GAH ME TOO!!! I might (would) have peed my pants.
Also FYI Tommy Wiseau is going to be at the Music Box on 3/23 and 3/24. (will probably not go)

I thought I spotted a Jeff on in the loop yesterday?
― tanuki, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:10 (twelve years ago) link
Argh, Tommy Wiseau. I am in awe of The Room, but I wish it didn't come with Wiseau attached.
tanuki, did we watch The Room together?

any of you guys use Sprint? My service has been atrocious over the past month or so.
― stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:40 (twelve years ago) link
No, fuck Sprint IMO. Sorry.
― free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:41 (twelve years ago) link
No, we use stupid AT&T.
I need some new podcasts to listen to, preferably ones that tell stories. I like TAL, natch, and Radiolab and I listen to an old time radio spooky story podcast, but is there anything else out there that's narrative focused? I used to listen to a couple of episodic story podcasts, the names of which are escaping me. One was kind of bad and then got so horrible I couldn't even cope with it anymore, and the others just... stopped updating mid-story.
(I'm good on informational podcasts, and I hate podcasts that are people just riffing for 30 minutes, or people interviewing famous people (unless it happens to be a really, really good interview of someone I really, really like).)

FUCKL
Don't apologize, I completely agree. I just wondered if its just in certain areas or what. Just counting down until our contract expires at this point.
― stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:49 (twelve years ago) link
Possible. I'm in the loop a lot.
― Jeff, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago) link
Jenny, I can't help you, but I wonder how you find time to consume as much media as you do. That's not any kind of criticism, I just don't understand how you find the time.
― free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:57 (twelve years ago) link
I am in love with the Frontline podcast because it's the same as their tv docs, only without images. The one about death investigations ("Post-Mortem") is super O_O and the one about the Fukushima nuclear disaster gave me crazy dreams. Maybe that's a bit overwhelming, idk.
― Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:57 (twelve years ago) link
Train rides, bro.
― Jeff, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:58 (twelve years ago) link
Xsomething
All the Frontline podcasts are great, but those are the two most recent ones I listened to. Oh, also their series on God and America is AMAZING.

Oh, Frontline. That's a good idea. I showed Post-Mortem to my students! It was a big hit.
Jesse, this is for the train.
― carl agatha, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:02 (twelve years ago) link
I honestly have no idea what you are talking about....
― free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:05 (twelve years ago) link
OH! Hahaha.
idgi
You asked me how I have the time to consume so much media. I honestly don't know what you're talking about, but I'm telling you that I listen to podcasts on the train. Also while I get ready for work and sometimes while completing household chores.
― carl agatha, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:06 (twelve years ago) link
god, that would be WAY too overstimulating for me
― Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link
i can't concentrate on heavy shit like nuclear disasters and death while i'm trying to do something else/dealing with people + train noise
It's like listening to the radio, except with people talking.
Oh, do you mean the Frontline podcast specifically? I probably wouldn't listen to all of them.
― carl agatha, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:08 (twelve years ago) link
songs about nuclear disasters and death are ok, but actual facts? no way!yeah, frontline especially but even TAL is a bit much because i have trouble keeping track of who's talking, relationships between people, etc.
― Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:10 (twelve years ago) link
Yeh, sorry, I do understand, carl. I was having problems, but now I'm on board.
― free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:11 (twelve years ago) link
I dislike riding the train if I have nothing to listen to. Part if my hate of overhearing people talking.
― Jeff, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:15 (twelve years ago) link
i listen to podcasts on the train or when i go on walks at lunch. but i pretty much only listen to podcasts that are people just riffing for 30 minutes so i can't help.

carl, what is the old time radio spooky story podcast you listen to? Sounds like something I might dig.
― roy g. devoe (askance johnson), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:18 (twelve years ago) link
wait don't you guys listen to music?! i listen to music on the train, while cleaning, while shopping, walking, getting ready for work, etc.
radiolab ep about SPACE is my FAVORITE
― Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:18 (twelve years ago) link
i have listened to it like 5x
I listen to music maybe 50% of the time.
― Jeff, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:19 (twelve years ago) link
usually morning commute is music + reading, afternoon commute is podcasts (because my eyes are tired from looking at computer all day so i don't feel like reading)
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago) link
I find that listening to podcasts/audiobooks usually makes the time go by faster than listening to music, which is important to me
― roy g. devoe (askance johnson), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:26 (twelve years ago) link
I like hearing people talk on the train usually, and I feel weird not being able to hear ambient noise. Plus I don't like having music on unless it's something I want to actually *listen* to.
My dad never let us play the radio in the car b/c you couldn't hear the car. I don't think I "inherited" that trait from him, but I'm somewhat similar to him in that way.
― free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:29 (twelve years ago) link
I also am always playing a game or reading twitter on the train.
― Jeff, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:29 (twelve years ago) link
My problem with listening to podcasts on public transportation is that it makes me feel guilty for not reading. Not that I don't do it at least once a week, especially if there's a new episode I'm excited about. But then I just sit there playing a game on my iPod or something. Of course, if I find myself on a train or bus that's so crowded I can't sit down, then I don't feel guilty at all.
Mostly, though, I prefer to listen to podcasts when I'm at the gym or while doing household chores.

ok i downloaded the radiolab space episode to listen to sometime. it sounds kind of TAL-style emo based on the description, is it? i don't like TAL-style emo.
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago) link
starts off that way with carl sagan luv story, gets scientific in the middle, then talks about seeds and space artif i like it, it can't be that emo, please
― Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link
My favorite Radiolab episode of the last few months was Patient Zero, which is about Typhoid Mary, the origins of HIV, and the inventor of the high five.
― Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link
yes!
― tanuki, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago) link
The editing on Radio Lab makes it unlistenable for me.
― Jeff, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:55 (twelve years ago) link
It can be very very annoying. The space episode is one of the only ones I really like.
― Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:57 (twelve years ago) link
Askance, the spooky old time radio podcast is called THE HORROR. It's a production of Relic Radio and it's basically just a dude who is clearly a spooky old time radio podcast geek providing a 30 second intro to an episode, and then the episode (often with hilarious commercials! From back in the day when people were too skinny and suffered for lack of iron due to war rationing!). The transfer quality is pretty consistent, though obviously the quality of the stories themselves vary.

I also love the intros to the different programs, Arch Obler telling everybody, "We urge you calmly, but very sincerely, if you frighten easily, turn off your radio now." And "Phantoms of a world gone by speak again the immortal tale..."
