Slob or Snob

In his book "Flying to the Moon and Other Strange Places" Michael Collins, the Apollo 11 astronaut unfortuante enough to have had to orbit round while Neil & Buzz explored the surface, details some of the training the astronauts received. As well as all the vomit inducing spinning machines with which we are familiar, the trainee astronauts had to do various psychometric tests. One featured the question:

Are you a slob or a snob?

Answering "neither" wasn't allowed, you had to opt for one or the other. Which would you say and why?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 27 September 2002 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Definitely slob - because I drink beer in my boxer shorts and leave clothes lying around on the floor.

gazza, Friday, 27 September 2002 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Could you choose both?

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 27 September 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

no - one or the other. Collins chose snob.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

If you saw my apartment, you would know the answer. Le sigh...

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 27 September 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

This is silly. They are not mutually exclusive, why can't you be both? Eh?

Emma, Friday, 27 September 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Read the question again Emma.....

Anonymous (Anonymous), Friday, 27 September 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I can read, thanks, however I was pointing out that it's a fucking stupid question.

Emma, Friday, 27 September 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Meow, cat fight!

Plinky (Plinky), Friday, 27 September 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

why's it stupid? it weeds out those who shd not be first into space!! emma you have many many qualities, but suitability for transportation to the sea of tranquility by lunar podule is possibly not one of them

nasa: and here, product of years of the finest scientific brainpower the US can muster, is your spacesuit!!
emma: I'M NOT WEARING THAT!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 27 September 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

it's stupid cos slob/snob are in no way opposed, surely? i suspect i know more ppl who are both/neither than who are just one of these...

toby (tsg20), Friday, 27 September 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it is a false opposition, seemingly chosen mainly for the rhyming possibilities. Didn't they do it with celebrities on T4?

Archel (Archel), Friday, 27 September 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

yes yes but to repeat myself what if NASA only wants ppl who think they ARE opposed?? they are surely tryingt to CUT DOWN the candidate list anyway: it's not like if you said in 1967, ok who's going to go to the moon and you got like five people saying yes (armstrong, aldrin, collin, anthony braxton and twiggy)

haha my favourite saying of my mum's: "I hate space"

mark s (mark s), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Space is a silly place for silly boys anyway. Do they have pubs in space? No! Do they have shops in space? No! Do they have Eastenders in space? No! etc. etc.

Perhaps Mark S has a point.

Emma, Friday, 27 September 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma,

Not having pubs=utter disaster
Not having shops & Eastenders=bonus

Although I am making the assumption that you mean girlie clothes shops and the like, rather than shops wot sell beer 'n' stuff

Plinky (Plinky), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Why WOULD NASA want people who think they are opposed though? If MarkH hadn't ruled this out in the original Q, I would have thought that the 'correct' answer (displaying mental alertness and independent thought) was in fact 'they are not opposed so I cannot and will not answer this question'. Which would mean that Emma, Toby and I would be qualified to go into SPACE yay (I'm sure there is a way to watch Eastenders in space Emma, don't worry).

Archel (Archel), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

NASA: We want to ensure that Emma, Toby and Archel don't even get *near* space
NASA: Get on it
NASA: dum dum dum

mark s (mark s), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! NASA conspiring against me AGAIN! Oh no!

Emma, Friday, 27 September 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

And they would have got away with it too, if it were for meddling mark s.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

AM I COOL OR NOT?:

That picture makes you, officially, The Sexiest Man Alive.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh come on! the two go hand in hand. I'm too fucking lazy to bother slumming it with everyone else ie working, leaving the house etc, voila, both.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 27 September 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

no moon for ronan

mark s (mark s), Friday, 27 September 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I think we can arrange a moon for Ronan...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 September 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Maria (Maria), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you a Backstreet Boy or N'Syncer

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Have any of the people shouting that it's a false dichotomy seen any comedy movie ever from the U.S., 1981-88? Particularly the ones involving (a) ski schools, (b) summer camps, or (c) shoreline bikini-shops?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan has gone from Pissboy to Bumsniffer!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 27 September 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)
