I'd offer to read and react, Mark, but what with not having read the book since the mid-'70s and not having seen the film and not remembering much and not really liking LotR or being interested in it, I may not be precisely your target audience.

For some reason, Sept. 22nd is "Hobbit Day", and thus begins "Tolkien Week."

I have no idea if this is movie-related, or if it was a recognized day in the past...

In LOTR, that's the date of both Bilbo and Frodo's birthday (though as I'm sure Mark S could note, this is actually inaccurate since the Hobbit calendar is not exactly equivalent to the Gregorian and therefore etc. etc. etc.).

re : the article, I'd just like to say that Chris Ackerley rocks the motherfucking house - he's just finished the world's largest Beckett Encyclopedia etc etc. However he has been known to describe me as "a troubled young man" (to the police & my parents!) so eh.
