First Michael Jackson, now Gazza. Will the madness never end?:

http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,1563,806748,00.html

I don't know if anyone here is interested or not. I just wanted to try out the automatic blue writing. In other news, Peter Reid has been sacked.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Lee Sharpe was bad enough. It is all part of Uri Gellar's voodoo.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, this would make the perfect birthday gift for Tim Hopkins. It'll never come off though. This is just Exeter City - the biggest windbag in the third division.

I'd love to see Gazza's team talks though.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a ridiculous circus, although for what it's worth I don't suppose for a moment PG will be our new manager / coach. And it's not my birthday, though it was our much-admired ex-manager's birthday yesterday. He's 37.

Pete's right, there's lots of noise around the club at the moment and it's mostly annoying or embarrassing.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Was it a shock then Tim, when you found out that JC got the chop on saturday evening? How soon did you find out?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I found out on Sunday, from the internet, because I was out all day on Saturday. There have been rumours that he's been on the way for weeks, and he got the vote of confidence last week, so no, it wasn't a shock.

People have been saying that the current owners of the club have been wanting to bring in 'their own man' since they took over in the summer. The whole thing just feels very grim at present: for all the noise and smoke it seems to me the club are most likely spending above their means. We've done this before and very, very nearly went out of business.

I do feel sorry for John Cornforth: he picked up a very demoralised squad who looked dead certs for relegation this time last year, and took us to a (relatively) respectable mid-table fininsh. Most City fans agree that the players he's brought in are the best squad we've had for a long time, and he's been fired before they've had a chance to bed down. I think he deserved better, and he won't be the first young manager to leave Exeter after a year or so and go on to bigger things.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:28 (twenty-three years ago)

The story broke on the 5.05 show on talksport after 6ish.

Before JC, did not Noel Blake bring a nearly whole new team? (and ditched a large number too) was that summer 2000? not summer 2001?

How long was Noel Blake manager?

How is Scott Hiley doing at Exeter?

I think Gazza would be a big mistake he knows nothing about the 3rd division, and he declined Darlo's offer to play for them in the summer - as Gazza thought he could get a better offer than be involved in the basement division.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The team Blake inherited was really quite weak, the product of several years of very, very tight times. He got rid of most of them in the summer of 2000 and replaced them with slightly better players, but it (regrettably)never really happened for Noel. He was manager for 18 months or so.

Scott Hiley is a hero at City, having been a key member of our 1990 D4 Championship side. He's doing fine, although he's obviously rather less pacy than he was last time we saw him in a City shirt.

I agree with you about PG.

We're a convincing case for stability in football clubs at present.

one year passes...
Exeter City to play Brazil:

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 8 January 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping they'd come here, and we could have had a Exeketer vs Brizzol mega-FAP. Sort of.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it's just like watching brazil every week any way (possibly). all the lads i was talking to on saturday were mad keen to go to support the team.

hello, my name is carsmile and i have been to SIX exeter games already this season (and watched two on the telly), help me someone please...

also they're not "languishing" in the conference, they're pushing for a play-off (12 point deduction notwithstanding), which considering the madness surrounding the club this season is pretty remarkable i'd say.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

CarsmileSteve, where are you from?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Why should THAT matter, fascist.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve is a Ronin football fan, he wanders the land, looking for a team to support ;o)

chris (chris), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i was born in Darlington, raised near Durham and have lived in Cheltenham, Oxford and now London, who else would i support?

(or to put it another way, tim hopkins is a very persuasive man...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I was contemplating a Devon ILX FAP, innit.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i haven't made it to the home of football (ie st james' park) yet, but it's a possibility before the end of the season...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

or to put it another way still, mrs carsmile is an arsenal fan and anything must be better than that?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Supporting a team on the basis of being dragged by a mate and falling in love with them >>> proxy for falling in love with mate = carsmile and hopkins, sitting in a tree.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Whereas eleven strong, sinewy men in yellow and blue turned you, Dave.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone loves Tim.

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuckin a. I had no mates at the wombles to sublimate my desires into. I just felt the wuv.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry and Dave, sitting in a tree...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327056/

Even more bizarro. Dave Boyle & Sean Devine in the same film.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy Fuckola

Am very pleased that Tim Robbins played me though. Is it any good?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It is very disconcerting when they constantly refer to him as Dave Boyle all the way through the film. Its okay, Robbins probably over acts a bit as the slightly disturbed adult who was molested as a child. He does get the tell tale Dave Boyle slightly dim stammer right.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

He's got me down to a T

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

also, i understand you've had several teams down the years, boyler you old tart ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That article wot I wrote for FT was nought more or less than self-justification.
