This Year's Festivals

Anyone going to any this year? The line-ups for the two biggies (V2001 and Reading) don't look too hot to me, so I'll probably go to the Essential festival in *gasp* Hackney. What's everyone else up to?

After having seen the snoozefest that is that line for T In The Park, I think the line-up for wierdyfest Le Weekend, in Stirling this weekend, (!!!) actually starts to look inviting!!!

Either that, or I may start my own festival called "Old Fart's Bloody Racket In A Field" or something...

Harumph!!!!

Old Fart!!!!

Hmmm, does the Tolpuddle rally count?

Hopefully the land will be in progressive hands by mid-July, which will give me even more reason to enjoy it.

I'd love to go the San Francisco Pop Fest. Just to go travelling, and stuff like that, and meeting people etc. I'm sort of thinking of going to the Emmaboda festival in Sweden, I think it's in August, and I would travel there by train. If they were having Terrastock in London I'd go, I'll probably only go to the Ealing Jazz festival. oh well. Maybe, I could put on my own festival one year.

I don't understand what you mean. There are still festivals after Camber Sands has passed?

eleven years pass...

Hello! The fields are beckoning me. What are some good festivals this year? Preferably something fun, not too expensive, decent lineup that will appeal to normal people (as well as music dorks like me), preferably UK or Europe at a stretch and not sold out. I went to Boomtown Fair last year, which, despite being aimed squarely at the Brighton/Bristol dreadlocks and trustfunds brigade, was actually very well executed, varied and a lot of fun. Tickets are into fifth tier now though unfortunately.

Yeah, I'd be tempted by Green Man but it seems a bit tame. I've heard of like, two bands on the lineup for Supernormal but it seems good. Not sure it's exactly what I'm looking for sadly. Dammit, if only I was able to go to Bloc.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:17 (twelve years ago) link

Never been to Supernormal, think I was only made aware of it last year? And if you have loads of friends playing then I imagine we have at least a few friends in common...

Think the main one I'm howling with despair about missing is Sylvester Anfang II - I've still never seen them, whereas most of the bands who I think are awesome I have at least seen one or two or more times before.

emil.y, Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

do not despair! sylvester anfang are playing at the albert or somewhere in august, remember seeing them on the resident listings the other day

So this seems to be the only apt thread in which I can celebrate the fact that my band are playing Supernormal this year. Whoop!

http://www.supernormalfestival.co.uk/

emil.y, Thursday, 6 March 2014 15:25 (ten years ago) link

I only heard about Supernormal straight after I bought tickets to Boomtown Fair which is a bit of a posho dreadfest but I've a lot of friends going (my mate's band is playing) and to be fair once you get over the initial shock of having to hang out in a field with tie-dye types is actually a lot of fun.
I'm also going to this the following week: https://www.atpfestival.com/events/jabberwocky2014.php which looks great except it's in the fucking Excel centre in the middle of August. Somehow I don't equate seeing Electric Wizard in the sweltering summer heat of a corporate exhibition hall...

inside out trousers (dog latin), Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:19 (ten years ago) link

I will go to Supernormal next year for sure though.

inside out trousers (dog latin), Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:20 (ten years ago) link

There is word on the grapevine that this might actually be the last Supernormal, but I've only heard it via rumour mill, no official sources. So it could be bunkum.

emil.y, Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:30 (ten years ago) link

Damn. Why though? And if so what alternatives would there be? I think I only first heard about it last year and it's really great that a fest like that exists.

inside out trousers (dog latin), Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:31 (ten years ago) link

Oh wow, congratulations Emily!! Was actually looking at that yesterday and thinking about going for once, don't think I noticed your lot on the bill before though.

eardrum buzz aldrin (NickB), Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:35 (ten years ago) link

Not sure, as I say I've not heard it through official channels. Festivals do come and go, though, particularly in this climate of niche fests all over the place. There are a few other things I'd consider going to but the music is approached differently. Like, Sin Eater would share a few bands but it concentrates on the 'weird folk' element. Kind of giving up hope on getting on the Indietracks bill, which is a shame as I may end up not going this year if I don't.

