i saw hannibal buress the other night and he killllled. much more dynamic than i expected, and so funny from beginning to end, where the end was his rap song played 4x (once acapella) accompanied by ballerinas. excellent use of his dj too (who i once played a show with in chicago).

one month passes...

Anyone heard/watched the new Patton Oswalt? He was my favourite comedian working about 5 or so years ago, but I haven't found his last couple as repayable as Feelin' Kinda Patton or Werewolves and Lollipops. Wondering if its worth the iTunes purchase...

it's on spotify. i haven't heard it yet tho.

have you seen his stand up before? idk if i should expect a bunch of characters a la the podcast pilot project or something else entirely

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Friday, 11 April 2014 18:36 (ten years ago) link

I have no idea what he's going to do.

Stephen King's Threaderstarter (kingfish), Friday, 11 April 2014 18:51 (ten years ago) link

(at least historically) He always / only does characters for stand-up.

I think the Review bits of the live show were a good way just to have Comedy Central help underwrite the tour in the guise of a promo thing.

I was watching an old episode of @midnight, from last week or the week before, featuring Jim Jeffries. I knew that I would not like him when I started watching the show, and I continued to not-like him throughout the show. If there was a way to mace someone through the tv, he would be one of my first choices.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 April 2014 04:08 (ten years ago) link

but I have found that by and large that show has made me like a lot more comedians that I knew the names of but had never seen before. Like Morgan Murphy! She's awesome...and holy shit is she ever tall

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 April 2014 04:09 (ten years ago) link

I guess it's a few years old now but Maron's "This Has To Be Funny" is great, much more enjoyable than I expected his standup to be.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 17 April 2014 04:15 (ten years ago) link

You should listen to Not Sold Out. It's from 2002, when he was in a super self-hating place, but it's his funniest album.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 April 2014 05:41 (ten years ago) link

I would love to see Hannibal live, the ballerina closer sounds like a gas

He's done runs at the last few Edinburgh Fringe festivals, where he does really well with audiences. He opened his last show there by going "I've noticed a lot of comics here are British people making jokes about Scotland, but I'm not going to play that regional rivalry stuff because I hate both of your countries equally"

Walter Galt, Thursday, 17 April 2014 10:56 (ten years ago) link

lol

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:14 (ten years ago) link

@midnight is better most of you might think, the format of 3 comedians trashing on internet stuff kinda feels like The Burn + Tosh.0 but it's a lot less mean-spirited than either of those, a lot of the humor is clever, and the comedians don't often just go for shock value. Plus Ronald Funches is on it which makes it A+ in my book; havent had much time to watch lately but I'll save any episode he's on

frogbs, Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:18 (ten years ago) link

plus they'll do things like bring back the cast of the Upright Citizens Brigade or The State for an episode

frogbs, Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:18 (ten years ago) link

As much as I enjoy puns, a half hour of hashtag games does not appeal to me at all. Also I don't like Hardwick in host mode.

polyphonic, Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:20 (ten years ago) link

I tried watching it last week (Doug Benson was on, I remember) and it seemed terrible. Does Hardwick not think he has a microphone? Why does he shout all the time?

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:23 (ten years ago) link

he's naturally excitable i guess

yeah the ron funches episodes are my favorite. also kurt braunholer is great on it.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:36 (ten years ago) link

Hardwicke is the worst - one of his standup bits came on Sirius/XM and it was just five minutes of "I'm a nerd, I hate sports!" and "Sports are so confusing, make Star Wars references so that I, a nerd, can understand them!" Is it 1984?

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:38 (ten years ago) link

I agree with everyone's Hardwick misgivings, but I do enjoy @Midnight a lot. The State one was great.

Assholes on Boats: A Billy Zane Retrospective (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:39 (ten years ago) link

idk i enjoy him in host mode, esp on @midnight , I think it's the best use of his skills imo

his standup can be funny, but he's still not comfortable getting too personal so alot of it is still nerdoms which I can take or leave

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:39 (ten years ago) link

one of his standup bits came on Sirius/XM and it was just five minutes of "I'm a nerd, I hate sports!" and "Sports are so confusing, make Star Wars references so that I, a nerd, can understand them!"

