Reposting from the 1940 thread, this is the nearest corner to my current residence, taken in 1949:

The grocery/butcher is now a laundromat, and the theater is an empty lot. I can't tell what the businesses in between are (Polkey's?), but it's probably safe to say that they're different from the taqueria and gay bar that are there now.

xp Actually, I zoomed in on the original photo, and Polkey's is a liquor store, and next door is a luncheonette. So maybe not that far off after all.

My current apartment building. I live on the top floor, middle of the on the long side. The site where I found this pic has floor plans and a write-up about the building from the 1910s. The building, the floorplans, and the block haven't changed a bit, except for the little trees are full-size now.

This is the public square where I live ca. 1920-28. Utrecht, the Netherlands. Less than 10 years after the houses on the right were built, our house is just outside of the frame. The building on the left is a primary school that's still there.

not v interesting, but the area is named for that rock, which is said to have been an important site for witchcraft back in the day. one of the other areas in my town has a name derived from the gaelic for 'evil one'. i guess it used to be a more interesting place than it is now.

I've been trying to research old photos of where I live now, but not turning up a whole lot. I did learn, however, that my town has a great History Center where one can go and look through their archives. For $30. Per hour. Is this normal? Seems so ridiculous and prohibitive.

Overhead shot of my neighborhood circa 1947 that I found in the university archives:

http://i.imgur.com/VmpQT.jpg

My house is just right of center a couple streets up from the bottom. The house was built in 1940 so this wasn't too long after they built a bunch of houses on an old farm so there are no trees yet, and all the other farmland in this photo is now covered by hudreds of apartment complexes.

iirc the one time I got a wild hair to go visit a county historical society, there was some sort of fee. $30/hr sounds pretty high, but then again you might get like one-on-one help from someone with a specialized expertise in the area's history.

beachville, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 14:49 (twelve years ago) link

ahh, now that I see it's north of Eglinton and not south I realize this isn't quite my neighbourhood - but there are so few details to go by I couldn't guess either way!

Thanks, I was just curious. My only other experiences with visiting historical societies was in high school and those smaller town places were super helpful and free, unless you wanted to copy information - then the fees kicked in, but iirc, they were still pretty reasonable.

You know what though? I was just guessing. I checked out two local county historical societies and a couple big city historical societies and the charge to use their libraries is either like $5/day or free (with fees for photos and duplication and stuff).

See, that makes more sense to me. I don't know, this thing kind of touches on a hot-button issue for me wrt to my town. It sort of has this reputation as a north shore rich community with huge houses and lots of $$$ (which it kind of is on the lake side of town), but it also does have a fair share of low-income neighborhoods that get completely ignored and priced out of lots of activities and I'm constantly enraged by this. For example, to access the public beach is $9 per person, for residents! Which is fine for the ritzy families that live in the mansions along the lake, but really prices out the working class families further west. And this $30 per hour research fee just underlines this type of thinking. Ugh, sorry not the place for this rant, it just infuriates me.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:09 (twelve years ago) link

well it's probably more due to the fact that the place has little to no income and public funding and not because they want to keep out all the poors

iatee, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

no, this town does not lack for income or public funding in general, and i've been to enough town and public information meetings to know there is a LOT of the latter going on, even if under the surface

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

i mean your point may be fair re: the historical society, but there is no reason to fence off a significant portion of a public beach and charge $9 to get in unless you wanted to filter the type of people using your beach

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

yes I wasn't arguing that that doesn't happen, just that a. historical societies don't tend to be swimming in cash, anywhere b. it's prob not the type of place where people are really worried about 'keeping out the wrong types'

iatee, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

no, it definitely is, at least in the minds of some people as i've learned through attending public information meetings. but this really isn't the place to get into that argument.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

but 'it's prob not the type of place' I meant 'the historical society' not 'your town'

Don't worry. I get pissed off about stuff like this too. I come from a town where all of the parks are public and free and you can pretty much immediately access nature whenever the hell you want. The county I moved to recently charges to use almost all of their parks. Bullshit, imo.

I live on 2nd Ave, this is way down the end of my street.

Thom's Cyclery has been closed for a while...even when it was open there was like, 2 bikes and an old electric oven in the window, it always looked like a shady kind of operation, handwritten sign saying 'OpEn'...def a shadow of its former self. Nice to see what it looked like back when people, you know, went there, lol.
