ILX Compilation v6: FREESTYLER - rock your microphone

Hello.... let's do one!
(previous discussions here
ILX Compilation v4: Tiny Music (Deadline/Submissions/etc!!))

This time round there is no restrictions, no theme, no nuttin', freestylin'

  • You can submit any song you like, please to send to ilxfreesty✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧. I'd highly suggest either an uncompressed WAV or AIFF, You can also send a high-bitrate MP3 if you'd like, I guess (like 256+). If there's a file size problem drop a note I'm sure we can sort it out somehow.
  • Ideally please keep to one song per ilxor
  • I am going to set the deadline of Sunday, March 2nd, giving you slightly less than two months. It's the end of a weekend so all you last-minute folk can still throw something together, it can also coincide if you're doing FAWM I suppose http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_Album_Writing_Month ??

Are FLAC format files OK?

Yes! That whole bit was copied from the ILX compilation v4 thread but I can't see why not. It's likely to end up on soundcloud which would accept any of those formats

Hmm, not sure. I'd consider a collaboration, maybe, but I have no real ideas at the moment - I actually prefer working to constraints. /childofdogme

― sarahell, Tuesday, January 7, 2014 9:56 PM (Yesterday)

Okay, I'm up for this. Bear in mind I'm not very good at anything. Might use it as an excuse to try to make up one of my Maplin 'horrible screechy noise' kits (this kind of thing), though I'm a bit worried about trying to solder with a cat in the house.

the only thing you can use are samples from a single tv episode

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 00:50 (ten years ago) link

as long as i can slather them in reverb and delay i'm okay with that.

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 00:54 (ten years ago) link

it would be fun(ny) if the constraint was your song had to be about/inspired by an ilx thread, and that would be the title.

Have managed to hear about half of this so far. Great stuff! Well done all!

tom d - who is hans krankl?

The track was originally called "Franz Klammer", and so tied in with the Winter Olympics, but in a fit of pique I suggested ken rename it "Hans Krankl" as the release date crept ever closer to the start of the (football) World Cup and the Winter Olympics 2014 became a distant memory. Hans Krankl being the most famous Austrian footballer of the 70s (as Klammer was the most famous Austrian downhill skier of the 70s). I wish I hadn't now as "Franz Klammer" is more appropriate and a better title!

A frenzied geologist (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 11:09 (ten years ago) link

it totally sounds like the winter olympics! i really liked it.

funch dressing (La Lechera), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 12:44 (ten years ago) link

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 08:37 (ten years ago) link

They did reggae for sure. That track is totally 1979/80... which is a major compliment in my book.

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 10 May 2014 17:41 (ten years ago) link

Yeah it's a good track. How come you had it sitting around for twenty years? What was it initially?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 10 May 2014 17:59 (ten years ago) link

I just made demos on a four-track in the 90s with my guitar, a second hand drum machine and a mate's bass if I could borrow it. They weren't really for anything, there wasn't ever going to be a group or a live performance or anything. That track is a reworking of something from about 1994, done in about 2000 or 2001 when I was in Italy (so without access to a bass). I think the master cassette was getting very near the end when I recorded it, which has made it sound a bit wobbly, but it's just about get-away-able-with.

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 10 May 2014 18:07 (ten years ago) link

that's awesome! i liked the song a lot too.

funch dressing (La Lechera), Saturday, 10 May 2014 18:09 (ten years ago) link

I haven't done anything since 2001/02. I bought a Focusrite interface thing* a while back which came with Ableton Live Lite, with the intention of trying to start recording things again. I even bought a keyboard with drum pad things on. But there never seems to be enough time to learn how anything works or how to play it.

*clearly I know nothing about the technicalities
