I thought I started one a while back but can't find it. Anyway, today I visited SpaCastle in Queens (formerly InSpa World).

Relaxing, if slightly Brave New World-ish. Everyone has to wear ugly shorts-and-tee uniforms around. The locker rooms have awesome jacuzzi baths, the second floor has a bunch of different weird saunas (including a gold-plated one and a color therapy one), and the roof - the best part imo - has outdoor and indoor pools with all different kinds of massaging water jets. You pay for any food or extra services with an electronic watch they give you. Was very pleasant early in the morning when we arrived, but became obnoxiously crowded later on. Seems like a weekday would be the best choice if you can - also much cheaper ($30 instead of $45). You take the 7 to the last stop and then there's a shuttle that picks you up from a nearby parking lot. Could also be combined with a korean food excursion in the area around the subway, it seems.

Contrast with Royal Palace, which I visited last year:http://royalpalaceny.com/main.html
Basically just an ok swimming pool and a few different steam baths/saunas. Nothing I don't already have at the Y. Plus seemed to be primarily a hangout for Russian bigshot wannabes. And I was creeped out by the fact that they literally lock you in until you pay.

whoa i went to spa castle last sunday! luckily we had a car, the subway being what it is it would've taken seemingly forever for us to get there. i loooved the locker room baths (i took a nap in the darkened room off to the side). and the saunas are totally nuts - did you go into the cold one hurting?
