It seems audiences were more interested in seeing visitors from outer space wanting to be our friends instead of destroying us.

Well it is a bit of a surprise considering that up to that point pretty much all the big science fiction films had used the previous plot (Day The Earth Stood Still a possible exception - though he does almost destroy the earth because they argued too much).