There was actually a Nerdist episode a few weeks ago where they brought in a guy from Grantland to help Hardwick understand sports, and his angle of entry was nerding out on stats.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:41 (ten years ago) link

I think it's the best use of his skills imo

I like him best in conversation on the podcast, especially with the other dudes. His standup stinks.

polyphonic, Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:43 (ten years ago) link

I think my main exposure to Hardwick was through the sound blob in the later Best Show on WFMU episodes.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:47 (ten years ago) link

I don't mind Hardwick on his podcast but when I saw him on tv he was yelling so much I thought he was a fill-in host at first, since his voice sounded nothing like it does on the Nerdist.

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 17 April 2014 21:08 (ten years ago) link

The only reason America knows Hardwick anyway is because he started out as a host, so he kinda knows what he's doing.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 April 2014 21:10 (ten years ago) link

can't follow that logic

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 17 April 2014 21:13 (ten years ago) link

I'm saying he parlayed his host gig on Singled Out into another twenty years of fame (and counting), so it's kind of old hat to him at this point. He's nobody's fill-in.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 April 2014 21:15 (ten years ago) link

I think Hardwick seems like a deceptively normal guy until he takes a left turn way into nerdland and you realize he's full-on dorky.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 April 2014 21:17 (ten years ago) link

By "I thought he was a fill-in host" I meant that having listened to the Nerdist but never seen Hardwick on tv, I turned on his show and heard a dude who sounded nothing like him shouting at me and thought "Oh, maybe Hardwick is off tonight. Who's this guy?"

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 17 April 2014 21:19 (ten years ago) link

i saw Hannibal a week or two before his new special came out, he killlled. definitely the best comedy show i've been this year, and for the first time i've actually been going to see a lot of comedy (let's see, al madrigal, maria bamford, bobcat goldthwait, ms pat, etc).

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 17 April 2014 21:20 (ten years ago) link

The only reason America knows Hardwick anyway is because he started out as a host, so he kinda knows what he's doing.

There are countless examples of people who started as hosts who I do not enjoy as hosts.

watched like half of the new Lucas Bros special. Something about their schtick doesn't quite work - they don't go all-in on the possibilities of the twin-comedy-duo premise, but then their being twins distracts from the more pedestrian material. I found myself constantly thinking about how they trade lines and switch off, even when it had nothing to do with the content of the jokes, and then wondering if it would be funnier if I were just watching one guy do the same material instead of two guys interrupting each other and making interjections (so many "uh huh", "yup", "right" etc.) It wasn't bad and I did laugh at a bunch of the jokes tho, but it was a weird viewing experience.

tried to watch that Hasan Minaj (sp?) special and it was dire, gave up after about 15 minutes. same with the second Chappelle (didn't watch the first one, I thought a fried had told me the second was much better but maybe I got that backwards).

new Sarah Silverman is terrific though.

evol j, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 17:26 (six years ago) link

omg that Minaj thing was *awful* - and the audience was going absolutely insane for him, idgi. all the staging with the projections (including what appeared to be actual people's facebook pages!? wtf), the lazy endless set-ups. ugh

agree that Sarah's new one was great. I did notice that she has, at this point, completely abandoned racial material, which is interesting.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 17:35 (six years ago) link

Rory Scovel one was like a strange hybrid of Steve Martin's more conceptual shit and Louie CK, was great to see something where I really wasn't sure where he was gonna go/couldn't predict how the jokes were going to be structured

Beyond the vile dog crucifixion bit, the new Sarah Silverman special is pretty damn funny. The story about her father at camp had me laughing hard enough to risk passing out.

I've been checking out The Standups on netflix--some good mixed with some bad.

I'd rank the ones I've seen like this:

Dean Cole-- funny enough to make the "I didn't prepare for this special" schtick work

Fortune Feinstein - Hard not to root for her onstage, some really big laughs and an infectious, positive personality

Nate Bargatze-- more smile-inducing than laugh-out-loud funny--but that made the big laughs hit harder in some ways.

Nikki Glaser - very witty, but in predictable ways. I don't want to compare every lady comic who talks about sex to Amy Schumer, but her sex jokes hit the same sorts of beats.

I'm looking forward to watching the Dan Soder half-hour, haven't heard of Beth Stelling

just chanced across the new Ryan Hamilton thing after a typical 'tt and i give all the stand-ups ten minutes to impress us and they all fail after 90 seconds' session

and hey

it's really good

he's a lovely man too, a complete anachronism in style while also completely aware of the moment. maybe there's something to this 'clean comedy' lark. did i mention that the 90-second dross was all edgy? and then there was a bo burnham thing that was funny enough for 25 minutes but then became gross and unwatchable when it turned out he wasn't actually gay
