Leavis / Derrida

I just read Derek Attridge saying that maybe he liked JD cos he'd been brought up on Leavis and Richards. Possibly it was a slightly knowingly perverse remark. DA says that Stephen Heath says that Leavis and Derrida have things in common. What things? That got me thinking. 'Particualrity' of textual engagement, probably.

So, meantime - which do you prefer? And do you see similarities, or only a dichotomy?

Wow, this could be my least popular thread EVER. I'm the new Q.

"I have a Derrida book still awaiting to be read." hah! Too busy reading Kristeva (and judging on how much I - uh - like it, it'll tak forEVAH to finish it)

I have been using a 'Derek and Mavis' keyring for the past two weeks. I'm hoping to be allowed to keep it, but I don't want to get my hopes up too much only to see them dashed.

More Derrida excitement: There is a film called 'Derrida' making its debut(?) at the Locarno Film Festival. I don't know whether it's about Derrida or is some kind of Bergerac thing.

It's true, it's about JD. I might have to Report Back on this at some point.

Miller - do you like the geezer Leavis?

I have not read Leavis (or Derrida), tho' I have read a ton of stuff by film critic Robin Wood, an ex-student of Leavis who attempted (as part of his evolving critical 'project') to somehow reconcile Leavisite 'close reading' w/ psychoanalytic Marxism. It was a bit like that dog walking on its hind legs - ungainly and pointless, but still sort of impressive to see...

When I was a film student I also struggled through Stephen Heath's MASSIVE, 'seminal' essay on 'Touch of Evil' (w/ diagrams) and a rather more concise one on 'Jaws' (which, underneath the heavy theoretical barrage, amounted to saying that the shark = Viet Nam). So I'm not sure I exactly 'trust' Heath - I presume he's making some sort of comparison between 'close reading' and 'deconstruction... hmmm...
