Listening to "Kersh" on The Empire Strikes Back it's clear this old hippie had a better grasp of Lucas' material than Lucas did.

It's on TESB's commentary track.

It seems like Empire Strikes Back is every fans' favorite Star Wars movie. I'd have to agree, I love the scenes that take place in Vader's med chamber.

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Monday, 29 November 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

Loved Loving and Eyes of Laura Mars.

Has anyone seen his Frank Miller-scripted Robocop 2? Sounds crazy!

da croupier, Monday, 29 November 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

oh MAN. Eyes of Laura Mars is batshit insane.

One of the first R-rated movies I can remember seeing in the theater...it's entertaining but not nearly as good as the first.

OTM. Empire is easily the best AND best-looking Star Wars movie by far.

I saw it as a kid but all I can remember is the legendary "Thank you for not smoking!" scene. IIRC correctly it was more humourous than the first one.

The AV Club has a nice obit for him, making the point to mention that he would deliberately go against Lucas' choices.

Does anyone know why Lucas picked Kershner? Did he expect Kershner to be some grateful tool?

I think there's something about this in Easy Riders, Raging Bulls iirc

Highlight of Loving: a very young Sherry Lansing, who went on to run Paramount. She's absolutely gorgeous.

I've seen it both ways.

You know, it's easy now to look back and assume that everything Lucas has done over the course of his life had some venal, selfish, misguided motive, but 1978 George Lucas was not 1999 George Lucas. He wanted a director he trusted, since he had leveraged his own interest in Star Wars to the hilt to pay for the making of Empire, and Kershner was that director. To the extent that the film went over time and over budget, it was almost never Kershner's fault, too. Weather, fires, labor strikes, scheduling problems, etc. all conspired against them.

It is, but not exactly in a good way. Has its moments. I think Alan Moore was offered that job first.

It wouldn't surprise me if Gary Kurtz had a hand in it, a lot of what was good about the first two movies gets attributed to him in this post-Phantom Menace world.

RE: "I love you" "I know"

Kershner: "It was originally written out as 'I love you too'. I hated the line 'I love you too', because it gives her the advantage. Whenever somebody says 'I love you', you're at a disadvantage, the other person said it first!"

Well, I gotta say I didn't expect an ILX connection when I noticed the piece Lucasfilm ran today on the starwars.com site to note his passing:

apparently Ford came up with "I know."

my one Hollywood-biz friend gave 'Kersh' his old secretary.
