don't really care for either, but I'll drink red wine

red but i care for both

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 2 April 2012 02:23 (twelve years ago) link

is it a thing outside Tucson to put an ice cube in your white wine?

Here Comes Abbryone (Abbbottt), Monday, 2 April 2012 02:23 (twelve years ago) link

I will drink both though I don't really drink red wine anymore. It makes me completely crazy drunk in a way that nothing else does. It's basically why much of 2001-3 are a little spotty.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 2 April 2012 02:24 (twelve years ago) link

Red. Have never developed a taste for white.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 2 April 2012 02:25 (twelve years ago) link

I've seen people add ice to white wine Abs but I don't think you're really supposed to.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 2 April 2012 02:25 (twelve years ago) link

it's frowned on but let's be honest if you're drinking some bog standard plonk who cares really?

"oh no ice will ruin the integrity of this supermarket chardonnay"

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 2 April 2012 02:28 (twelve years ago) link

I like red wine chilled, too. I am a wine rule rebel. It's probably also a "rule" that you should be able to smell it and since I'm breaking that, might as well throw all the others away too.

Yeah all my wine comes out of a box. Every time I drink of it, I ponder the nouveau riche wine drinker in Roald Dahl's "The Butler" who ruined his palate through too much shitty wine. Basically anything I know about fine wine is through Roald Dahl stories.

Here Comes Abbryone (Abbbottt), Monday, 2 April 2012 02:30 (twelve years ago) link

red wine shdn't be as warm as people think, the idea of serving it at room temperature allowed for the fact that people's rooms used to be colder pre-central heating

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 2 April 2012 02:31 (twelve years ago) link

Well yeah NV otm. I hate Chardonnay though and rarely drink it. If I am having white it's more often then not a pinot grigio.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 2 April 2012 02:31 (twelve years ago) link

I can't really drink red wine hardly at all any more but from a plain "what's better" perspective the answer's still red.

have to be careful with red because of migraines but when it's good it can be far more interesting/complex than white wine. i like white wine tho -- esp when it's earthy and a little herbaceous.

white wine nice in summer times on hot evenings, but reds are delicious and are more conducive to vices like smoking and alleyway hookups I've said too much I vote red

dayo, Monday, 2 April 2012 12:10 (twelve years ago) link

I can't conceive of a dinner without red wine whereas sometimes I go months without drinking white. It only occurs to me to order a sauvignon blank when it's July in Florida.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 April 2012 12:13 (twelve years ago) link

I've never really liked wines, except for sparkling wine. But if I have to drink something, it'll be white, as the bitterness of red (not to mention the aftertaste) just isn't for me at all.

Tuomas, Monday, 2 April 2012 12:15 (twelve years ago) link

Basically all I drink these days is either beer or dry cider. Most liquors are too strong for me, and everything else is either too bitter/sour (wines, vermouths, bitters), or too sweet (non-dry ciders, mixers).

Tuomas, Monday, 2 April 2012 12:18 (twelve years ago) link

red red red

but i've learned to like white in recent years. alvarinho vinho verde from portugal is refreshing in summer

demolition with discretion (m coleman), Monday, 2 April 2012 12:26 (twelve years ago) link

^^^^ yep. It's a staple of Mother's Day and Father's Day parties here. Always kept ice cold.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 April 2012 12:31 (twelve years ago) link

at the risk of sounding pretentious I'll say red interacts better w/food (perhaps cause red's what I'm used to). and eating while u drink definitely tempers being drunk. but if you start w/cocktails and then switch to red wine at dinner all bets are off. perhaps white is more mellow in that situation

demolition with discretion (m coleman), Monday, 2 April 2012 12:31 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not particularly well-versed in wines so I'm not going to vote. When I drank wine a lot, I drank more reds than whites, but I was usually just drinking whatever was on sale at Vons, so the reds were mostly dubious and unsatisfying while the whites were almost always piss.

However, I've had some champagnes that I've liked an awful lot, so I probably should really investigate whites at some point.

beachville, Monday, 2 April 2012 12:32 (twelve years ago) link

I prefer red, though I've had some good whites lately.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Monday, 2 April 2012 13:50 (twelve years ago) link

I don't drink nearly as much red as I used to and I'm really enjoying the whites I've been discovering over the last decade or so so I'll go with white. Plus, champagne!

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Monday, 2 April 2012 13:53 (twelve years ago) link

So, my (extended) family are a bunch of wine experts – not snobs – because they planted and own/owned a vineyard that they sold in the early '90s. All I ever drank growing in my yout were expensive Gewürztraminers and desirable Rieslings, and other dessert and ice wines, so I have a bad and weird palate. I can't taste the difference b/w most whites, and they're really acrid to my tongue. Really, I only like full-bodied reds that cost less than $15, because otherwise I think about wastefulness.

Rieslings don't have to be super sweet btw. I've had a few great German halbtrocken or trocken Rieslings which were lovely.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

exception proving the rule? I've had good gewürtz too, but they're few and far between, and 99% of them taste like unripe grape syrup

I feel bad for ditching white wine...the lack of stained teeth/lips and red face/neck does weigh heavily in its favor for me. but a good red is just soooooo tasty!

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 2 April 2012 15:49 (twelve years ago) link

alcoholic friend of mine was at a party, drank loads of red wine, puked on new carpet.
hosts of course freaked out and told him to clean it up.
deep in the back of his mind he remembered something about white wine being useful for getting rid of red wine stains.
but as he had puked up the red wine, drunken logic told him that puked up white wine would work better.
so ... he drunk a bunch of white wine & stuck his finger down his throat.

I've got a better palate for whites--love gewurtzes, viogniers, roussanes. My favorite reds taste more like black olives than berries, but sometimes they'll just taste like "red wine."

All this wine nonsense! You get all these wine people, don’t you? Wine this, wine that. Let’s have a bit of red, let’s have a bit of white. Ooh, that’s a snazzy bouquet. Oh, this smells of, I don’t know, basil. Sometimes you just want to say, sod all this wine, just give me a pint of… mineral water.

i am poor though, and fuck paying $40 or whatever for a bottle of wine at a restaurant

the relative values of red or white wine among oenos follow a sort of pattern from other fields in which partisans get heavily invested

white wines are delightful, douce, undemanding, here today gone tomorrow sweet nothings, they are suggestive of girlish chatter, hedgerows, citric peel and mannered stupidity

red wines are tannic, heavy, complex, they can be cellared for aeons and nurture only rich overtones like a bosendorfer in an echo chamber, they are so viscous that they might have sloughed out from some poor exsanguinated levantine

and these unwitting biases afflict even ppl who choose between the £5 red plonk and £5 white plonk to drink straight outta the bottle

the latter is likely to be more successful 80% of the time ime (u probably cant fit ice cubes in the neck of a wine bottle but why not just put it in the freezer for a while?)

those who are atttached to certain archetypes about the different colours could maybe check some outliers from the two camps

like a condrieu, a northern rhone which is usually 14% abv and has the sort of depths u can find in the local reds....there are white priorats that go up to 15% which i am going to try one of these days

similar a good red village burgundy from the cote d'or can have 1314234% more flowery perfumey minerality than yr average crappy chardonnay

red.

wine is pretty delish. it was a wonderful day when i realized i could drink a lot of wine, get really light-feeling and chatty (imagine!) and drunk, and totally avoid the terrible hangovers i got when drinking too much scotch or vodka
