it's v. sobering how tenacious the myth of "anybody can achieve anything with enough hard work" is in the face of massive counter-evidence

For all I know, the Netherlands might be corrupt in many petty ways, but they have a very nice social safety net and relatively enlightened drug laws. If only they weren't doomed by the coming sea-level rise.

You guys should all consider voting for Norway. We have a lot of oil money, and while I'm not saying we'll pay you for your votes, I'm not *not* saying that either.

Øystein, Saturday, 18 January 2014 10:45 (ten years ago) link

The UK strikes me as being a bit bent rather than genuinely corrupt but seriously lol at it being in this list.

Vote Denmark? We gave you Borgen and The Killing. You owe us!

Frederik B, Saturday, 18 January 2014 11:52 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, well, Norway gave you all the word "Quisling"!

Purveyors of uncorrupt black metal! Or corrupt ... wait, I'm not sure which would be better ... If something is "true" I guess it's uncorrupted, right? Uncorrupted Black Metal for the peop^H^H^H^Hselect few!

Øystein, Saturday, 18 January 2014 14:33 (ten years ago) link

But Danish gave you the words 'ombudsman' and 'køkkenmødding'!

But yeah, you're right, Black Metal. Should have voted for you...

Frederik B, Saturday, 18 January 2014 14:53 (ten years ago) link

Sweden is probably the best country in the world, so voted for that.

Tuomas, Saturday, 18 January 2014 18:36 (ten years ago) link

This is like, our substitute for qualifying for the world cup...

Frederik B, Saturday, 18 January 2014 18:47 (ten years ago) link

Sweden!? U mad, Tuomas.
That's it — I'm voting Denmark in the hope that between me and Frederik, Sweden will lose like a great big loser country full of losers who lose at everything.

Unless ...
Oh, I see. Frederik paid you off in disgusting black bread and sausage to say that, knowing it would make me vote Denmark, huh? No deal, you corrupt fiends!

Øystein, Saturday, 18 January 2014 18:54 (ten years ago) link

After giving my props to Netherlands upthread, I would also like to point out that Canada has vast reaches of unspoiled 'virgin' territory and a somewhat endearing tradition of muddling along politically.

It is the sort of country that would reject the idea of building a $50 billion agency to snarf up all the email and phone conversations of the entire world, on the grounds that it is terribly expensive and really not very polite when you think about it. Instead, they would vote to knit the world a very large woolen scarf, then wrangle for a long time about what color of yarn to use. That's not exactly an incorruptible government, but it has much the same effect in the long run.

IN YOUR FACE, SWEDEN!

Frederik B, Sunday, 19 January 2014 01:04 (ten years ago) link

Ah, I missed voting, but I visited 8 out of those 18 last year and I gotta give it up for Sweden for seeming least corrupt. So many different political beliefs co-exist there, so it wins in my book for tolerating and synthesizing opposing views with some civility, being most progressive, and having maybe slightly less racism than similar places. I like Finland more for its Internet culture, tho.

Huh, Iceland I can see. They seemed to handle their bankers alright. (well, after everything went to seed...)
Finland I don't really know anything about, but I just sorta assume it's all good ol' boys making dubious deals in the saunas.
