was between gucci mane and bakhtin. had to go to gucci mane because he penned the line "you're a perfect example of what a crab is" which has become the basis of a running joke among some of my friends, ie, "you're a perfect example of what a ____ is."

he was kind of terrible in spring breakers though.

the premise of that tagline -- that it is some kind of novelty for a writer to mix "high" academic theory with "low" popular culture -- is annoying.

the premise of the thread

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Sunday, 30 June 2013 02:15 (twelve years ago)

some of this seemed cribbed from hou hsaio hsiens millenium mambo, one of the most beautiful films of the last decade and inhabitating a vaguely comparable oneiric/elliptical register

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Sunday, 30 June 2013 02:19 (twelve years ago)

so everyone now has to watch mister lonely and trash humpers apparently

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Sunday, 30 June 2013 02:22 (twelve years ago)

did you like spring breakers, nilmar?

yeah i did, and i had assumed the change in subject from gummo and jdb type milieux would be accompanied by a stylistic revision but it was much subtler than that, still quite identifiably a korine film

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Sunday, 30 June 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

i haven't seen the other korine films (they are on my list) but i was happily surprised at how experimental this felt. i like how korine only sort of mocks the idea of spring break as a spirtual event -- he depicts that kind of group hedonism convincingly as an aesthetically mesmerizing, depersonalizing sort of experience, which i thought was spot-on. the scenes with gucci mane were, unfortunately, the worst part of the film.

the movie i liked, though it should have just continued in the kind of loop structure it started with. the conclusion was intense but also i think ruined/disrupted the atmosphere/aesthetic of the film. i read the reynolds piece in S&S and while interesting (and also a bit overcooked/theorised), i preferred just reading amy taubins interview with harmony at the end of it.

anyway, spring breakers is obv destined to play on a double bill with the bling ring.

Then during July 2013 Riff Raff announced he was suing the creators of Spring Breakers for 10 million dollars for sampling his life without his permission or a proper producer credit.[45]

otm, and gets at how wrong it is that some critics keep calling it "satirical" or whatever
