lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:40 (ten years ago) link

probly wd vote for the first Despicable Me but i haven't engaged with most of these

Emilia Fabbo (Noodle Vague), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:41 (ten years ago) link

Call of Duty: Ghosts
Despicable Me 2
Monsters University
Battlefield 4
Man of Steel
Despicable Me
Iron Man 3
Taken 2

^^^never heard of these? man of steel rings a vague bell but it's such a generic fucking title for...anything. (action film?)

life of pi as in the book that's over a decade old???

obv i have heard of star trek but i don't know what this particular iteration is

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:43 (ten years ago) link

Emeli Sande sold 2m albums?! It's almost like our nation is proud to be dull

VENIET IMBER (imago), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:43 (ten years ago) link

This is an execrable list, obv, nothing redeems

VENIET IMBER (imago), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:44 (ten years ago) link

les mis, fifa or despicable me prob p dece versions of what they should have been, the rest either arent or ive had no experience/interest

i kid because i glove (darraghmac), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:45 (ten years ago) link

Haven't watched/played/listened to any of these except Django Unchained. It was terrible.

pandemic, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:45 (ten years ago) link

I'm not a gamer so I have no idea about those, but I've seen or heard 10 of these and I say it's Iron Man 3 by a fucking mile.

tench and pike, scaup and snipe (NickB), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:45 (ten years ago) link

FIFA 14 I guess comes closest to having a positive purpose, but I hate football/videogame interfaces nowadays so idk

VENIET IMBER (imago), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:47 (ten years ago) link

Fifa 14 is a fun game, I play it a lot. Enjoyed Django Unchained and Life of Pi.

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:47 (ten years ago) link

and yeah i've heard of nine but have actually consumed zero apart from the first 10 minutes of skyfall which was boring

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:48 (ten years ago) link

Lex, have you really never heard of Grand Theft Auto 5?? Not necessarily played it but at least know what it is. If so I'll have little time for you chastising Dog Latin when he claims not to have heard whatever ubiquitous #1 smash record that turns up on the ILX Tracks poll.

pandemic, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:48 (ten years ago) link

is it a computer game? name rings a faint faint bell but i've really no idea what it is or anything

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:50 (ten years ago) link

Yah it's a computer game that there's a moral panic over every time a new version is released.

pandemic, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:52 (ten years ago) link

ok. i've literally never played or even handled a computer game in my life

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:54 (ten years ago) link

The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey - nein danke
Call of Duty: Ghosts - online shooters nein danke
Les Miserables - i'd probly like this but it seems a bit up itself
Despicable Me 2 - ugh sequels
Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn Pt 2 - i am not the target market tbf
Now That's What I Call Music 86 - fair enough but you know it'll be half rub
Now That's What I Call Music 85 - fair enough but etc

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - just give it up you boring gits

Emilia Fabbo (Noodle Vague), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:57 (ten years ago) link

Now That's What I Call Music 86 - fair enough but you know it'll be half rub

It's actually 80% rubbish afaict which is kinda sad in such a good year for pop music.

tench and pike, scaup and snipe (NickB), Monday, 6 January 2014 14:02 (ten years ago) link

the ongoing success of the now compilations seemed charmingly quaint at first but by now it just elicits an eyeroll of vague contempt because 2014

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 14:02 (ten years ago) link

i got it for our Han for Christmas but i haven't even looked at the track list. Now has been pretty rub for years independent of what's happening in the actual charts

Emilia Fabbo (Noodle Vague), Monday, 6 January 2014 14:03 (ten years ago) link

I have experienced a grand total of 2; Skyfall, which I enjoyed a little, and Iron Man 3, which I enjoyed quite a bit. That's all.

it's weird b/c like every other pop fan my age i have v fond memories of it as a formative series in my childhood but i always disliked a good third of it and i remember how annoying it would be forwarding through it every time; the ability to excise that from the music i choose to own is basically the dream

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 14:07 (ten years ago) link

they do tend to put all the indie crap in one easily skippable block

Emilia Fabbo (Noodle Vague), Monday, 6 January 2014 14:10 (ten years ago) link

Ticking the box to remove ilm from sna is imo an ilx equivalent

i kid because i glove (darraghmac), Monday, 6 January 2014 14:11 (ten years ago) link

i imagine killfiling darragh is the ilx equivalent

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 14:13 (ten years ago) link

Probably, probably

they do tend to put all the indie crap in one easily skippable block

If you have Now 86, this is otherwise known as the Arctic Monkeys song

tench and pike, scaup and snipe (NickB), Monday, 6 January 2014 14:15 (ten years ago) link

Was gonna say if i thought there'd be 30% indie crap on it id take a look tbh

i kid because i glove (darraghmac), Monday, 6 January 2014 14:16 (ten years ago) link

i'm not saying all indie = crap, just the kind of indie crap they put on Now comps

life of pi as in the book that's over a decade old???

