one month passes...
But I don't think those threads are exhaustive. Surely someone can answer Gareth's thread directly--not me, though, I am busy trying to singlehandedly keep the Houellebecq thread alive.

OK: he is grate, or at least GOOD, re memory, history, war, time, dreams, landscape, the rural, England, Germany, language, the real, the fictional, language ('style'). Plus he is occasionally a black comedian.

i've read the emigrants. i think he relies too much upon external supports. the first three sections are good, the first best, but only accidentally, as though, a keen observer, he was able to communicate the essential mystery of a person or a situation--to preserve the mystery in the explication--but when it came to telling about himself, the story was too transparent. i thought the last section was truly dull, and even the photos got boring. there wasn't that haunted feeling that i got earlier, especially when reading the part about dr. selwyn. (the photo of him at the window!)

I thought the emigrants was boring and I haven't read anything else. I don't know why I always let Susan Sontag lure me into reading boring authors.
