I dunno, you probably all knwo about this already, but iffen you don't

http://www.kartoo.com/

is ace. It uses loads of search engines and draws semantic maps that you can click on.

Above all, it's very pretty.

misterjones, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Pretty, yes. Confusing, yes. It must be the future.

Ally C, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Very pretty! I could spend ages getting lost. I like it!

jel --, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oooh it's LOVELY!

I am a search engine groupie, and this is the most interesting new one I have looked at in a long time. The semantic maps are just so cool.

Nicole, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's top innit. I love the way you can float over a term and all the sites affected by that term will get a halo. And vice versa.

misterjones, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am in love already.

RickyT, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Blimey. Slower than Google but STILL it is the future. Mmmm. Oh. Mmmm.

Sarah, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It looks so good, how could it be wrong?

davel, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

corr!

Alan T, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

and that's usually my last reaction to anything using Flash.

Ned and Dastoor - mentioned this search engine months ago on ILE.

DJ Martian, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think it came out last year, but reading their press releases they've just revamped it on the 16th July which would explain why I've found a link to it this week.

-"Kartoo now suggests expressions related to the term of your query. Concerning the visual side of Kartoo, the search box moves to the centre of the home page in response to requests from our users."

S'good.

misterjones, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i looked at this when it was on that old thread. it seemed to be quite unusable. was i wrong? way too confusing

Ron, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned and Dastoor - mentioned this search engine months ago on ILE.

QUITE RIGHT. Once again N. and I are ignored. *cries* (Actually, Nicole, however did you miss N. mentioning it? I thought you run a program specifically to track all his posts. ;-) )

It is a fun engine, to be sure. Came up in a training class here the other day and everyone was very bemused.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's breathtakingly lovely, and my search for inro brought up excellent sites and excellent further options in pretty good time. Wonderful.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

when you type in "B*n*bus" ILX doesn't come up so thats a plus. But the words "Ready, Cried, Care, Push" do.

Chris, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

one month passes...
My semantic map now consists of:
"marathon sunday"
"love everything new answers"
list
journalism
guardian
fantastic
interviews
classic
alone
chip

I am saddened by 'alone', heartened by 'classic' and 'fantastic' and bemused by 'marathon sunday'

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 September 2002 10:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, a Neville Dastoor ran the Toronto marathon. So what?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 September 2002 11:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

ok, i'm dumb... what's a semantic map?

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 6 September 2002 11:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

You get a semantic map when a program (or person, I suppose) peforms an analysis on data associated with something (or a phrase like 'Nick Dastoor') and groups words or concepts associated with it.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 September 2002 11:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

hmmmm..... well, whatever. it looks nice.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

did you pull this up because felicity and rosemary were talking about kartoo, or is there some crazy synchronicity type stuff going on

ron (ron), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

HONOUR THE FIRE

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

i will try, but i'm not sure how

I like this new one! It groups all of your results into categories, which makes it easier to find what you are looking for in some cases.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 2 February 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

*does some random tests* The categorizing is useful, the rankings within them a bit scattershot, though the reference to other web guide rankings does help.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 February 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ho ho! If you vivismo my name one of the categories is 'Hero'

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 2 February 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nicole, clearly this search engine is trash.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 February 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, Ned it's one of the better metasearch engines !

my top 4 metasearch engines

1. Fazzle http://www.fazzle.com/

2. ez2www http://ez2www.com/

3. Vivisimo http://vivisimo.com/

4. Turbo 10 http://turbo10.com/

Hotbot http://hotbot.com/

*bows* DJM, I was making a funny.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 February 2003 01:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

DJM laughs in the face of funnies.

If we're getting all serious then wow I competely forgot about Hotbot. That was my search engine of choice for a while after Altavista and before Google. Had no idea it was still going. Alltheweb.com is also worth a try if you get fuck all looking for something obscure on Google.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 3 February 2003 02:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alltheweb is good...feels strange to agree with N. Teoma is good for some searches too.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 3 February 2003 03:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

I could talk about search engines all day, that's the sad part. I passed the point of geekery long ago.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 3 February 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Let's make geeky kids together!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 3 February 2003 03:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

You have confused Nicoles. But you have at long last traded up obsessions from that other one you kept going on about.

Watch out for Dipsie - it's going to smash Google! launching in Summer 2004

http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/roush0304.asp?p=3
He claims that by the time Dipsie’s search site becomes publicly available this summer, its index will include 10 billion documents—triple the current size of Google’s index.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago) link

There's been so much hype about Dipsie, considering there isn't even a beta version to look at. Are you a viral marketeer? I guess a bigger index is sometimes useful, but it's hardly the most important thing in a search engine.

Yahoo Search: New Search Engine Launched

Just a quick web searching tip: Yahoo Search results are no longer powered by Google - they are now using their own systems.

Last year Yahoo purchased a technology company called Inktomi who are a leading Web search provider [a Search Engine database/ crawler], using their expertise they have now developed Yahoo Search. Yahoo are using a web indexing robot: Yahoo! Slurp to crawl and index websites.

One of the advantages of Yahoo Search over Google - they cache the first 500K of a webpage, compared to Google that limits to 100K.

Also note that like Google: Yahoo Search has a News section - for uptodate breaking news.

>> Yahoo Search - News

This just in: Yahoo! News Search is now even better: Info >> News Search

Background info on >> Yahoo Search
