Does anyone else find that they salivate excessively, or are excessively aware of their saliva, or both, when they are called on to speak in public, or make a difficult phone call (etc.)?

I get super-conscious of my hands, where they are, what they're doing, and end up making annoying gestures as a result. Annoying nervous habit, but the more aware of it i am the less i seem to be able to control them.

That's exactly it, once you become hyper aware of these responses to stressful situations, they magnify and become worse. The trick is to try to substitute the usual response with a new suggestion. For example, when you normally would say, oh no, here's a big gobful of saliva now, try heading it off with a mantra or some other thought. It takes a bit of practise, but it does work.

My habit of rising three hundred feet on a pillar of flame whenever forced outdoors has caused adverse comment at least once before now.

I try to brush my hair behind my ears. I have had short hair for over a year, which makes this habit particularly odd
