which I think is a silly story. I can't believe that it took until the widespread availability of computers for someone to figure out that those typewrittn characters together make a smiley face????? The real first smiley must be much, much older - mustn't it?

I refuse to be younger than a fecking emoticon. NO.

Yeah, a bit convenient that they just "happened" to find it a week before its twentieth anniversary. Rather suspiciuos, that...

yeah, tracer posted a link to the original messages on "attack of the emoticons"...

you've got these science guys saying "wouldn't it be grebt if we had someway of conveying our emotions" "mentalist" "ha ha :-) do you see?" "that roxor!"

"Wouldn't it be great if we had some way of conveying our emotions" ... with a keyboard ... with letters all over it ... yes, half-assed little pictograms are surely the answer!

Stuff like ILOL has been around for decades in non-computer forums, or at least in APAs (Amateur Press/Publishing Associations), and I see no reason why the same should not be true of 'emoticons.' Except for, as nabisco pointed out, the fact that APAns can probably use written language to convey emotions. Also, I usually interpret ;) or :> as HHOK (= Ha Ha Only Kidding).

I have a lady in my back pocket who says that Kate Masonic-Boom is OTM here.
