thought id put this out there before a horror poll gets going
lots of these can be streamed on netfllix as was mentioned & a batch were recently put out on blu

didnt really need to be a poll, i have no clue how i'll decide but w/e
"other" is if you desperately feel the need to vote for one of his pseudonymous porns or i guess a short

johnny crunch, Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:03 (twelve years ago) link

also wanted a dedicated thread to post so many amazing tumblr/blog stills that are out there~

I still don't quite get this dude. But he bores me in a fascinating enough manner that I want to keep trying. The Iron Rose is my fave, a sexy puzzle of a movie with dialogue by Maurice LemaƮtre.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 5 April 2012 04:15 (twelve years ago) link

oh god, i haven't seen enough JR to vote in good conscience, but i love LIVING DEAD GIRL (la morte vivante) so much that i can't not go for that. so spooky, sad, ridiculous and gorgeous. the few others i've seen* haven't liked anywhere near as much.

* including rape, requiem and what i think was sidewalks of bangkok. something very different in style and tone aar.

hard to find good pix from LMV that aren't NSFW

We should probably just make this thread NSFW so I can post stills from La Vampire Nue.

Instinctively moved to click on Fascination but went with Night Of The Hunted, in the end. Planning to watch Dracula's Fiance this weekend.

Une semaine de Bunty (ShariVari), Thursday, 5 April 2012 07:31 (twelve years ago) link

An all-time favorite director. Very hard to pick just one. Instinct is to go for Nude Vampire as my first and favorite from his vampire cycle, though Iron Rose and Night of the Hunted are both outstanding in their own way

Just in case anyone interested hasn't seen it already, Jeremy Richey's blog "Fascination: The Jean Rollin Experience" is amazing - enough stills, research, reviews and interviews there for a really substantial book.

Soukesian, Thursday, 5 April 2012 09:07 (twelve years ago) link

Nude Vampire is really great, the costumes are incredible. it made me wish he did a straight up cult movie

it's probably btwn iron rose & night of the hunted for me

plz report back abt draculas fiancee! xp

johnny crunch, Thursday, 5 April 2012 11:14 (twelve years ago) link

It looks like Night of the Hunted is actually the only one I've seen, quite surprised by this. I do love it, though the exposition at the end is the most cringe-making I've ever seen.

love druillet's poster for the nude vampire. i first heard of rollin in david pirie's fantastic vampire cinema bk, which was fully of sexy vampire images and is still a p gd read

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 5 April 2012 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

watched 'requiem' yesterday -- the long, chained up, sepia-toned dungeon rape scene is O_O

johnny crunch, Friday, 6 April 2012 11:07 (twelve years ago) link

was reading the cahill & tombs 'immoral tales' book ~ is interesting how they talk abt Requiem having v little sex in it & presumably the 1 i reference above being cut from most prints

is also interesting that that scene culminates in the 'bat' scene which seems to be a fav image amongst the world of pervy internet horror ppl

johnny crunch, Friday, 6 April 2012 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

many xps to contenderizer: im almost positive you'd like others of these if your that into 'living dead girl'.

'rape'& 'requiem' (can't speak abt 'bangkok') are imo a level below say, 'demoniacs' / 'lips of blood' / 'iron rose' / 'night of the hunted'

johnny crunch, Friday, 6 April 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

holy crap that druillet poster is gorgeous! want

and yeah, the requiem scene you mention disqualifies it from having "v little sex"

johnny crunch, Saturday, 7 April 2012 00:30 (twelve years ago) link

Nah that's fine.

was reading the cahill & tombs 'immoral tales' book

This book fueled like five years of me and my ex buying stuff from VSOM (before everything became DVDified).

watched a chunk of fascination @ a friend's house last night! "band practice" so i couldn't see the whole thing, but the 20-30 minutes i took a break with looked amazing.

Have only seen the first four, of which Nude is my favorite. I guess Iron Rose is the next to look at; thanks to all for the input here.

Thanks for putting this together, johnny. Great to see Night of the Hunted getting recognition!

Must track down his last couple, Mask of Medusa and La nuit des horloges, neither of which were available subbed last time I looked.

Soukesian, Thursday, 12 April 2012 09:07 (twelve years ago) link

TCM is showing The Iron Rose at 2am on Friday night/Sat morning!

