Back in the late 90’s I was working part time temp in a huge grocery warehouse . One of my buddies that worked there made cookies he would sell on the side for a few bucks and they were pretty strong as one would get you really stoned. So one day he was just giving them out to people at work and this one new temp who thought he was pro stoner or some shit decided he needed to eat two despite our advise otherwise . A couple hours go by and I hear some commotion at the other end of the building where dude is flipping the fuck out , he convinces someone not in the know to call 911 because by says he was poisoned and is dying . Cops and ambulance comes he rats out the guy that gave it to him and starts naming names of other people that took it. everyone gets fired

they sell 50 dose brownies here - roughly the size of your palm ... i ate a quarter of one once. then i died.

the late great, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:35 (six years ago) link

The one I had was 100. I stick with a quarter of one and even that is sometimes too much, sometimes barely does anything

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link

thats the thing that i don't like about them, determining the appropriate dose is too difficult. plus they take too much time. "oh eat 1/2 a cookie and wait 2 hours, then if you want more, eat the other half. then in 4 hours you'll feel great!"

marcos, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:41 (six years ago) link

xp 100 dose?!? you mean 100mg, no?

the late great, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:45 (six years ago) link

Yeah, couldn't remember the unit and didn't want to inadvertently claim 100g or something which it looks like I kind of did anyway by omission. So yours was 50 doses? How much is a dose?

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:48 (six years ago) link

10mg = 1 dose ime

Mordy, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:51 (six years ago) link

I'm with you, marcos. I only do them when I have people in from out-of-state and they want to do some, mainly for the novelty factor.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:51 (six years ago) link

the bar i’m talking about is 1000 mg!

the late great, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:56 (six years ago) link

Jesus. I'd probably be wrecked 2 days later if I had a quarter of that

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:58 (six years ago) link

and yeah i’m convinced they sell it for novelty factor because who wants to break a palm-sized brownie into 50 pieces?

the late great, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 21:58 (six years ago) link

i know some medicinal users that need to take huge doses for their ailments though

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:02 (six years ago) link

it wasn’t all that bad actually because i was at home and about an hour in when I realized how bad i had fucked up I decided to get in bed and sleep it off ... and I immediately passed out

woke up about 16 hrs later feeling quite groggy (not high) and that groggy feeling took a day or two to pass

i put the rest of the brownie down the garbage disposal instead of the trash because i was afraid a raccoon would get at it and flip the fuck out

the late great, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:04 (six years ago) link

xp yeah i guess so. i’ve been smoking daily for close to 10 years now and it was way over my tolerance but i guess it might be different if i was eating edibles daily

the late great, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:07 (six years ago) link

a single brownie broken into 50 pieces?! that is absurd.
how is labeling of edibles standardized? is there something like a nutrition label or a metric like proof/alcohol to determine strength? do people follow the directions usually?

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:27 (six years ago) link

They usually have a label with the THC amount. This is based on Californian ones, could be different elsewhere

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:32 (six years ago) link

until it's legal nationally, is it likely that standards & labeling will vary from state to state?

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:32 (six years ago) link

how much did that 50 doser cost?

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:33 (six years ago) link

xp aiui yes, as well as testing standards unfortunately

sleeve, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:38 (six years ago) link

the thing about quantity of thc in edibles is that the cannabis oil it is made with is not distributed equally, so you may get a nibble and have close to no thc while another part of it may have way more

i think we've had this conversation in another thread before

infinity (∞), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:47 (six years ago) link

i'm just wondering because a movement to standardize units and labeling would be interesting
and seems pretty necessary from what i've read here

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:50 (six years ago) link

not as a measure to limit consumption, but to measure consumption

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:50 (six years ago) link

anyone rate the iced tea drinks?

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:53 (six years ago) link

Commercial edibles usually use distillate now, which is 99% pure activated THC (and flavorless, so your brownies don't taste vaguely of dank lawn clippings) rather than traditional oil preps.

A friend brought back very low dose edibles - mints and chocolate covered blueberries in 2mg-5mg doses. Seemed pretty accurate in terms of how much it took to feel anything.

louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:55 (six years ago) link

many xposts the 1000mg bar was $40

the late great, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:58 (six years ago) link

I made a tincture with distillate in Everclear but I hated it and gave away the bottles. A pregnant friend was saving hers for the future but her wine-mom/teacher reading group discovered the bottle in the freezer and drained it within a few sessions. Apparently 5 drops in a glass of wine was juuuuuust right.

louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:58 (six years ago) link

for me vaping is just not enough of a rush, edibles affect my body too much and also act too slowly, but smoking is just right.

for small and low dose edibles this sounds right ime

also w/r/t to tincture it really depends on so many factors

my grandfather can't have more than 2 drops in a glass

infinity (∞), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 23:32 (six years ago) link

if you want a stronger hit you probably want to put the temperature of the vapourizer above something like 400f, if your alternative is smoking it, it wouldn't matter that it's that high anyway

A few weeks ago I mentioned the looming fear I've been feeling regarding Canada's legalization project. To be precise, I've had the hunch that we may end up in a society that's actually less free and more punitive than ever before. Case in point, the Quebec Landlords Association:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-landlords-clauses-marijuana-leases-2018-1.4476344

That's right, a whole new set of prohibitions, fines, injunctions, not to mention stronger enforcement of other laws as some sort of strange tit-for-tat on the part of the police.

In Montreal, you are 10 to 20 feet from someone who's smoking a joint at practically all times of day or night. In the dead of winter, at a bus stop across from a police station, emanating from the window of a seniors' retirement home, you name it. EVERYONE smokes cannabis in Quebec, EVERYONE.

It appals me that legalization threatens a status quo that's extremely tolerant. Or, perhaps, this is simply the opportunity that anti-drug conservative types have been waiting for. Legalize it, make buying it legally a typically Canadian over-regulated nightmare, then kick away the ladders on all the real freedom.

this is interesting. can landlords ban cigarette smoking in apartments? they can in the US, iirc. if so, how would banning marijuana smoking be any different?

k3vin k., Monday, 8 January 2018 18:31 (six years ago) link

i saw an infomercial on the morning of jan 1st in california where you could just pick up the phone and get some cbd (infused?) pills (i think they were pills) being marketed as some type of cure-all miracle drug

infinity (∞), Monday, 8 January 2018 18:38 (six years ago) link

Oh man, my newage hippie sister-in-law is trying to set up a business selling CBD oil here in Maryland. She was openly doing this on FB the other day and telling people that it was legal because it didn't contain THC or something? It looks like the post has been taken down, so it must not have been without controversy.

how's life, Monday, 8 January 2018 20:37 (six years ago) link

Yeah there's a massive YouTube rabbit hole of vloggers pushing affiliate marketing. Seems pyramidy

fields of salmon, Monday, 8 January 2018 20:53 (six years ago) link

CBD oil is legal in a lot of states, as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC iirc

some is "full spectrum," and contains everything from the hemp, some is "pure" and only contains CBD

gbx, Monday, 8 January 2018 20:57 (six years ago) link

the 0.3% cutoff is what distinguishes "hemp" from "marijuana," even tho they're the same plant (a fact I only recently learned)

gbx, Monday, 8 January 2018 20:59 (six years ago) link

I would think that the production of CBD oil would require licensing, testing and inspection at the state level.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 8 January 2018 21:02 (six years ago) link

xp

p sure hemp is from the male plant though

while it's the female plant that marijuana comes from

infinity (∞), Monday, 8 January 2018 21:03 (six years ago) link

same species, though, innit -- i spent years thinking that hemp was ~related~ but not actually the same plant as marijuana
