you know, if Paula Deen had asked for some "african american youths" to be dressed up as slaves at her wedding dinner, somehow I don't think that would be ok eithr

Still loving "Paul Deen."

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 27 June 2013 14:45 (ten years ago) link

Remember that weird GOP dinner in one of the Carolinas where they had African Americans in costume portraying slaves? AT LEAST THEY WEREN'T POURING SWEET TEA OUT FOR THE DINERS.

"We don't have much of a budget for the dinner? Well, what if we dressed the wait staff up like Holocaust victims. That way, folks wouldn't feel so bad about not having much on their plate!"

pplains, Thursday, 27 June 2013 14:46 (ten years ago) link

Man, I don't know if I'm making this up or if I read it somewhere or if it really happened but I went to Model UN when I was in high school and there was a group dinner event and I swear students were encouraged to skip dinner as some kind of Holocaust remembrance thing? Or maybe it was a famine awareness gesture? It was tacky as hell, whatever it was.

we can never grow as a people until we treat the least of our tumbler wites white folk with decency and respect.

Neanderthal, Friday, 28 June 2013 18:11 (ten years ago) link

I've never heard the word cracker used except in the context of white ppl saying its unfair that they aren't allowed to use racial epithets without censure whereas anyone is free to use the word cracker against them

carl agatha, Friday, 28 June 2013 19:24 (ten years ago) link

my first thought on seeing that actually was that it had something to do with the band

I hear "cracker" solely from hip friends who boast about not owning any records that aren't world music or jazz.

fwiw the oft cited kleck study is pretty well debunked here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States#Self-protection

Kleck's figures apparently showed that guns were used many times more often for self-defense in burglaries than there were reported incidents of burglaries of premises whose occupants were awake and armed with firearms

This thread will be a year old (and probably hit ten thousand posts) this month. Can't really believe there was a time when it wasn't part of my ILX life.

yeah it's kinda funny to think back that FB at one time wasn't a place where you merely splattered memes all over your Timeline every day. hell even the "Like" feature didn't come around until 2009. I remember the early days where you'd put up a status and that was about it. were you able to comment on people's statuses originally? I joined in 2006 but didn't use it much until 2008.
