Sleepy

Does anyone have any tips to help me sleep when I can't get to sleep? Last night the neighbours were playing really loud music at 12:45am so I banged at the wall and they turned it off but then I still couldn't sleep. I eventually got to sleep and I done this by counting from a thousand to one backwards very slowly. I could also read a very boring book, maybe this would work? Anyone else know anything that could help?

i find that reading something i am really interested in sends me off more quickly, cause i want to concentrate and it wears out my head to the point of 'yep now i can seriously just close my eyes and head to the land of nod'

late night TV. They show baseball at 2 in the morning over here, and if ever I can't sleep I just watch it for a bit.

I have terrible insomnia, so I feel your pain! Sometimes a mug of hot chocolate (or some other drink involving warm milk) helps, or else beer or wine (though, admittedly, alcohol-induced sleep is never as good in the long run). Sometimes I purposefully lose myself in pleasant imaginings, and then I no longer mind that I'm lying there awake, which helps me fall asleep (if that makes any sense).

I listen to music on my headphones, it distracts me from the thoughts bouncing around my head keeping me awake. Usually I just lie there and listen to an album and suddenly realise I've missed several songs by having fallen asleep for a while. Once I'm in that sleepy kind of mode I can turn off the music and go to sleep.

Opening a window sometimes helps- if I'm having trouble sleeping, having the room warm & stuffy makes it worse.

Well, there's the er.. one other *really obvious thing* to do when you're alone.

Wish you weren't?

I know it sounds odd but I find spelling words really helps.
Some sleep researchers found that counting wasn't taxing enough to stop the subconcious bubbling up new thoughts.
Allowing a random word to form and then s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g it out slowly occupies the mind just enough to quieten the babble.
I suffered from chronic insomnia for years, but since discovering this technique have rarely had any problems dropping off.

Brandy with honey and hot milk.

i too feel your pain. the only consistent cure involves beer and weed. i'm guessing this doesn't help.

Go through your times tables. I find that by the time I get to the 11 times table I am either frantic at my maths inability or unconscious. Usually the latter.

Beer and weed always help, dude! I have the same problem, but I take pills. Not the greatest idea.

Try getting a non-cold like mine and you will barely be able to stand up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Swim for one to two hours around 4 hours before you want to go to bed, then you will be exausted enough you will just fall asleep.

You spoil all my fun Ned Raggett.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)
