The tone of the story seems to imply that it's only worrying because they are students. It does make it more of a story, I have to admit.

There's probably a good article to be written on how, in the YouTube/Flickr/Twitter/Tumblr era, people who get off on public humiliation can actually be humiliated in public, rather than in fetish clubs where people have to fake astonishment at them grinding a poll while dressed like a former chargehand collecting dole.
