Quite right!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 21:08 (five years ago) Permalink

this show is kind of fascinating in a "gender is all performance!" way - everyone congratulating each other (incl the judges) on how well they achieve some kind of archetypal female-ness

four weeks pass...

Okay come on, I KNOW I'm not the only person on here watching.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:38 (five years ago) Permalink

I promise to start now.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:41 (five years ago) Permalink

Marilyn Monroe should've been in the bottom. She didn't do anything.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:48 (five years ago) Permalink

Yeah that was an epic flop. I like Ivy well enough but that made me go "Whuh?"

Jinkx, Alaska and Roxy were the best overall, but Jinkx just owned it period.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:51 (five years ago) Permalink

I like Ivy too and I think she was lucky she didn't have to lipsynch against Lineysha. I didn't expect her to do so well (but her Celia Cruz was unforgiveable).

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:24 (five years ago) Permalink

Deep clusterfuck, that. Also what WAS Detox thinking.

um hi I just started watching season 5 online having never watched and omg I'm hooked

I'll be caught up in no time :D

Yeah I just figured that out...gotta love these bitchy girls. MORE drag homework? *twists arm*

Shanté, you stay!

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:43 (five years ago) Permalink

Season 2 still the best so far, I think.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:43 (five years ago) Permalink

I just binge-rewatched season 3 over the weekend on Netflix and I might have to vote for that one. Then again I just like Raja a hell of a lot, so.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:44 (five years ago) Permalink

Yes for Raja and Manila. But the rest, not so interesting. Yara-Sophia maybe...

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:47 (five years ago) Permalink

It actually came down to the right final four I thought, Alexis was a character in her own right. But yeah Yara (Xara?) was next level.

I still haven't seen season four! For some stupid reason it's not on Netflix -- it was for about two seconds and then went away again without explanation. (Already know who won, obv., but I'd like to see it happen.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:49 (five years ago) Permalink

Wait what!! Can't you watch it on logo online or something? We can't in Canada but I thought you could in the US.
Season 4 was pretty good, although they tried to create too much unnecessary drama. But I'll let you see by yourself.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:58 (five years ago) Permalink

You can see the Untucked episodes from season 4 on the site but not the main shows. Since you can buy all the shows from iTunes maybe they want to go that route? Who knows!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:07 (five years ago) Permalink

Makes sense. If RuPaul had a dollar everytime she mentions iTunes...

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:13 (five years ago) Permalink

Hey, house payments are probably up there. (And I don't begrudge Ru ANY success and trappings.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:18 (five years ago) Permalink

I don't either. At least she's very upfront and funny about it.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:25 (five years ago) Permalink

Fun fact we learned during the All Stars season: Jujubee's real name is actually Airplane!

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:28 (five years ago) Permalink

Hahaha yeah I remember thinking "Wait, what?"

I also love that Manila's real name is the none-more-Minnesota Karl Westerberg.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:35 (five years ago) Permalink

Lol wow

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:58 (five years ago) Permalink

Almost caught up on S5 now yay!

Every single time Alyssa glams up for the runway all I think is JOAN COLLINS JOAN COLLINS JOAN COLLINS

I don't know why but I think I like Detox. Jinkx is great but I dunno if the unglam thing is going to hold out for her or not. I love her for it, but it could wear thin.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 22:53 (five years ago) Permalink

I will say this, have started following her on FB -- win or lose she seems to be having a blast and is booked for other live appearances and things and more this year already, so I like to think of her as winning already!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 23:13 (five years ago) Permalink

Meanwhile, it's a little surprising to see such a mostly white group at this point. Not that I think the show is biased, appears to be more luck of the draw season by season in terms of who survives.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 02:28 (five years ago) Permalink

I do have to quibble with some of the assertions there -- while Sharon's success in 4 is great, in 3 Raja was more than a little disruptive herself -- as was Manila really; if anything Alexis was the one let go at the end precisely for being full pageant.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:27 (five years ago) Permalink

I haven't watched all the seasons, but I don't get the impression that they are only seeking pageant or necessarily favoring that. And while I noticed the lack of "camp history" in the S5 girls, isn't there an argument that maybe a lot of queens are trying to let go of that, like that cliche of teens not wanting to know about older music? I mean, I'm bummed that they don't know who Little Edie is but maybe when they see Jinkxs win they go find out. And it doesn't mean they're any more terrible for what they don't know of their history. If anything, it's kind of fabulous that they all came to that same place *without* it.
I dunno. That article seemed a little too buttclenched.

Only three eps in (S5; no previous exposure to the show). Anyone care to rank the hottest queens out of drag? So far from S5 I'm into Lineysha and, oddly, Ivy.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:03 (five years ago) Permalink

xpost I just watched the S2 Snatch Game, Pandora's Carol Channing was hysterical, so good.

Lineysha's gorgeous. Ivy's not a crazy answer either, that bone structure really is something else. I was thinking about her terrible Marilyn and found myself wondering why the hell she didn't do Joan Rivers. Eh. Hindsight

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:14 (five years ago) Permalink

Yes she would've been a great Joan Rivers!

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:18 (five years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I know this is probably the exact rongest angle to take on the show, but I'm finding it very interesting navigating my impressions/levels of attraction to certain contestants when they're in drag vs. when they're not in drag.

