We just had a very small earthquake

I didn't even notice it. hah!

nathalie, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh uh... questions (and new answer) how about you? Ever experienced an earthquake?

nathalie, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes several times. The best advice is to just relax and enjoy the ride. Unless your building collapses, in which case panic is justified.

Sean, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We had a tornado in the park a few months ago. Not had an earthquake, thankfully.

jel --, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I noticed it! I was still in bed, thinking about getting up but still half asleep. Then all the windows and interior walls shook for a second, then a few moments later for about 3 or 4 seconds. What the fuck was that, I thought?

Jeff W, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Earthquakes are fun!

Alex in SF, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Northridge 1994 wasn't THAT fun, then again I was thankfully well away from the Valley and all.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

we had an earthquake in Ireland once. My mother thought it was the washing machine going into overdrive. most people slept through it.

DV, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Northridge was *NOT* fun at all (especially since I was in the Valley at the time). The most important and useful bit of earthquake preparedness: if you do live in an earthquake prone area, make sure you always know where your shoes are - since broken glass and debris really suck.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've lived my whole life in the bay area, earthquakes are no big deal here. I agree with Alex.

Kris, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My parents' repair bills, and the three homes on my parents street that were demolished, and oh yeah, all the dead people = serious earthquakes are not fun. I will admit that I enjoy the small ones, but if you're in SF or LA, just make sure you always have some slippers/shoes very near to your bed, since cuts all over your feet suck.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...

Yes, I noticed it. I told everyone in the house that we just had an Earthquake and they all thought I was mad. Then I thought I was mad, and that the shaking was a seizure of some kind. How silly. This morning I found out it was a quake. I am now the (bestest) in the house now. YAY!

Three earthquakes in 18 months for me, which is strange for an englishman to experience. Last nights, one in L.A around January, and the Seattle shaker in 2001.

kinski (kinski), Monday, 23 September 2002 08:35 (twenty-three years ago)

You have the knack, Kinski. To be on the safe side, never move to where I live. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 September 2002 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i always seem to be on the toilet when they happen. better than a bridge, i suppose.

mbosa, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

they are like angel sighs compared to hurricanes. hurricanes are terrifying

WOW. that was a good one.

I felt a definite shockwave pass through here, but no rolling/shaking. Just one *whump* like a plane passing overhead at high speed

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't feel anything up here!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't feel a thing and I'm right on campus near Chris -- some of my coworkers did, some didn't.

Didn't feel a thing and I'm right on campus near Chris -- some of my coworkers did, some didn't.

FWIW, I'm also on the second floor.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Missed it near LAX (but I'm in a building with isolators)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Officially I'm on a second floor too, but the library is its own strange building.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm smack dab in the middle of the SFV right now and I didn't feel anything, but then again this amazing Italian sandwich has my full attention.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Not the Jack in the Box sandwich?!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i am at home. i have antique wireframe bookshelves which were zigging and zagging madly back and forth.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

huh, there was one in southeast missouri before sunrise today.

gawd that looks VILE

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread makes me think of Tori Amos and her revolting orgasms.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it looked kinda good. (pretty standardish, no?)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently there was a 5.0 quake in Baja 90 seconds later. We all gonna die.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

What about her pulchritudinous orgasms?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Overrated.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

we're okay Ned, i.e. "we" meaning "me" because the OC's gonna cave in and become the world's largest sinkhole. Drive north and fast, son.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Quote from a local TV news story:

"Another 5.1 magnitude quake reportedly occured 52 miles west, southwest of Rosarito Beach in Baja, Calif."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i want that sandwich. i'd hit tori amos (i don't mean that way).

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem has never been to a jack in the box.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

What way do (don't?) you mean it?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

im bitter i missed out on the erfquake. im in century city in a rather volatile high rise, too. the f'n floor shakes when the fat guy walks by, but not for earthquakes, i suppose...

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what way you do mean.

xpost

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

He does not mean "I would stick my penis into Tori Amos's vagina."

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack in the Box is pretty vile overall.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i felt that 5.0 one in baja, and not the first one.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem in the box

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would you bother mentioning the pickle was kosher on a roll that clearly is very unkosher? Heh.

Ive felt a few quakes in my time - Canberra is on a small fautline, so we had one or two v minor wobbles in my childhood. There was a huge one in newcastle in the late 80s as well, flattened a lot of the city.

(wow major xpost there wtf)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

He hit me and it felt like a good porking?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

If I never go through another earthquake, I'll feel fortunate. Let the people after me go through the Big One.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a little uncomfortable with the discussion of THAT sandwich being interlinked with a discussion of Tori Amos' vagina.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem in the box

But not stevem in Tori's box, apparently.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i am a bit less than a half mile from the county fair, which i can see from my backyard-facing window. unfortunately the quake does not seem to have toppled the ferris wheel.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If I never go through another earthquake, I'll feel fortunate. Let the people after me go through the Big One.

Some kind of... gang bang?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing we must have felt the Baja one in San Diego. It definitely got my attention. It doesn't help that I'm in the same building I was in during the Northridge quake, and it doesn't exactly have a sturdy feel to it.

chëshy f cät, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagine how I feel, Gear. I'm uncomfortable with the concept of Tori Amos.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem is trying to tell us that really he wants to hit the sandwich, but Tori Amos will do.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would you bother mentioning the pickle was kosher on a roll that clearly is very unkosher? Heh.

"Kosher" refers to a style of pickling.
http://www.californiawineandfood.com/food/kosher-pickles.htm

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

well i think the sandwich AND Tori in her 'God' video look would be nice right now. but then i guess so would a lot of things.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously though, in what ultraviolent, hypersexualised nightmare environment is 'hit' slang for having sex with someone?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

N, this is hip-hop. Hip-hop, this is N. Play nice.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer the term "smoke dat ass" myself.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so naive. I thought it was all just about hitting people.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(If you want a full etymology, I think "hit it" grew out of the booty call syndrome; to "hit" someone really means to call them (mainstream example: "Hit Me Baby One More Time") and since a booty call is calling someone up at night for sex, I think the one slang term blended into the other.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i likes ta spank

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

and to shake your booty means to wiggle one's butt. permit dan to demonstrate.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

... See?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread has come full circle.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was all about Wellingtons...

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer the term "smoke dat ass" myself.

That one's pretty good. I am a bigger fan of "tap dat ass."

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that a salami-pipe?

I didn't feel either quake.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find any reference to property damage on the 'Net; how badly was the 5.0 area hit?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

to "hit" someone really means to call them (mainstream example: "Hit Me Baby One More Time")

WTF! I seriously thought she was singing about wanting to be actually hit. I always thought it was an odd song topic.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the 5.0 area was in the ocean. i doubt there's any damage anywhere.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I did actually know about the booty call thing. I just didn't realise it had mutated into just meaning fucking.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

damage was extensive in some areas

I have a friend who moved into the CSUN on-campus faculty housing late in the night before the Northridge quake. The quake happened on a govt. holiday (MLK, Jr.) at about 5 in the morning. All he had done was pile his boxes around his boxspring/mattress on the floor with no frame. He said he woke up thrown to the floor and the boxes were flying in both directions all across the room above, and then on top of him.

I'm waiting for the next SF Quake so I can buy a place when all the lilly livered flatlanders get the hell out of dodge.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely felt the Baja one here in South OC. Shook for a good 10 seconds, it felt like.

But alas, another teaser. I've been anticipating the "big one" my whole life.

Any other East Bay people awake? I swear that was right underneath our house.

Also we just called the cops on a drunk guy trying to break in to the place next door. I probably wouldn't have heard him if the tremor didn't wake me up. It's 5AM!
