver exposition. (yes yes boobs n arses is better I know)...he is so fucking crepey I cant stand it. Great, but creepy.
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 04:44 (twelve years ago) link
it's not that he's gross, it's that there's something gross abt staging an exposition scene (with a long-ass intro before the exposition even starts) around leering shots of prostitutes learning to finger one another. i mean, i hate to use a word like "gratuitous" in this day and age, but come on. at least the skinning in that pther long info-dump served a purpose, developed character in a useful way. we already know that baelish is a sleazebag whoremhonger, we hardly need spend five minutes watching him mong whores to get this point across.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 08:32 (twelve years ago) link
I wonder if they established that whore from the north over the last couple of episodes just to have her in this scene.
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 09:44 (twelve years ago) link
roz q. exposition, the whore from the north

― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:32 (twelve years ago) link
maybe they can have her field dress a deer while nude
― Tom Skerritt Mustache Ride (DJP), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:35 (twelve years ago) link
also that scene is really going to screw with the TBS edit
Maybe there is some kind of nude quota imposed & they had to make up the quota in a hurry
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:39 (twelve years ago) link
the thing I took away from that scene is that Littlefinger is going to use Expositho as his pegging specialist

five minutes watching him mong whores to get this point across.
Not so much monging as polishing his wares. Even from the pov of pure, gratuitous titillation, the scene was too long and too flat. But like the Tywin scene (mentioned above) it served to underline that we're not supposed to like him. Don't know the books but the show is rather cartoonish though not in an entirely bad way.
― For one throb of the (Michael White), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 14:42 (twelve years ago) link
he's not particularly trustworthy in the books either from what I remember
my wife spent a good 5 minutes after the episode ranting along the theme of "why would you trust anyone who was in love with your wife? stupid ass"

one of the things I loved about Martin's story was how he took the archetypal "honorable knight" of fantasy stories and showed how that character just would not work at all if up against anyone who acted even halfway rationally

I don't remember that it was common knowledge at this time in the story that Littlefinger DID love Catelyn Stark! Iirc, you're kept in suspense for a while about whether he loved Catelyn or her sister, in their youths, and he claims at one point to have slept w both of them but you immediately disbelieve that of Catelyn so that just leaves Lysa...it's not early as clear as the show has made it.
