keep calm and chive on?

Can anyone explain what this is? I've seen quite a few car window stickers and t-shirts lately with either the #kcco hashtag or "Keep Calm and Chive On". And from what I can tell it's a website that mostly focuses on "funny" memes and half-naked girls. Is this just like a slightly less creepy reddit or something?

Welcome to Probably the Best Little Festival in the World. You are about to experience a global event, a gathering of citizens from over 40 different countries coming together to make new friends, pay it forward, and party like a runaway gravy train on biscuit wheels.

Chive Fest will have its own distinct signature. From the Nostalgia Tent (life-sized game of Operation anybody?), Oversized Ostriches, local foods, blimps, KCCO Beers, fireworks, cats, Chivettes, and enough glowing green you’ll be able to see Chive Fest from space. (More on that soon. The spectacle we have planned will actually be visible from space.)

The fundamental 'chive' concept seems to consist largely of twenty-something female models of a rather restricted ethnic derivation.

Aimless, Monday, 23 June 2014 17:41 (nine years ago) link

I wonder what there is to say about magazines/websites/websites-that-are-sort-of-like-magazines, that have regular ... I suppose you'd call it 'sexual appearances' from people as a keystone feature. Usually semi-clothed rather than outright naked.

cardamon, Monday, 23 June 2014 19:50 (nine years ago) link

What kind of amazes me about the Chive thing is that the one or two times I've ever checked out the site directly, it scans as pretty misogynist and hevily reliant on half-naked women, but all of the people on my FB or Instagram feed that regularly post Chive stuff are female. So there must be something else going on to balance that stuff out?

Bus Sex Teen Busted After Queef Beef (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 23 June 2014 19:52 (nine years ago) link

There's always this weird disconnect between the earnest film reviews or articles or whatever, and the mouthy 'look at this person's body' parts

cardamon, Monday, 23 June 2014 19:53 (nine years ago) link

@ jon, yeah I dunno I'm wondering if now something like Chive can do that and be ... friendly?

cardamon, Monday, 23 June 2014 19:53 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, it's just weird seeing Chive stuff sneak into my periphery. There's a couple of guys I went to high school that regularly post cleavage shots and I wouldn't be surprised to see them post some of the same stuff I saw on Chive's main site. But instead there are a few female friends from college that seem very unlikely to put up with half-naked shots, but they keep posting pictures of themselves with their "Keep Calm and Chive On" mugs so I'm guessing there is some other draw going on.

Bus Sex Teen Busted After Queef Beef (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 23 June 2014 20:00 (nine years ago) link

Another angle on this. I am not a woman so I don't know how much my perceptions are worth here but these women associated with chive do seem to be owning what they're doing. They seem to be people who've turned up to do a job, and who know they have, and who people recognise and don't mess with, a bit like security guards at a night-club.

I've kind of always assumed that there exist a bunch of people, male and female, in America whose job it is to turn up and be sexy without necessarily doing porn. Would you call them glamour models? Promotional models? Might be wide of the mark there.

That seems notably different to Brit Lad Mag style 'get a normal girl off the street and convince her to strip for the lads' aesthetic.

cardamon, Monday, 23 June 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link

this just seems like an extension of college life, like people who want a party hard kinda organization that gives lip service to charity and what not. not unlike the Greek system I guess. Not to be all "I sure hate those frat guys", but it jut seems like that.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 23 June 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

The community aspect is weird because AFAICT there are no forums or online interaction between readers. It's like the Buzzfeed fan base decided to meet up instead of posting to Facebook.

drove past soldier field last night and saw a huge billboard for chive fest. i didn't stop or go in or take pics or anything, but it was loud and looked like it was a few hundred bros + bikini girls standing in the parking lot behind soldier field eating various fried foods. there were huge pics of bill murray in sunglasses and lots of chive on signage. looked pretty boring!

I, too, have wondered what the fuck The Chive is. It seems to be a mainstay of Internet "Real Manliness" (TM), and I can only guess that it's been around longer than some of the "man rules" type blogs that have come around more recently. Combine that with the fact that people who follow this sort of thing are admittedly simple minded and like to follow things with slavish devotion (c.f. sports teams, certain brands of alcohol or fast food) to see how the site manages to maintain popularity for no apparent reason.

So much in one paragraph:

The Chive’s founders, brothers Leo and John Resig, have so effectively branded a certain kind of lifestyle and identity that the membership, from giving to submitting, does most of the work itself. (Leo Resig declined to comment for this article, though he said he was a “big fan” of The Awl.) They live in Venice, California, and the site's name, by the way, is apparently a contraction of Chicago and Venice; the Resigs were born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They have other interests as well: John Resig is a recurring minor character on "True Blood." Their sisters, Emily and Megan, are the editors of the sister site the Berry, which "gives ladies a much needed one-stop destination to peruse hot male celebs, funny photos, daily gossip, fashion, viral videos and adorable animals," and features an "eye candy" section of dudes in the same space where The Chive features its Chivettes. The Berry gets a bit more than 10% of the traffic of The Chive, according to Quantcast. The company's other sub-sites, The Throttle—pictures of hot cars—and The Brigade—tagline "In 'Merica We Trust," with lots of photos of guns, tanks and uniforms—skew even more male, about 80%, and are about the same size as the Berry.
