Easter weekend, 1990. On the Saturday, central London hit by the Poll Tax riots that arguably brought down Thatcher later that year. The next day, a riot in Strangeways prison in Manchester leading to a seige for several weeks.

Any thoughts? Memories?

Yeah. Blimey, was it 20 years ago? Really?

I was there.

I won't tell that tale, instead:

Some years later, there was one of those "I remember" adverts asking for people's reminiscences about the day, so I called. After a few probing questions, I got the feeling they were not greatly interested in my perspective, fair enough. But they were *very* interested in getting names of people that might have had more to do with things, and got somewhat agitated by my refusal to add any more detail to the people I had referred to as "friend", "friend's girlfriend" and "other bloke"..

Suffice to say, I did not ever see any such TV show, and wondered if there was some other motive, actually, to the advert.

Also, the very first time I saw Paul "Bro of Jonathan" Ross on the TV, he was presenting some sort of Police 5 type show. Part one the usual "Who's this holding a post office up with a gun" stuff. Part two was picking people out ofthe Trafalgar Square footage and asking "Do you know this person? Call now..."

So, I took an immediate and irrevocable dislike to him. Think I was right to.

That's all very well, Mark, but I feel your stories would be so much more powerful with the addition of names and addresses.

I remember the strangeways riots more, probably because i went and watched them on the roof throwing tiles and stuff during my lunch times while at college. I remember it being on the news one evening and my sister pointing out one of the rooftop lot was in her class at school. Doesn't seem 20 years ago though, what have a done with my life :(
