ILX does through the keyhole, do you reckon if people you know saw your room now they could guess it was yours? I was thinking about this today and mine is pretty glaringly obvious, CDs everywhere, club flyers all over the desk, Mixmag and Muzik on the floor and a big Chemical Brothers poster on the wall.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

No.

Oh shit, they'd recognise the bed wouldn't they.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

right now, mine is covered in piles of books and boxes of misc stuff. the boxes of comics are downstairs, so you couldn't get it from that. if you looked hard in the boxes you'd find too much useless old computer hardware. oh, there's a V*ctr*x still sitting looking cute in the corner of the room.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a poster Robert Forster signed "To Andrew" on the wall.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Er Ronan yr room sounds like 60% of every other students in the Western hemisphere :) If it was only ILE through the keyhole I'd probably get it though.

I haven't got much stuff on the walls as I don't think we are allowed (although I am going to sod it and put stuff up anyway) - but there is one Afro Ken poster! And Kate Bush pictures on the floor, and er... everything else... on the floor... ha ha of course you could tell it was my room due to SPACESTATION PONGO!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think people would get mine. It's messy, stuff all over the place, and people like gareth would just have to look at the CD's to be able to say "hey! this is jel's room". And there are lots of comics and books and transformers and lego around.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

On the floor: The last three days issues of the Guardian, Hip Hop Connection, Viz, The Big Issue, "Executive Fitness for Men", a pair of cheap black jeans, two empty tissue boxes, CD stacker boxes, guitar with Powerpuff Girl stickers on it, the following CDs around the CD player: "Tigermilk", "DMC Present: Plus One Champion Sounds", "Silver Screen Shower Scene", "The Smiths: The Singles"

On the desk: two glasses, a load of free CDs I wanna get rid off, three shag bands, a dictaphone, coupons for free coke, hair brush, Bootsy Collins videos.

On the walls: Jake Roberts autograph, signed Drew Barrymore photo, Sopranos poster

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

the books in my room are a pretty good giveaway. the music slightly less so.

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I guess I'm IN my room, being/looking like me, which would be a giveaway.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

My room is lovely and tidy. I think people would look at it and go 'how dull'. However, I like it. So much storage space. I think Sarah and Tom might recognise it.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom, TWO empty tissue boxes? You have been busy......

Anonymous, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I can confirm that Lixis room is scarily tidy. Then again any room would look tidy next to my HELL HOLE of empty chicken boxes/half drunk BEER glasses/clothes all over floor/salt on floor from RickyT spilling wine on it and NO DAMN HOOVER to get rid of it oh GOD the horror the horror

AND I need new bed linen.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I'm IN my room

You greasy bounder. Get out of there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Then again mine probably looks tidy compared to Toms room. It is a continuum ect ect.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a ph34rful image of what Tom's room could look like!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The chicken box has only been there since Monday night and is going to be removed today - it is a reminder that I shd never get drunk ever again oh dear oh dear. Toms probably has more empty MILK CARTONS, I do not know as I do not tread in the ROOM OF DOOM.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I will try to fix the hoover tonight. I only wish I knew where the parts had gone. They are essential. I am going to have to fashion something out of toilet roll insides and sellotape. I am finding my carpet unbearably. Sarah, are you finding your carpet at all?

alix (alix), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Co-habitation = I no longer have a 'my' room. But anyone would be able to tell I live in our flat due to my habit of leaving credit card statements etc (with my name on obv.) all over the floor to 'remind me' to pay them...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

There are a few patches of carpet which are valiantly struggling to make themselves shown - I need to get a dirty clothes bin hmmm I wonder where you get one of those from. (Yes yes that or a washing machine so I would have clean clothes for once).

Have you tried ahem retracing yr steps on the day you put the parts... somewhere?

I am going to wash some more clothes in the bath tonight. I seem to be allergic to going to the launderette unescorted.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, I am going to the laundrette tonight. I have worn this one sock for 3 days now. It's gross. It's not even a pair. Retacing steps won't work. I was in the kitchen. I put the parts down. From there, unknown.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

perhaps they were baked into a pie — oh wait

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I shall come too, to the one on Brixton Rd I hope (and then possibly to the chinese next door). You do not want to know what measures I have resorted to in the 'underwear' stakes. Needless to say it is a ruin.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I think people could tell I lived in my old flat just from the following:

*huge number of art opening cards on wall/mantlepiece

*large Felix Gonzalez-Torres poster

*Edgy Style Magz of UK/US/France/Japan either on display or shelved.

*Ridiculous amounts of press releases and mailer envelopes - several trees die weekly at the hands of London prs sending things to me.