Josefa, Friday, 13 April 2012 06:21 (twelve years ago) link

Wha?? That's nuts. There's boobage in it, is there not? Can TCM show that?

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 13 April 2012 07:38 (twelve years ago) link

four months pass...

i watched bacchanales sexuelles/fly me the french way - better than id been led 2 believe, joelle coeur is the best; sex scenes are def a bit forced but they are more playful than pervy imo. this 1 will def not be on tcm any time soon tho

five months pass...

a lot of his lesser-known stuff (including 1s i didnt even list in this poll like lost in new york & schoolgirl hitchikers) are now streaming on netflix. should be interesting 2 explore

johnny crunch, Saturday, 2 February 2013 23:58 (eleven years ago) link

my suspicion is that netflix is trying to max out its vampire/zombie/etc streaming content in any way it can

johnny crunch, Sunday, 3 February 2013 00:03 (eleven years ago) link

four years pass...

There are several of these on Kanopy Streaming (free through your library) FYI. I watched Lips of Blood a while back and found the opening and closing scenes really nice, the rest fairly goofy. Maybe it's the vampire teeth.

eleven months pass...

Caught a few of these at the Quad in NYC.

The Nude Vampire: Looks great all around. Really weird, disorienting plot. Quite original for the genre. Can't get enough of the Castel twins.

The Shiver of the Vampires: Has more of a one-track plot, but makes up for it with humor and visual audacity at every turn. Sandra Julien looks awesome in this, kinda like an auburn-haired Deborah Harry. Marie-Pierre Castel returns and steals the show.

Fascination: Not bad, a bit slicker and less wackadoodle than the above two. Cast was excellent but I felt I needed a bit more from the story.

oh hell yeah there's a jean rollin thread

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 16:24 (three years ago) link

watched the rape of the vampire (1968) last night. absolutely nonsensical, the story was def stretched to fit around the images, but what images!!!!

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 16:26 (three years ago) link

shiver of the vampires was the best one yet. almost comically slow yes but the shot compositions, the lighting, and the story all give off this seductive art-exploitation vibe without being very sleazy at all

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 September 2020 00:44 (three years ago) link

(nude vampire was also excellent but a little baggier overall, though i loved the weirdly involved plot)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 September 2020 00:44 (three years ago) link

also all of these films have had dynamite scores

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 September 2020 00:45 (three years ago) link

Highly recommend this anthology of critical/feminist writing on Rollin if you can find it somewhere:

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 20 September 2020 11:02 (three years ago) link

omg i already want that so bad

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:41 (three years ago) link

Requiem for a Vampire (1971) 0

shiver of the vampires had a sparer plot than the previous two and then this one is like "hm do we even need a plot???" and the answer is no you don't, all you need is two women in clown suits wandering around a castle

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:43 (three years ago) link

two weeks pass...

still steady progressing through these. watching fascination tonight. my ranking so far:

the iron rose
lips of blood
shiver of the vampires
the grapes of death
requiem for a vampire
the demoniacs
the nude vampire
rape of the vampire

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 October 2020 21:42 (three years ago) link

not sure why the iron rose speaks to me the most but it's the most dreamlike and uneventful

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 October 2020 21:42 (three years ago) link

like you can describe the entire plot in a sentence

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 October 2020 21:43 (three years ago) link

the demoniacs has two rape scenes that are really tough to get through but otherwise it's one of his more idiosyncratic films, it only becomes a true jean rollin film about wandering around ruins with two lesbians who look like sisters about halfway through

grapes of death was phenomenal and scary and ridiculous and probably too low in my ranking. really claustrophobic and nerve-wracking for how slow it was

lips of blood the true sleeper hit, great story, nonstop hallucinatory dreaminess

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 October 2020 21:56 (three years ago) link

fascination is fucking amazing!!!!

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 October 2020 23:32 (three years ago) link

i can fully see why night of the hunted won this poll. it is PROFOUNDLY sad, way moreso than any of his other films

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 00:53 (three years ago) link

London Live, the largely terrible TV channel on Freeview which seems to be some sort of tax loss/vanity project of Evgeny Lebedev's, has started showing the occasional Jean Rollin film. "The Iron Rose" is on right now.
