Does Dr. Pepper taste like medicine?

Message Bookmarked

Someone told me once that Dr. Pepper is p much only an Americn thing bcz people in other countries think it tastes like medicine. This is a thing that I think about sometimes. What was your initial impression of Dr. Pepper? Someone telling you that it tastes like medicine after the fact and then you being all "oh yeah I can sorta see that" doesn't count; I war to know what conclusion you came to on your own.

I grew up fronking and loving Dr. Pepper and never thought it tasted medicinal until it was pointed out to me. I can kinda taste what people mean but it doesn't bother me at all. Dr. Pepper is great!

Yeah, Dr. Pepper does have a certain cherry cough-syrup similarity. It's no more than my 17th-favourite flavour of soda - although I did adopt the display name "Canadian Club & Dr. Pepper" for a few weeks back in 2011 or so.

Mr. Pibb didn't need to go to med school to learn how to taste awesome and provide high amounts of caffeine. Mr. Pibb learned all that in a two year associates program at a community college. Mr. Pibb has his head on straight, & doesn't need the high stress environment of a medical practice. He cold chills it at various strange restaurants and the occasional independent vending machines. While he doesn't need any ostentatious flair, he still loves his brother, "Pibb XTRA," although they have had squabbles in the past about the exclusion of the letter E.

There are a lot of internet theories about Dr. Pepper's secret ingredients (I had always heard prune juice was one; others deny this.) Here's a significantly different one than the OP:

1. Amaretto 2. Almond 3. Blackberry 4. Black Licorice 5. Carrot 6. Clove 7.Cherry 8. Caramel 9. Cola 10. Ginger 11. Juniper 12. Lemon 13. Molasses 14. Nutmeg 15. Orange 16. Prune 17. Plum 18. Pepper 19. Root Beer 20. Rum 21. Raspberry 22. Tomato 23. Vanilla.

Moxie is a crime. It's fucking liquid marmite.

Dr Pepper (there's no period in the name because that's how the good Dr rolls) is delicious. And now that I live in Dr Pepper country I don't feel as much like a weirdo for loving it like I did in New England.

Mr. Pibb is only available in areas where the local Coca-Cola bottler doesn't distribute Dr. Pepper, or something like that.

I've never seen Moxie sold outside the northeast US. I have no idea if I really like the flavor, but it reminds me of my two pleasant summers in Maine when I was a teenager so I like drinking it the few times i'm somewhere it's sold.

The period (full stop) after "Dr" was discarded for stylistic and legibility reasons in the 1950s. Dr Pepper's logo was redesigned and the text in this new logo was slanted. The period made "Dr." look like "Di:". After some debate, the period was removed for good (it had been used off and on in previous logos).[7]

xpost to Stevie re. Virgil's. i think i ran into the carbonation issue once when i bought Virgil's that hadn't been refrigerated. with ice it usually is good though. i value the complexity of Virgil's, there seems to be more going on there. subtleties.

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 05:26 (ten years ago) link

I mean I buy it on the shelf fron Trader Joe's and put it in my fridge when I get home, but having worked stock in a natural foods store and actually checking in cases of Virgil's I can tell you that they are shipped and almost always stored at room temperature and put in cold cases like when the cold case needs to be refilled.

We also were once mistakenly sent a case of Virgil's Dr. Better and decided to just sell it rather than send it back. It was not better than Dr. Pepper.

I've decided Rocky Mountain Soda Co. Evergreen Elderberry soda is the baseline for medicinal beverages. Really borderline horrible cough syrup taste that seems like it needs to be mixed with alcohol, or maybe gasoline. And ignited.

http://www.southafricanshop.co.uk/assets/thumbnails/products/19317/large/CCJL083C.jpg?1327355572

(this flavour doesn't exist in the UK as far as I know. Found some USian Grape Fanta while image-googling too, no idea if that tastes the same. This one tastes of cough mixture/children's medicine with a disturbing aroma and aftertaste of rotting/fermenting grain which made me check the use by date.)
