also the episode has a bunch of random people on it like merlin mann, scott simpson, his wife, blah blah

I actually tried to listen to to it yesterday. I got to the 'comedian' and had to shut it off. Surprised I made it that far.

three weeks pass...

http://daringfireball.net/linked/2013/07/09/maximum-viable-products

he sure does admire expensive stuff for being expensive

caek, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 21:06 (ten years ago) link

i feel like there's this submeme of 'don't price your products too cheaply' going around among entrepreneuer types

乒乓, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 23:52 (ten years ago) link

i absolutely get that line of thinking, at least from the point of view developer.

but gruber is not a dev. he's a consumer/critic and he seems to be actively critical of inexpensive stuff simply because it's inexpensive.

i suppose that's fine when you are a cryptoconservative pulling in six figures.

caek, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 23:57 (ten years ago) link

dude he wants to pimp the meme of "it's okay to set your prices high" because he IS in the fucking development game. He doesn't want to lose money. And BTW his fucking app is overpriced and wouldn't make a dent in the world if it wasn't him pimping it. It's a classic solution looking for a problem, window dressing looking for a fucking window.

I don't find him conservative at all, at least judging from his overtly political posts.

"maximal apps" are nothing more than vanity projects or, as the fucking moron David Morin says, "bespoke" apps where devs jerk off into code, self-promote it as "disruptive", and then bask in the glory of the five other devs who want to pay $5.99 for five seconds of geek validation.

I would love to see a list of Gruber's paid consulting gigs related to typography.

oh wait, this single article is basically a press release by the government that oppressed her? my bad.

Washington doesn’t want to see Apple fail; they want Apple to continue making massive profits. They just want a bigger slice of those juicy profits kicked back.

seriously the casual polo shirt or hoodie seems much more a valley affectation than just wearing a reasonable shirt eventually

if you live in SF having a zip-up sweater-type thing is really handy. usually those end up being hoodies. i kinda hate hoodies but i have two.

eris bueller (lukas), Friday, 6 September 2013 05:28 (ten years ago) link

lol be serious people that rich can afford knitwear like they do everywhere else the weather is sometimes in the 60s. it has nothing to do with the climate.

caek, Friday, 6 September 2013 05:30 (ten years ago) link

you can tell ive's hoody is euro-nice and not googlebus wear

caek, Friday, 6 September 2013 05:31 (ten years ago) link

good call

oh man, I met up with a friend when I was in SF and since I'd just been wandering around all day I was wearing a hoodie and felt way overdressed since she'd just got off work. In retrospect, it was near the financial district so people probably weren't thinking "ugh, slob" they were probably thinking "ugh, those damn tech people"

space is deep (mh), Friday, 6 September 2013 13:36 (ten years ago) link

felt way _underdressed_ that is

space is deep (mh), Friday, 6 September 2013 13:36 (ten years ago) link

are you guys seriously mad that rich people arent dressing snootily enough

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 6 September 2013 22:29 (ten years ago) link

pat smear and taylor hawkins are dressed like they're ready to do server backups

Philip Nunez, Friday, 6 September 2013 23:57 (ten years ago) link

More that the SF clothing aesthetic is to look frumpy even if you're hailed as a paragon of industrial design.

space is deep (mh), Saturday, 7 September 2013 00:08 (ten years ago) link

i am furious at these rich people for letting the side down
