good one

the late great, Monday, 20 April 2015 06:21 (eight years ago) link

For some reason I started looking at getting a old school reissue board in the last week - like 9.5" x 32", discernible nose and tail, 60mm wheels, something I can push around on without getting into longboard territory - and then out of nowhere my college roommate who I haven't seen in 4 years texted that he was going to be in town and had stated skating again and we should meet up at the skate park.

I still have my last board which I remember setting up in 1996 and has mostly been used to move heavy objects since I started my first "real" job in July of 1997. He's 41 and I'm 40 and we spent two hours skating and laughing about how winded we were from simple things. I was stoked that I ollied onto a 5" high curb and didn't fall, I landed a couple of (stationary) kickflips, etc. Now I can barely walk.

He told me about this video which got me way more excited than a lot of the ones above due to feeling much more attainable:

If it's any consolation, I've routinely gone through what your second paragraph throughout my mid 20s.

This past march I had my most decisive of "i am decisively going to start skating again" moments. I'd say after maybe the first three sessions I was back to a comfortable state. But then I went away for a month, but I come home tomorrow and hope I don't get lazy and stop.

Having finally visited skate-spot world capital Barcelona in this time, I am def psyched to get out skating and subsequently be disappointed by personal inadequacy very soon!

i'm 28, am i too old to learn to sk8 for the first time?

Ric Flairy (clouds), Friday, 22 May 2015 14:24 (eight years ago) link

(lived on dirt road until 15; too embarrassed to try learning after that)

Ric Flairy (clouds), Friday, 22 May 2015 14:27 (eight years ago) link

No way you could totally learn to skate at 28. You'll be great. Don't wait!

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Friday, 22 May 2015 14:51 (eight years ago) link

Sorry got carried away, but seriously, I think you could pick it up quickly.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Friday, 22 May 2015 14:51 (eight years ago) link

oh yeah i don't think there's an age cutoff to learn any skill, mostly just wanted to spur conversation :3

Ric Flairy (clouds), Friday, 22 May 2015 15:08 (eight years ago) link

I was surprised to learn a few years ago when I considered taking skating back up that the cost of entry is still pretty much the same. Decks and trucks and wheels have barely risen in price since I was a teenager.

(I ended up ruling it out because my body is a piece of shit now.)

never too old clouds! go for it!
skaters have the best clothes too imo

i like watching sk8ers just casually skating down the road on their way to wherever - that languid dip-down and pushhhhh. you can clock a good skater from a mile away just by the way they cruise. and even in a group, usually there's one or two who have it down and are super cruisey & somehow just get the natural physics & others who are stiff & push-push-push in a way that makes you tired watching all the effort

I was surprised by this as well - completes were perpetually like $100-110 and are maybe $120 or so now. Though there does seem to be a nostalgia/you-probably-have-a-real-job-now tax on reissue old school decks like the Santa Cruz Tom Knox cop beater I've been drooling over.

I saw this the other day and realized at the peak of me skating I could have totally heelfliped a set of three stairs and became simultaneously stoked and depressed that an 8 year old girl in a fairy costume was doing the same.

She didn't do a backfoot heelflip though. If nothing else she just kicked out a beat late. Still a normal heelflip otherwise.

So cool! Reminds me a friend back in the 80s who had a pink Mullen deck.

(can't believe I found an image of one this time around. I've done a lot of image searches for pink Mullen decks that turned up nada. I almost didn't believe my own memory. )

A small victory for people power (for those who don't know, the skaters mounted a successful campaign against getting booted out in favour of commercial outlets).
