Best Show To Appear On NBC's Must-See TV Thursday For Two Years Or Less

The phrase came out the '93-'94 season - also the first time Seinfeld aired all-year - so I'm going from there to the last season of Friends (sorry, Dear John fans). Some of these shows went on to last a few more seasons on other nights. Some did not.

If you haven't seen the page showing the rise and fall of NBC Thursdays in general (with links to individual show pages if you're curious): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Must_See_TV

I remember almost all of these because I didn't have cable at the time and could really only pick up the local NBC affiliate. Hard to pick a winner, but I think it might be Caroline in the City.

oh man, the first half of this list brings back the memories. the boston common guy annoyed the living hell out of me, and the mere thought of his face and the things that he said makes my stomach tense up and my fingers lose their gripping power

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 14:34 (ten years ago) link

i see that he celebrated the universal acclaim for boston common by appearing as Paul the Hotel Barber in The Rock

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 14:37 (ten years ago) link

I guess you've never seen Yes, Dear? It ran for an eternity on CBS and persists on TBS.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 14:38 (ten years ago) link

Never saw any of these; I'll go with the one George Segal was on.

just shoot me was pretty decent. good cast. scored some laughs. that's about as much enthusiasm as I can muster up for any of these shows.

some of these shows feel like ringers - mad about you a real hit that accorded a bizarre measure of respect at the time, just shoot me (which i'm surprised to see was only on thursdays for like two years apparently), caroline & the city, suddenly susan plausibly could be called hit shows whose continued existence wasn't dependant entirely on being on thursdays. so, somewhat arbitrarily, i'm limiting myself to the shows that were shockingly highly rated shows on launch on thursdays the first year and then got moved to another night the second year, saw their ratings plummet, and got quickly canceled. that plus the shows that couldn't even manage that. the shows they used to (maybe still do?) show on weekday mornings on usa network. of these the single guy is the quintessential 'we can throw any garbage on between friends and seinfeld and you suckers will lap it up' show but i'm voting for boston common just cuz i have a crush on traylor howard. surprised 'working' wasn't one of these, i guess it was on another night. lol at remembering how hard they tried to turn the naked truth into a hit, rework after rework, it was the up all night of its day. sad lol at seeing the first of many failed christina applegate vehicles up there. grant her this, at least she's not doing a tvland show. why they didn't put newsradio on thursdays still a mystery and an outrage.

mad about you really was a mystifyingly big deal at the time. what I also remember was it was an incredibly square show and any laughs it had probably came from john pankow.

That's one of the worst tv shows to ever hit the airwaves.

Had a crush on Lea Thompson circa Caroline, so voting that.

I've never seen Yes, Dear itself but I feel like I saw enough commercials for it that I can hear the lead's terrible voice saying "yes, dear."

the only one of these that I regularly watched was Just Shoot Me

(don't look at me like that)

boston common was based on the college i went to and we used to heavily reference it when giving tours of the campus circa 2000-2001 ("notable alumni include jay leno...henry winkler...and anthony clark!")

i was about to say "i can't imagine the type of asshole whose college choice is influenced by anthony clark going there," but i can totally imagine it - i was surrounded by them for four years

Whenever Friends would come up in conversation, a friend of mine liked to joke at the time that "I don't like Friends, but I really like Jessie." Was the latter an obvious ripoff of the former or something?

Working just missed the cutoff periodwise iirc. And I kept the qualifying hits because I love the idea of someone seeing Just Shoot Me or mad about you on a best of poll and voting for it

da croupier, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 15:40 (ten years ago) link

Wait I'm thinking of Coupling. Yeah Working must have been on another night

Wednesdays after the third rock from the sun it seems. Just found the Wikipedia pages for every years prime-time lineup. Sweet mama Jesus.

Kevin nealon and Richard Lewis are comedy writers "Hiller And Diller", by Lowell ganz and babaloo mandel, initially after home improvement, once after Sabrina the teenage witch, last four episodes unaired but plot descriptions on the show page.

Geez, and you still had to leave out a few shows to keep within the poll limits!

No I didnt

Was "Jessie" the Christina Applegate one? If so, that.

Naked Truth totally stunk in its conversion from ABC to NBC

Don't worry falling into a wormhole of forgotten programming from every night now - a proto Big Bang theory in 1995 called dweebs with Peter scholari, Corey Feldman, Stephen tobolowsky and Farrah forke from wings, aired before Bonnie and Picket Fences...must close...wikipedia

I voted for Veronica's Closet, but I've just gone to youtube and watched an episode for the first time in about 15 years and it's awful, I'd like to change my vote to Mad About You please

soref, Thursday, 10 April 2014 00:37 (ten years ago) link

How'd I miss this poll. I swear I must have seen eps of at least 3/4 of these. Probably would have gone w/Mad About You cause every once in a while I see it on a nostalgia channel and it holds up surprisingly well.
