blimey i have not been round wanstead way for ages! me, G & R used to drink in the George opposite the station, it was quite a nice boozer despite being a wetherspoon's but it's probably rubbish now. there was also a little "irish" (you know what i mean) pub down the road that we used to call the Flafferty's that we always drank in as well. apart from that it's got the usual Safeway's, Blockbuster Video, "upmarket" shoes shops and KFC that you'll find in pretty much any essex burb, it's a totally unremarkable place. why do you want to go there Chris?

(although, i know that the Earl of Essex's seat used to be there (or was that when he was still the Earl of Leicester before Queen Elizabeth I promoted him? anyhoo - dunno if Wanstead House still exists. that could be fun i suppose if you like tudor history!)

I heard it was nbice and it's such lovely weather that sitting in the house would be a crime today. hmmm, maybe I'll go up to Chingford and walk in the Forest.

ha! i did think, who's started that thread? the other side of the lea is a bit of a mystery to me, so i don't know it well. its fairly close to leyton isn't it? do you remember all that m11 stuff of 1995, when people occupied houses and it turned into an urban twyford/newbury thing?

also, it did occur to me that i have never been on the gospel oak- barking line, wanstead must be reasonably close to that?

this will tell you all about the earl of essex. and the reporter is called DAVID GROCOTT!! but i still do not know whether you can visit his HOUSE (the earl of essex's, not david grocott's. obv)

mmm, that was when I first started visiting London and there was all that Wanstonia stuff, because the crusties were annoyed that the M11 went through the finest patch of psilocybin mushrooms in Britain.

Is that the same Wanstead that's near Forest Gate? Wanstead Flats Wanstead? Or am I wrong?

what did you get up to in the end then Chris?

(YAY the boards are back!!:):):))

katie, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I ended up walking up Lea Bridge road, up to Whipp's cross, through the bottom of the Forest and then along Wood street then back into the Stow. It was most pleasant.

I love it, what with the massive massive massive massive open space. After Ireland lost to Spain we went out there and sat around drinking for a while and then played football. It was a great day, considering.
