Recommend a good sitcom in the vein of Cheers

We've been watching all the Cheers episoded in chronological order, and we've only got season 11 left, and I was kinda wondering, what next? Basically I'm looking for a comedy series that:

- is witty, but not too post-modern/self-conscious/geeky
- is preferably character-driven, with well-rounded characters
- has continuity between episodes, but doesn't turn into a soap opera (like Friends)
- should have more optimism/humanism than cynicism/black humour

Is there anything like that out there? We've already watched every season of Frasier too, so that's not an option.

Newhart? I dunno, they never showed it over here, just guessing from what i've read about it

Yeah, I know, after Cheers it'll be pretty hard to find any substitute.

Taxi is one thing I've considered, because of the Cheers connections. How do the two compare?

I've also considered revisiting Northern Exposure, which I loved as a teen, but that's more of a drama than a sitcom.

Taxi is totally great and tonally very similar to cheers (if maybe with a more "grown-up" sort of feeling?) and if you liked the latter for the reasons you listed it's pretty likely you'll enjoy the former. I'd say give it a shot. Last I checked all the episodes were hanging out on youtube so give the pilot a whirl and see if it hits those Cheersy sweet spots.

Yeah, I think I'll give Taxi a shot.

Newhart sounds interesting, but looks like only the first season has been released on DVD?

Cosign Taxi.

Barney Miller is also great, you may find it hard to track down more than the first season.

I love that Marilu Henner has this:

Henner has highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) and can remember the specific details of her everyday life since she was a small child.
