Save Our Ruddy Ducks!

So, a cull of all the UK's 4000 Ruddy Ducks is being debated. Their crime: breeding with endangered Spanish ducks. This has got my blood boiling, whilst I feel sorry that the Spanish ducks are at risk, killing 4000 ducks is not the answer.

Is this conservation gone mad?

noooo!!! i warned against the consequences of everyone having the duck last night!! it has all come horribly true!!

mark s, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I may not be a vegetarian, but I will never eat ducks.

jel --, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why not? They are delicious.

Emma, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

IRON LAW OF FOOD W.FACES = the cuter the yummier, surely?

off to work now, and on the way a quick pret kitten-and-mango baguette

mark s, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mangoes have vvfugly faces.

Tim, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, but this is a serious issue. The poor Ruddy Ducks will not be eaten.

jel --, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i love ducks is this true - 4000 thats horrible - i wonder who would do it - what a bastard - some people will do anything for cash - i couldnt not even at a price per duck rate

born clippy, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ruddy ducks are nasty uncute things BUT this kind of intervention to sustain the purity of another duck species strikes me as wrong. If Spanish ducks think Ruddy drakes are better mates than Spanish drakes then tough luck the Spanish ones - that's nature for you!

Tom, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But maybe the Ruddy Drakes are forcing themselves onto the Spanish ducks against their will!

Emma, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

emma thats foul hahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahah

born clippy, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That said if it was the great British MALLARD under threbt I would be right behind the cullers.

Tom, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom have you been reading propaganda from the UK Duck Independence Party again?

Emma, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

threbt?? DANGER meme-mutation at work

Alan T, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

GRRR well for the record jel i agree with you!

katie, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Drake defeated the Armada, and now the Spanish drakes are getting their own back. It's a funny old world.

tricyclic_looper, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know any more about the ducks? I mean is either species indigenous? Presumably Spanish ducks are Spanish but what about the other lot? More duck facts please.

Emma, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think theyre a non-indigenous species which came to the UK cos we meddled too much with nature. I think they're Canadian or something. These are not 'facts' merely hear'say.

Tom, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I said duck facts not duck factoids.

Emma, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The ruddy duck is a North American 'stifftail' which was originally imported to the UK in the late 1940s by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge (founded by Sir Peter Scott). Following an accidental release in 1952, the ducks established themselves successfully in the wild, and the British population now numbers almost 4,000."

Tom, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we eat them?

RickyT, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

emma

born clippy, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RUDDY DUCK GYOZA!

RickyT, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Revenge of the Ruddy Duck.

jel --, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It sounds to me like Ruddy ducks are ripe for culling (though of course bad humans slap wrists shouldn't have introduced them in the first place).

Emma, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Reading pornography, smoking cigars...DUCKS! DUCKS! Quack quack, quack quack!"

A joke probably only Kate the Saint will get.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

rosy-cheeked ducks - pah - we've got RAVENOUS WALKING FISH to contend with over here - "The snakehead fish, which can grow up to 3 feet long, eats other fish and can walk across land to find new sources of food in other lakes and streams. The fish can stay out of water for up to three days. The people of northern Thailand and Myanmar (formerly Burma) believe a snakehead fish is a reincarnated sinner."

Tracer Hand, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some dude in Maryland brough a few over from Thailand - they make good eatin apparently - and kept them in a kiddie pool in his garage. they eventually grew so large and exhibited such ugly aggressive behavior that he sickened of them and dumped them in a pond behind a shopping mall. NOW WE HAVE MASSIVE WALKING FISH EVERYWHERE

Tracer Hand, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They're just wanting to get to know you, Tracer.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What people don't realize is, ruddy ducks can kick the asses of walking fish monsters. I pray to the heavens that we don't get walking fish monsters over here!

jel --, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

o no! ruddy ducks vs walking fish monsters FITE! o no!

Hmmm, I'd sure like to see a picture of that...

Ellie, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They tried setting an early curfew (10 pm!) whenever a Spanish duck dated a Ruddy duck, but it didn't work. They just went straightway to a friend's house and 'feathered their nest' in the spare bedroom. Now there's nothing for it but to kill them to save them from themselves. Doesn't it always come to that in the end?

Aimless, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

contraception in the duck world is harsh :(

must work on giant fish vs ruddy pic!

jel --, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So basically we have these foreign ducks coming over here with their filthy foreign ways, refusing to integrate, probably living off state benefits in council houses, and someone comes up with a perfectly balanced policy of gentle but firm killing, and these lefties get in an uproar.

What we need is genetically adjusted ducks that already taste a bit orangey, to save food preparation effort.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
Today, I feel very sad. :(

jel -- (jel), Monday, 3 March 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Is your sadness duck-related?

Lara (Lara), Monday, 3 March 2003 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The cull has been approved, I believe.

Irish policy is similar but we don't call them ducks, we call them *runs away*
