I mean look. Sure, he's probably thinking about hobbits or some shit, but still.

carl agatha, Friday, 23 March 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

i wish i could have that much hair flying all over the place
i also love hobbits

Paul Smon (La Lechera), Friday, 23 March 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

ultimately i would rather just BE a 70s man

Paul Smon (La Lechera), Friday, 23 March 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

back then you could fuck a girl with a shark and no one would blink an eye

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 23 March 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

sorry that was gross. i keep meaning to quit ilx and then forgetting.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

The shark story is apocryphal. Also it was a long time ago. Also I chose not to dwell on it, or the fact that Led Zeppelin stole lyrics/riffs from blues musicians.

Just look at his beard. It will all be okay.

carl agatha, Friday, 23 March 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

Don't quit ILX.

carl agatha, Friday, 23 March 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

surely lots of 70s men were hairy AND gentle/caring AND capable of producing super heavy riffage

Paul Smon (La Lechera), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

I had no idea about the BHB deets but had a good brunch at the Chicago/Damen one last month. Omelette with wnter squash.

"Flashy...hip" (Eazy), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

1. I didn't know about BHB either. The new cafe by my office sells their baked goods and I've noticed that the product and the quality is wildly inconsistent. Ie, a variety of muffin looks and tastes different every day and sometimes they're fresh and sometimes they're stunningly dry and stale. I figured that was the cafe's fault for holding onto product too long, but maybe not. I'm going to look into the allegations against BHB and decide if I want to say anything to the cafe's manager (who last week gave me a free BHB cake ball b/c he knows me).

2. My display name got unfinested!!

3. That crotch is gross. Sorry, carl, but thanks for thinking of me.

Also re BHB: idealists fuck up business/wind up being oppressors?! shockah. :-/

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

BHB may be gross and awful but a tumblr of anonymous complaints with no supporting evidence is also kind of gross and awful.

also this first post is pretty embarrassing: http://thejoeg.tumblr.com/post/19467303185/this-city-needs-me

technicolor yawn (n/a), Friday, 23 March 2012 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

the fundraising stuff seems the most damning, it is weird that a business would be holding a fundraiser

technicolor yawn (n/a), Friday, 23 March 2012 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

I can kind of see (although not support) the motivation. They believe they are doing a good thing with their business, that it's not just about profits but really about a mission/message, and that it is so important that they continue with this mission/message, that they must have a fundraiser so their business can continue to exist. Like, they confused themselves for a nonprofit for a minute.

What the hell, I have never heard about this Led Zep shark incident.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 23 March 2012 22:28 (twelve years ago) link

Kr and I took the day off work and went to M. Henry for brunch and then a matinee of The Hunger Games. Good times.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 23 March 2012 22:29 (twelve years ago) link

Love M. Henry. Have you been to M. Henrietta? I will eat there some day.

I think the shark incident is in Hammer of the Gods? But I also think it's not true,

It has it's own Wikipedia page.

Courtney and I heard last night that there are sort of "regular" shootings in Hamlin Park - the one at Damen and Barry with the really good pool. Actually we were at house a couple blocks from there and when Courtney mentioned that her co-worker's acquaintance randomly got shot in the face in that park our host said that a gang has moved into the area and they "regularly" shoot random people who cut through the park.

It seems like such a sterile, gentrified area, but it's only a block from some grittier areas like the Lathorp projects on Diversey.

The person who got shot in the face is fine, BTW. It only hit their face, not the brainial region.

And lol, Courtney and I stood at the edge of the park at 1:00 a.m. to get cabs.

I've run through Lathrop Homes area. Didn't seem too bad at the time.

Jeff, Saturday, 24 March 2012 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

You know what looks like it would suck about living there? The steam vents near some apartments' windows. I walked by there after Nick's show the other night and it was cool enough to have windows open, but the hot steam was blowing into the windows. Blech.

saw a guy on a motorcycle get hit by a car yesterday. fortunately a low-speed impact, guy seemed fine (rolled off and stood up pretty much right away, was walking around assessing damage etc), but still startling. of course there was some d-bag yelling from down the block at the woman who was driving the car "DIDN'T YOU SEE THAT MOTORCYCLE? YOU SAW THAT MOTORCYCLE! DON'T LET HER GET AWAY WITH THAT!" which is helping nobody at all

future worm food (n/a), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

In that d-bag's defense, every time I've seen someone get hit by a car, my overwhelming urges is to engage in hostile yelling at the driver (out of fear and upsetness as much as legit anger).

