i also like any kind of pressed tofu (or any kind of tofu or shredded boiled chicken or plain boiled pork stomach), with vinegar and chili oil and black pepper and a bit of soy sauce but not too much and then a ton of chopped cilantro, put it in the fridge to chill. or, fuck, just cucumber, even, sliced up, with lots of cilantro and salt and vinegar and some mustard oil.
香菜炒牛肉: fry strips of slightly fatty beef until crisped right up. take out and clean pan. put a bit of oil in pan, throw in garlic cloves and dried chilis and hua jiao and the white part of green onion, fry fry fry, put beef back in, put a giant bundle of chopped up cilantro in, let it just chill for 10 seconds, DONE.
also love cilantro chutney.

Cilantro is very much one of those ingredients that I didn't really like at first but that I nevertheless felt an impulse to keep eating anyway. Cumin is one of the other obvious examples. "I don't like this but something about it makes me want to keep trying it. . ." Now I love it, of course.

i don't like too much cilantro in soupy things, but it's great in pulled noodles, esp. lamb variety, with a pour of black vinegar and some chili sauce on the end. damn. china is a cilantro powerhouse.

My parents both like coriander and parsley and I think both taste kind of nasty. Does this ruin anyone's theories?
(Fine with a little coriander in my curry sauce or a small sprinkling of either on something with enough flavour to mask the taste, but anything more than a small garnish is ;_; )

I know it's a weird story.. Until I was 22 I never knew what it was I must have smelled, I would just taste cilantro in dishes from time to time and be like UGH DO NOT WANT and finally a friend tasted my meal and told me what the problem was. I don't ever order pad thai or Indian food because of cilantro :(

There's a Mexican restaurant near us now where I actually like the like the cilantro on the tacos -- it's much less intense and soapy. I don't know if there are new varieties being developed, or if my allergy/aversion is fading.

Wasn't too fussed about cilantro when I first tried it. Now I actually get a small 'high' when I eat it. It really is awesome.
There is definitely an optimum amount to put on a dish, though.

the bird story. fuck. when i was a kid, i lived in germany and my sister and i had to take two buses to get to our international school. but they weren't timed well, so it left us wandering around in an empty bus parking lot every morning. there was a patch of wild green onion growing there, beside some unused railway tracks. we used to pull it out and mash it up between heavy flat rocks and make a kind of green onion sauce, for no particular reason. our hands were always green and oniony. the smell memory of it is so strong that i'll still think of it when i crunch into a stick of green onion.

i read somewhere that cilantro-hate was down to a certain enzyme that some people have?? it doesn't really taste soapy to me, but it tastes... unfood-like. i don't know how to explain it any better. but the taste of it always seems completely foreign and out of place to me. i avoid it like the plague.

Taste and smell are intertwined of course, but I definately taste cilantro. We eat a lot of fresh herbs as vegetables (rather than seasonings/garnishes) however -- dill, cilantro, basil, various types of mint. My partner prepares a lot of traditional Vietnamese and Lao dishes, and cilantro is a staple of that cuisine.