It doesn't take a genius to think, maybe, just maybe, they might have made a film out of this incredibly successful decade-old book.

emil.y, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:04 (ten years ago) link

Or a videogame

VENIET IMBER (imago), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:05 (ten years ago) link

Raspberry Life of Pi

emil.y, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:06 (ten years ago) link

But yeah, anyway, what a list of shite.

emil.y, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:07 (ten years ago) link

i'm genuinely envious of Lex's apparent ability to filter out cultural phenomena he is not interested in

soref, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:07 (ten years ago) link

Or another book. I wonder - has anyone ever 'covered' a novel?

VENIET IMBER (imago), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:08 (ten years ago) link

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:11 (ten years ago) link

On fone so will check later. Merdeyeux feel free but I warn you, shit's 100k and not halfway done

VENIET IMBER (imago), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:14 (ten years ago) link

I mean, also a 'cover version' of a novel could be pretty easily expanded - I guess imagined sequels/prequels/novels from a different perspective ('Wide Sargasso Sea' types) would be more like answer songs, but things like graphic novelisation would definitely fit as covers.

emil.y, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:14 (ten years ago) link

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and its ilk are basically cover versions I guess

Number None, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:15 (ten years ago) link

at the less conceptually sophisticated end, there are 'modern versions' of things - Austen the big one, so for instance all of the novels coming soon

woof, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:19 (ten years ago) link

that was xp, i meant less conc. sophis. than Borges, not P&P&Z

woof, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:20 (ten years ago) link

I don't play video games at all, but I have played GTAV and like the others it's hilarious fun.

Oh and I've seen Life of Pi - at the cinema. Lovely 3D, the plot maybe less so.

An embarrassing doorman and garbage man (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:25 (ten years ago) link

trying to think if there's a literary equivalent to the slowed-down acoustic/indie cover of a lively chartpop tune.

woof, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:29 (ten years ago) link

I'm kind of pleased the Now! albums are still going. Now 17 was the first bit of music I ever bought with my own money (think I was 9) and I still have it. Is it still Side 1: AOR/Adult Pop/Mega hits, Side 2: Indie/Rock, Side 3: Dance/Pop/Rap, Side 4: Novelty songs/Everything else?

An embarrassing doorman and garbage man (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:31 (ten years ago) link

given that i don't think it's released on vinyl or cassette now, not exactly

Emilia Fabbo (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:36 (ten years ago) link

but things that are similar are still chunked together i think

Emilia Fabbo (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:37 (ten years ago) link

oh yeah.

Interesting that among the films you've got a Bond film, and then mainly comic book adaptations and then a Tarantino – not so many big action/thriller/horror films anymore? Altho I guess the comic book adaptations cover for that

cardamon, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 04:41 (ten years ago) link

I wd have voted for the Now compilations, I get about every other one of them, like the radio in greasy spoon cafes you're in it with everyone else, regardless of whether I particularly like the music there's a warmth in that communal listening

Got the feeling quite a lot of that dance pop interzone UKG Duke Dumont 'vibe' made it on to the album in this case which can only be good

Fifa 14 is a fun game, I play it a lot. Enjoyed Django Unchained and Life of Pi.

sorry for the revive, but was wondering - did you ever play online? is it me, or has the AI defense gotten to be terrible? I used to play the FIFA games on prior generation systems and while I often had trouble scoring, I never had this much trouble defending.

against players who play actual soccer, I'm good, as I mark well and defend headers well and double team frequently so I force lots of turnovers. I've noticed though most of the dickfingers who play online do nothing but launch through balls and downfield crosses all game on the off-chance that one out of ten will succeed, and when they do, even though I'm marking him from one side, the AI defenders just let the guy blow past. if he crosses it into the box before I can switch players, my AI defender doesn't even attempt to stop the header or volley.

It's infuriating. and it doesn't happen when I play the computer - only when I play other people.
