People who say "You'll get to love me. Everybody does." (Or the like.)

I have had at least two people say something along these lines. Needless to say, the context was not romantic. One of them was a very obscene land-lord who seemed to constantly be embarrassing himself. I guess I could tell that he was a bit too much for me, so he said I would eventually get to love him, like all his other tenants. Not so. Then there was a colleague, an ultra-nice colleague, so nice that she tended to drive me as well as others quite crazy. This was combined with a cloyingly maternal aura about her. Anyway, she assured me that I would get to love her eventually, but it hasn't happened.

Obviously I say dud.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 26 September 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

You did laugh when you killed both of these people, right?

Oh, and hi. I don't think I've said hi to you yet, welcome. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 September 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, thanks. Actually I am not really new, just trying out a new screen name. (Sorry to disappoint.) I can't decide if it's too obvious.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 26 September 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, I only just now saw it was 'rockist.' Not bad. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 September 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

total utter unable to divine their own faults dud.

maura (maura), Thursday, 26 September 2002 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

they presume a fucking lot and are too familiar. dud...

mike (ro)bott, Thursday, 26 September 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

note my talent for redundancy.

mike (ro)bott, Thursday, 26 September 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

....should be shot.

Surprisingly it sounds like neither of these people were in advertising.

BJ, Friday, 27 September 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

This is where I'm antisocial and such, but if someone says something like that I make a decision not to like them.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 27 September 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned doesn't love me anymore ...

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 27 September 2002 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

ha I have said this to people before. I can be a real neurotic at times!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 27 September 2002 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

People actually say this about themselves???

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 27 September 2002 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned doesn't love me anymore ...

Nonsense, you silly tart. I tuck you into bed every night. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 September 2002 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

This may make me a bad person, but if anyone used a phrase like that towards me. I'd be even more determined not to like them. It's just far to arrogant.

fractal (fractal), Friday, 27 September 2002 07:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I have said it once or twice as a self-deprecating comment.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd laugh. I've never heard anyone say that but it's amazing that they wouldn't have the sense to tell how bad it sounds.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Uttering that sentence in earnest grounds for being on the receiving end of a crotch flamenco.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 September 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

damn I am the only one owning up to making mistakes!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 27 September 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i use "i believe you already love me"

mark s (mark s), Friday, 27 September 2002 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

This sounds disturbingly like someone trying to convince you AND themselves that they're lovable. Total dud.

Saskia, Friday, 27 September 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

if anyone ever says that to me I'll hate forevah and evah!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 27 September 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The day we meet face to face, Julio, I'm going to tell you how lovable I am. FEEL THE HATE!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 September 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the bloody is boiling now man...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 27 September 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Saskia OTM, moreso than Maura I think. The speaker is probably well aware of his own faults, but is continually shocked that people learn to tolerate (hmm probably more often than love) him, regardless.

Now he's come to take this phenomenon for granted = fatal mistake!!

In any case it is a very wounded and insecure (read: loathesome obv!) thing to say and I'm sure I've said before.

Aaron A., Friday, 27 September 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I assume that people will learn to hate me as they get to know me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 September 2002 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I applaud Aaron's candour. I think I'm growing to love him.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

who is rockist scientist then?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It is momus.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

no it isn't.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It is Enrique Iglesias.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

"Promise me you won't fall in love with me"

Mandy, why'd you have to to t-to...? [inconsolable sobbing]

I'm sorry. (graham), Sunday, 29 September 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 September 2002 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

What good films are there at the moment?

Graham (graham), Sunday, 29 September 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Rockist Scientist likes salsa a lot = it should be fairly easy to deduce who it is. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 September 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

still not sure! got an idea though.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

How many scientists do we have here? And he likes rock and there is a Latin American implication. I have my opinion.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

''Rockist Scientist likes salsa a lot = it should be fairly easy to deduce who it is. ;-)''

and arabic music.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

It is Enrique Iglesias.

This is the correct answer.

I really don't mean to be mysterious. It was time to retire my old screen name (at ILX anyway) and adopt one less easily used to identify me. Feeling some belated paranoia about saying too much online. Anyway, I'm more of a regular on ILM.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

The speaker is probably well aware of his own faults, but is continually shocked that people learn to tolerate (hmm probably more often than love) him, regardless.

hmm maybe you've met people who are more clued-in to themselves over the past few years. i unfortunately have not been so lucky.