Glad motorcycle guy was okay!!!

carl agatha, Monday, 26 March 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

I'm glad the motorcyclist was OK and lol at chaos-promoting bystander. She should carry confetti, firecrackers,
and an air horn to make the most of confusion.

I had a dream last night that many of us (also D33p@k, more on that later) lived in a GIANT three-flat with open sewer pipes that extended into the living areas and were clogged with the scourge of Chicago sewers, aka sewer otters. So I had to go around and plunge all of the pipes, which pulled all of the sewers otters out. They didn't want to live in the sewers so they stayed in the apartment and became my sewer otter army, which was super handy because all y'all were snorting mushrooms (they came in bricks of peanut butter colored damp powder) and acting super foolish, especially D33p@k who kept lighting the wrong ends of cigarettes and then throwing them behind the furniture. When I tried to make him clean up after himself, he curled up in a ball and said he was tripping too hard for basic household cleanliness. I was in the process of deploying a sewer otter unit to take care of the problem when Jeff woke me up.

Also, askance johnson, if you haven't downloaded it yet, there's a really excellent ep of The Horror from last week - a radio adaptation of The Rats in the Walls by The Black Mass. Good story, very well acted, and there's a little bit of audio artifacts on the transfer that actually add nicely to the sense of creeping horror and madness.

idgi - what does this have to do w/ the eavesdropping law?

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 14:43 (twelve years ago) link

you've never overheard someone singing in the shower and laughed (even silently) at them? what if the whole world had the opportunity to share that laugh?
i dunno maybe it's not related

there's a thing on wbez right now about "guilty pleasures" and i wonder when did 848 turn into the red eye?

carl, dan: why have we never tripped balls w/ D33p@k??!

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:11 (twelve years ago) link

I <3 Carl the Dog tweeting so much.

The odds of me tripping balls ever again are slim as it is, and the odds of me doing it around Big D are nonexistent. He's a fine man, but no.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

Big D = d33p@k, not Big D of Carl, Tweeting authorship.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

hahaha that is equally improbable

Paul Smon (La Lechera), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

Right? I imagine that would not go well either.

I think I'll just stay sober.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

carl, thank you for my new screen name and, while I have subscribed to the horror, I haven't actually listened to it yet bcz I spent most of last week listening to a 4 hr podcast on germanic tribes and the fall of the roman empire.

but I am super excited to listen to the rats in the walls! I love that story and am glad you thought it a good production.

ooh, what was it?! i need podcasts for my trip! i saw a long documentary about stone circles in the UK and it was excellent! recommended even if the music could have been better throughout
trailer is pretty well made, imo

Paul Smon (La Lechera), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

it was the latest episode of "dan carlin's hardcore history", which I'd never listened to before. He can be kind of annoying bcz he's too "radio host-y" but I thought it was still enjoyable and informative.

deploying a sewer otter unit (askance johnson), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

would watch the stone circle doc even if, yeah, the music seems bad and it is mixed way way too high!

no kidding

it's like the chung-chung in law & order

carl, dan: why have we never tripped balls w/ D33p@k??!

This is not something I ever want to do. You guys, fine, but pak, no. <3 the dude but no.

dan m, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

I used to listen to Hardcore History but he was too aggro or something. Maybe that's not quite right. Too focused on wars and dates and not enough color commentary, maybe? But this was years ago, and the fact that his podcast is still going makes me think it's worth trying again. I am definitely interested in Germanic tribes and the fall of the Roman Empire (although four hours is a little long for commute entertainment).

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I could see his style getting grating. Like the whole conceit of the episode I listened to was that the Germanic tribes were just like big biker gangs. Which I suppose is fine as far as it goes, but he just kept repeating it.
I also subscribed to this podcast "The History of Rome" which so far has 173 episodes! Though it's getting towards the fall. It's supposed to be very good.