Alyssa's *almost* attractive but it's like her lips are too big for her and she keeps tripping over them when she talks. Beautiful eyes though.

i found the discussion between ru and the vixen to be very interesting in that it encapsulated the widening generational divide in how to deal with serious structural problems within society. ru saying “i swallowed discrimination to get here” and the vixen essentially saying “fuck that” sits next to, like, debates about appropriation or no-platformimg vs “debate”... it would perk the interest of middle aged male columnists if they had any idea

i love when Ru loses his shit. He hasn’t been that loose & fired up since the S2 reunion with Tammie Brown “i dont see you walking children in nature”

Asia was pretty otm, but Sarge is right, it def showed up the gap in thinking, generationally, between Ru & Vixen

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 24 June 2018 17:50 (one month ago) Permalink

otm [2]

For many people, but esepecially younger generations, enduring tone-policing, bullying and outright abuse in order to 'make it' just doesn't cut it anymore. There's nothing empowering about smiling and nodding while you're forced to endure horrible behavior from someone who wields so much control over your life. Ru needs to crawl out of his ass and try to understand this new context Drag Race has found itself in, instead of fighting it. If behaving like a "professional" meant Vixen sitting there and apologizing while Eureaka wasn't reprimanded as well, then they can keep it and she had every right to walk out of there.

I don't think many writers would touch on this issue because honest self-relfelction is hard, especially when it's about your career trajectory.

For the record, the moribund nature of this thread this season matches my own feelings about the show at this point.

It’s dead.

i don’t think the show or the excitement that can be derived from it is dead by any means but aquaria’s bizarrely perfunctory reaction to being named winner i think summed up how... orchestrated (inevitable if i was being nice) this whole season felt. still a decent number of memorable queens tho imo.

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 June 2018 06:25 (one month ago) Permalink

When I first saw Asia’s costume I assumed her boobs were going to shoot fireworks or something. Even if the butterflies had ‘performed’ they would have been pretty invisible on a stage like that. Really bad idea (though the audience reactions were hilarious).

Madchen, Friday, 29 June 2018 10:21 (one month ago) Permalink

Poor Asia. She was my favourite out of the final four, and she messed that up so badly. I cannot imagine why she thought that would be a good idea. Where did she get it from? Is this a thing people do?
I really hope they bring in a "no live animals of any kind" rule after this. As if they ever thought they would need one.

More than two queens lipsynching at one time is always a disaster, imho. And that final lipsync was bad. Kameron and Aquaria both looked wound up and desperate, and Eureka was way out of her league.

trishyb, Friday, 29 June 2018 10:32 (one month ago) Permalink

Interesting that they had picked a song with three singers for the final lip synch. It’s almost as if they knew...

Madchen, Friday, 29 June 2018 10:53 (one month ago) Permalink

Absolutely.

Eureka's reveals were fine, and everything, during "If." But I clocked her not knowing the lyrics multiple times during that song. It was rigged to feature 3 queens at the end.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Friday, 29 June 2018 11:09 (one month ago) Permalink

wow yeah that was underwhelming. Filming all the queens "winning" and then not revealing it til the finale actually airs sucks ALL of the energy out of the room bcz we are left with these weak-ass feigned reactions, ugh.

Exactly what I thought too. And that way the audience at the taping only knows about one queen who doesn't win.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 29 June 2018 20:06 (one month ago) Permalink

They haven't ever come up with a satisfactory way to wrap up seasons. Either they capture a genuine reaction in a studio vacuum, or they pre-tape multiple canned possible endings that are ragingly false.

^^^^ a pretty unapologetic takedown

RuPaul’s racial philosophies, which include a classic white American “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” maxim and a generational distance from the queens who compete on her show, are indicative of her deep-seated respectability politics. The “advice” she offered the Vixen was just a stone’s throw away from the notorious language once espoused by Bill Cosby, or Charles Barkley, or Ronald Reagan — exhortations to black personal responsibility and rules of behavioral comportment; it implied that the Vixen, in her loudmouthed navigation of the world and her insistence on addressing racism, is lacking in self-discipline and respectability.

Too often the burden of civility and amenity falls on the backs of those enduring oppression. For RuPaul to demand that the Vixen engage in a culture of silence, to expect her to choreograph her anger in order to appear less dissonant, less threatening, is to rob her of her voice for the sake of disproving the white myth of black inferiority. There is no “right” way to comport oneself in the midst of inequity. Such archaic criticisms directly contradict everything the art of drag itself stands for. When has protest art, or protest at large, ever been courtly?

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Sunday, 8 July 2018 17:46 (one month ago) Permalink

(Also floats the idea of giving Ru the axe and replacing her with Asia. Like that'll happen.)

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Sunday, 8 July 2018 19:12 (one month ago) Permalink

One thing I've seen repeated in all these pieces is that RuPaul is promoting a culture of silence and I think that's totally misreported just to fit their narratives. When Ru said that the Vixen could chose to not say anything, she was clearly refering to the drama between Aquaria and Miz Cracker. The Vixen didn't have to bring it up, but she decided to stir the pot.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:37 (one month ago) Permalink

I could accept that. I can not accept Ru's reaction to Asia in the reunion, though. Ru tends to conflate two seemingly similar but very different narratives of being a star and being the star of your own life. I can see the first of those two requiring you to casually throw people in your life away if they do not serve your needs, but I'm damned if I think it makes sense for the latter of those narratives.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:41 (one month ago) Permalink

Mm. And good piece there too.

Now that Drag Race Thailand is on WOWPresents Plus I may take the dive there -- but in a little bit, it was almost six months of DR stuff in general this year and I need a breather.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:46 (one month ago) Permalink