Am still in limboland betwen temporary accomodation and new flat, so miss the sense of home but not the soot layer from the faulty fireplace.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

My room is a complete disgrace but yeah it is obviously mine. Currently the pinnacle of disgrace is the porn Alan lent me which is flagrantly sitting in the middle of the floor. I had a sweep of the room for more obvious rubbidge on Monday so milk cartons etc are not quite the force they once were. There are CDs and records everywhere - a Shara Nelson 12" and a KLF album the most obvious I think - and a copy of Leadville on the floor too. A pair of moomins, a panda and a kitten on the bed.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

OH NO our house is NOT turning into a house of pr0n!! No!!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

my room is quite tidy though I'm buying too many recs so I'll have to start putting them under the bed soon as there's not much space left.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah it's no different to the computer porn he lent you!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

My room has few to no books (they are on shelves everywhere else) and plenty CDs but no records (in living room) and not the posters you would immediately associate with me, except that of all the Who posters to own I have one from "Ready Steady Go". The first thing you see in the hallway, though, is a Destiny's Child poster.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone with a cursory knowledge of my life / interests would be able to identify my room as mine pretty much immediately I think. The stacks of CDs and books for a start, but also the four piccies I have hanging up: one photograph from the Black Ark; one poster-sized mock up of an old ECFC programme done for some exhibition years ago; a Stanley William Hayter print and a poster for the first Phaidon volume on Michael Hopkins. It has HOPKINS written in big letters across it. That last one may give the game away somewhat.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Also the piles of clothes all over the floor.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

my room is sorta anon. all the cds are on the shelf in the closet, as well as the records, except for one crate under the bed. room is kept clean, always. this room, which I am vacating soon, has no shelf space, so all of the books are on the very long window ledge in the bathroom. I only had enough sticky stuff to put yp three posters - a Chuck Close self-portrait in B&W airbrush depicting rather messy hair and a cigarette dangling from the mouth; a picture of the marvelous building that Gehry did in Prague; one of whistler's nocturnes with the gold fireworks (I am bad with titles).

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom, TWO empty tissue boxes? You have been busy......
-- Anonymous ([email protected]), September 26th, 2002.

Using the bedsheet gives you fungal infections.

What?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i've just mopped every square inch of my floor with Murphy's Oil Soap!!!!!! hurrah!!! (now I can walk barefoot, for at least the next few days)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing on the walls, though some laminates hang off the doorknob. Several cans of Red Bull, a Starbucks Boston Mug, a Sam Adams pint glass on a shelf. Hockey equipment laying all around. A bag of cds, a bag of soccer related crap, my old computer and boxes for said computer, a suitcase and a hamper. A keyboard, a synth, an amp and alarm clock plus stereo. If you look before next week a ballast is in pieces well it gets fixed.
No desk, no dresser, albums tucked into the closet, singles on top. and a laundry bag currently empty normaly filled with empty clothes.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you all for reminding me I need to clean my room this weekend. Even though 've been saying that every week fo tthe last 6 months. In my room theres lots of stuff -CDs, magazines, books and empty 40's with barely a path to get to the the bed and stereo.

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

All my music is in here, so I think anyone looking through the thousands of albums would get some hefty clues. Simpsons figures, calendar and clock. Mags lying around: dance music ones, the London Film Festival brochure, When Saturday Comes. Most of the books are in the library, but about 150-200 art books are here (including the one I'm currently reading on Abstract Art), and on the floor is a pile of Krazy Kat related stuff, materials for an in-progressish article that I know I've mentioned here. I think that's a pretty solid collection of clues.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

books!! (same as every other room!!)

plus a little tapestry of moonintroll made for me by noted author nicola b*rker!!

and a double bass gathering dust

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I almost feel better about my own bedroom -- no dirty dishes (but it is a mare's nest of clothes, books and papers that need to be put away). An ILXer peeping through the keyhole would recognize it only if he/she remembered my description of the bed (and if at the time it wasn't covered in laundry).

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I have an entire apartment that I seemingly rent out exclusively to house candleholders, cat fur and junk mail.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

1 silver plastic tiara + All Hail Johnny Rotten shrine = obv. my room

Miss Laura, Thursday, 26 September 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night, my new flatmates (I presume) were standing outside my window which had the blond open a bit. "Look at that, it's a disgrace. [string of random non-secutur observastions]". Then they knocked on the window and ran off. I burst into tears.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup, you could tell.
New Order picture next to poster from Radical Fashion exhibition at the V&A and a piece of graffiti/ birthday card from friends which has a big A in the middle on walls.
Big jumble of candles and cosmetics and accessories and my one perfume by the mirror.
Big stack of unopened cardboard envelopes conatining 12" vinyl, which I should be excited about, but can't bring myself to open today.
Big piles of magazines everwhere, including the entire print run of the relaunched and then folded Nova which still makes me happy even though it is supporting my mirror.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"had the blond open a bit"???

blimey students eh!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Grrrahm that would never happen in America bcause of vast immaturity of US college students, ie. somebody is bound to have some sort of water cannon or super-soaker lying around to fend off judgemental types. I would throw myself at them, as there is much of it lying about.

(In my room are books books books incl. the guide to australian rock and pop, papers and forms relating to classes and the $*)(*#$ GRE, crap liquor bottles that cannot be binged on, ie. overproof rum, triple-sec, vermouth, oversized posters of miles davis and johnnyrottenonacrucifix, and at least three broken record players)

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

There is nothing in my room but my bed...

Perry Bernard (panterus), Friday, 27 September 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing at all? No bedding? No curtains? No light? No wardrobes?!!

Plinky (Plinky), Friday, 27 September 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.norfolkwindmills.com/images/room.jpg

Whose room was this?

Somebody, Friday, 27 September 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say that was Gareth's, or maybe Cooky's

chris (chris), Friday, 27 September 2002 09:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Gola box = Gareth

Tim (Tim), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but none of those clothes are brown??!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

He's wearing all the brown in the world while taking the picture.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm quite disconcerted that you knew that was my room. i suppose tim got a clue with the golas, but what made chris think it was mine?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 09:52 (twenty-three years ago)

You have a digicam and post pics from it sometimes?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)
