1) The VW (?) ad w/ that super cute girl going through the 5 boytoys, showing off different looks (super cute every time), that dog (how it grows!), and "Genius of Love"!

2) The Virgin Mobile (?) w/ the subtitled art class drawring pictures about their cell phone. "Hot lava! Hot lava! Yeaaaaaaaaaah! Hot lava!" (Actually, all the Virgin Mobile (?) commercials I've seen are great, esp. the one w/ the pancakes and the guy wearing that Members Only jacket singing his li'l heart out.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Ikea and the lamp.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, I feel sorry for the lamp.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

That 7-11 ad with the kid sticking his tongue out at a two-way mirror office window to check out how it's gone all blue, and the businessman in that office pausing in mid-phonecall to stick his tongue out in retort (with accompanying "nnnnnnnn!" teasing sounds).

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

1) The businesslink.net advert, with the little kids offering business advice ("you could use some eskimos, who are actually called Inuits)
2) "IS MONEY EVIL???!!!"
3) The new Grolsch one. How the man hasn't been knighted yet is a damn mystery.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the Ikea one too........seeing a swede say anything snarky is awesome in the same way it is to witness a fine bitch fart........and I love the Nike one with that Olive Oyl looking chick hopping objects to sneak into class......i love dorks.......girl if you can read this, i will house you and treat you good.......ill shower you in donut sugar and if anyone talks shit i'll dead him deader than shit, guaranteed.

Ramosi, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 08:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I know its BBC, but the ad for the 'new urban music' radio channel is awesome.

jon (jon), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

the halifax one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha that advert is filmed on my old estate - there is nothing "awesome" at all about that trashy falling-apart hell... as for Halifax - are you having a TURKISH mate?

Adverts with cute babies in are brilliant.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Clarks shoes. The ads hit me in so many different spots. Very clever and beautifully made.

David (David), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

no not at all, its a good ad precisely becuz it is annoying.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

YES YES Clarks shoes!!!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

By the same token the Gap ad with Marianne Faithfull and wossername out of "Crossroads" (Manning?) should be counted as a good ad, as it is diabolical but sticks in the mind.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

sarah - ah, but I live in a coutnry cottage surrounded by 'Liberty and Livelihood' types. The slums got so much soul, as the Dead Kennedys once said.

jon (jon), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I love that ultra-distrubing Steve Madden ad with the two animated girls with the enormous heads.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

How can the girls in those Free Your Arms ads be so gosh darned rowr? How? Come on, how?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Um. Cos they're models and it's their job to look pretty / sexy all the time and a team of experts has spent about 19 hours making them up / doing their hair / dressing them nicely / lighting them flatteringly. Unless that was a rhetorical question...

Emma, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe it was.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Every time we see that VW ad my roommate and I start humming "Genius of Love" for minutes, then finally one time I got over the song enough to notice how cute the girl was! It's a hard ad to top.

Dave, is the other ad you mentioned the one where the unicorn comes out of the painting and the girl gets on it then disappears? If so, I say that's one of the better commercials running.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

They are still running the great Volkswagen ad with the game show contestant; I think it is a brilliant piece of premise-plotting.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot lava, Vinnie! HOT LAVA!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes yes, the lamp... but have you seen THE CREAMER??

I loved the Nike ad with all the moments of preparations. Their editors are underpaid.

JM, Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Definitely the Clarks one featuring "Ca Plane pour moi"

Anonymous (Anonymous), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, Clarks shoes by a country mile. Followed by the Colgate one where the 'artist' guy throws toothpaste/mouthwash at a big canvas, for its sheer mesmerising evil.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

That one is fantastic Archel, it just has a really annoying voiceover.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

On the subject of appalling/frightening adverts (that Colgate one is beyond bad), anyone seen the one that's on during the day featuring Thora Hird? It frightens the life outta me, I mean, is she meant to look like that, shouldn't they have embalmed her or something first?

Anonymous (Anonymous), Thursday, 26 September 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Daytime adverts for adjustable beds and stairlifts etc are a whole different kettle of evil anyway and should not be contemplated on an empty stomach. I am now having trouble thinking of ads that are actually GOOD rather than just compellingly bad.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 26 September 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the guy on the Invention Channel who's really excited about the dent remover and the drilling/polishing/buffing/cleaning tool. It makes me want to buy his inventions.

The Miller commercial with all the people falling down like dominos is the best.

kirsten (kirsten), Monday, 8 December 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Great. A commercial thread. I have a burning question.

Has anyone seen this new James Bond-style advert for Meltus? Well, is the bad guy (Chesty Cough) Herbert Lom or what? I've only seen the thing twice, so I'm not sure at all. It sure as hell sounds like him, and looks about right too (though it makes him a pretty young looking 86; he hasn't acted for ten years).

Enlightenment please!

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Monday, 8 December 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

One of he finest is the 99.9% clean heat commerical where it's about what would it be like if you could see heat. The visual images and music, just, aaaaaaaaoh yeah (never gets old)

The Dockers "spin the bottle" commercial (which is here, but keep in mind it starts playing immediately after you've accessed the page).

I know what you're thinking: "Blech blech blech yuppies! How could you, Michael? How could you?" But I just loved the amazed, delicate look on their faces as they realize that, yes, the bottle is spinning in the table, and yes, my god, the bottle is really going to point in the very direction you'd hope.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 14 May 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I still love the Sonic commercials... I think Pleasant Plains has issued a dissenting opinion on these. "Bacon sounds awesome...I wanna hang with bacon."

Mark C, Monday, 3 September 2007 09:40 (eighteen years ago)

I only saw it once, but I liked the AT&T Wireless commercial with Roger Clemens about how the only reason he's playing yet one more season is because the call to his wife dropped.

Also, the American Express commercial where McEnroe goes the line judge's house and gives him a hug.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 September 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

i know everyone will hate me for saying so but while over in the states last week i caught those cavemen ads. And i loved em.

Ste, Monday, 3 September 2007 10:32 (eighteen years ago)

The gorilla. While "In the air tonight" plays.

I say no more.

Mark G, Monday, 3 September 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

I wondered how long it would take for that to be mentioned. I've seen it 5 or 6 times now and it still makes me smile like an idiot and drop whatever I'm doing so I can watch it.

yea i like those.

i'm also really into the milky minutes commercials.

Surmounter, Monday, 20 October 2008 05:44 (seventeen years ago)

Milky minutes cracks me up. I could totally see my family in that scenario, with my mom yelling at us and we all snark on her.

kate78, Monday, 20 October 2008 06:07 (seventeen years ago)

AAAAhhhh. you peeps are gonna call me a wacko, and yet I was an ad sales exec in my first career.

1)any Target ad. They are seriously cheesy & appealingly done.

2)General Electric; I was so opposed to the new ad campaign and used to think that everytime they ran an ad that didn't have the "We bring good things to life" tag; that they were throwing away their campaign money, brand and label. They have outdone themselves with their ad campaign and I am thrilled to have been called out as WRONG.

Wiggy Woo, Monday, 20 October 2008 06:10 (seventeen years ago)

i kind of hate the target ads, they're just so innane. "chic set, jet set -- smart set"

GE will always be classic
