In March 2010 however, Kermode ruled himself out of the job, stating that his hands were too damn flappy to be shown on live television and would be a hazard to viewers, and instead, Claudia Winkleman was announced as a surprise choice for the presenter's role.[14][15]

Maybe Joan Bakewell was good.

Who hell Iain Johnstone?

The Guardian stated, through her recent hosting of Sky Television's coverage of The Oscars, Winkleman had "proved both a passionate and engaging advocate of cinema", while her husband Kris Thykier is a film producer with credits on several mainstream releases.[17]

It's an honour to follow on from the brilliant Jonathan Ross.

Ross made me look back on Norman with a degree of favour even tho "objectively" Ross was probably a better reviewer/had better taste

always found this product fascinating. Going to the movies? Why not bring along a jar of pickled onions?

xp yeah, I've come to realise how little I value "taste" in a critic

too busy s1ockin' on my 乒乓 (wins), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 21:41 (ten years ago) link

Johnstone took over from Bazza Norman for a year or two (followed by parky? can't quite remember the chronology). He was the daily telegraph to bazza's daily mail iirc - but no better a critic, really. Johnstone was pally w/ John Cleese for a while and co-wrote Fierce Creatures

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 21:42 (ten years ago) link

yeah i cd "read" Norman in that even if he slated a film i'd know whether i'd want to see it or not, whereas with Ross i cdn't really tell if i'd like something just from his opinion

too busy s1ockin' on my 乒乓 (wins), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 21:47 (ten years ago) link

not a ballard, more of a polka punctuated by audience members shooting themselves in the throat

in terms of "unpretentious front-person" terms

It's still a movie show, in ways that "Top Gear" and "A Question of Sport" aren't as much about cars/sport as they used to be.