And yeah, Jabberwocky looks pretty good, though Boomtown Fair looks like a nightmare.

xp thanks! Come!

emil.y, Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:37 (ten years ago) link

really can't say enough good things about Supernormal. thought I was done with things where you camped in a field for a weekend but I had such a good time last year. they sold all their early bird tickets in literally 15 minutes last week, although there might have been 10 of them or something for all I know

most of the stuff I read about Boomtown makes it sound objectively upsetting, as opposed to it not really being my thing

imago bantz and the deems context (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:45 (ten years ago) link

Oh, Dead Rat Orchestra are playing Sin Eater and they're great. I'd love to go to that.

inside out trousers (dog latin), Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:47 (ten years ago) link

No, Boomtown isn't really an Ilxor-friendly festival I can imagine. Mind you it's okay for a certain type of Glasto vibe you don't really get at Glasto much any more and I like reggae so... Anyway I'll stop defending it, I know it's a bit shoot...

inside out trousers (dog latin), Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:50 (ten years ago) link

i would like to go to a supernormal/sin eater type of festival. more interested in experimental/leftfield music as opposed to folky stuff. any other suggestions?

inside out trousers (dog latin), Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:51 (ten years ago) link

Sin Eater should be a festival made up exclusively of bands with SAW pun names

Smell & Quim
Minologue

DL, if you're into city centre things (which I would call 'weekenders' rather than 'festivals', just to distinguish) then Supersonic in Birmingham might be up yr street? It's another one I've always looked at but never made: http://www.supersonicfestival.com/

Or come to Colour Out of Space next time.

Or travel to Belgium for Kraak.

But I can't think of any other camping/chalet type festivals that meet your criteria at the moment.

emil.y, Thursday, 6 March 2014 16:58 (ten years ago) link

oh i'm not fussed about camping necessarily, but these look cool. Thanks E.

inside out trousers (dog latin), Thursday, 6 March 2014 17:12 (ten years ago) link

Oh I should go to Supernormal seeing as I live like ten miles away, but I don't do camping, so I've spent the past 3 years being grumpy because I thought it was in a village with no public transport after 5pm and no B&Bs, except it is actually possible to get off the site after dark after all apparently, or so someone only told me last month.

(I just didn't realise that partly because in the first year they didn't list any transport/B&B options on their website but mainly because I am dumm.)

Kind of old lazy for the festival thing now though but maybe it will be fine if I tell myself it's just two all-dayers in a row, in an inconvenient location, with mud and not very good toilets

Yeah, the Cambridge thing looks good and Supernormal has some fairly unmissable acts on at it (Sarah Angliss, Sam Underwood, Richard Dawson, Graham Dunning to name but a few). As usual, I have managed to avoid all of them by working too hard.

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 4 August 2014 13:55 (ten years ago) link

Nick! Yay! I am now playing twice at Supernormal, though you probably won't want to see the first act I'm playing with as, hmm, I'm pretty sure you don't dig his stuff. Everything is clashing horribly badly with everything else, too, though not sure it's something I can get mad about as I want to see a good 90% of the acts, so of course it's going to clash.

That Wysing Arts thing *does* look really great, too.

Good! Think we played well, the other bands were great, people came and we actually sold records, so about as good as you could hope for, really. I played so craply at Indietracks, though, think the heat and the pints of wine didn't work together so well - we still went down pretty well, figure that's the joy of a six-piece, everyone else can cover for me, heh.

*must remember you can't take glass bottles onto Supernormal site*

mark e, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 16:53 (ten years ago) link

Boomtown has its fair share of white dreadlocks, tribal tattoos and electro-swing LARPer-types but it's also one of the most imaginatively executed ways to spend a long weekend. They turn the Matterley Bowl into a literal toon-town you can wander around with built facades hiding areas you can go into with live actors. There's a big onus on fancy dress/dressing fancy which initially put me off, but it's best to just hang up your inhibitions and embrace it. There's funfair rides and it's got the Arcadia spider too which is def worth a watch. Some of the stages are incredible-looking as well - a giant temple in the Lion's Den area, a pirate ship, a wild west area and a huge stage-cum-boombox elsewhere. The music wasn't necessarily up my street - lots of comedy klexmery folky shite fogging up the place, but when it comes to dub and reggae there's enough to fill your boots and I especially enjoyed the Wailers and Easy Stars. It had a reputation for being a very druggy festival but more recently they've clamped down. Weed is tolerated on the whole, but that's it, and they do have a family area now too.

Been twice now and both times I was ready to cringe and have a bad time but as soon as I've gotten there I've found myself overwhelmed at how exciting and vibrant the whole thing is.

3kDk (dog latin), Thursday, 14 August 2014 13:31 (ten years ago) link

if the CB line up is crap next year, then this sounds like a definite contender for me and the kids.

I, (dog latin), Friday, 20 February 2015 14:02 (nine years ago) link

it's on the same site as last year

it's relatively small and very friendly and my impression is that you can go there and be relatively sedate and/or with kids, or spend most of the weekend getting wrecked, without either group having its enjoyment spoiled by the other
