yeah i saw the McDonald's commercial during the Olympics Womens Free Skate. It was really bizarre- a man playing with a baby and you could here the beginning of "new slang" in the background. i had no idea it was a Mcdonald's commercial till the very end when they showed that McDonalds "smile" symbol. it was kind of disturbing really. but does anyone know how this may have happened? because some bands sell their music to a licensing agency not knowing where it will go. My guess is that the Shins didn't intend for "new slang" ending up as a McDonalds promotion.

Maybe it wasn't really The Shins. I mean, I hope to God that James Mercer is making better management decisions than that. We could get lucky and find out that it was something else.

Why does this bother anyone? There are literally thousands of songs used in commercials and they run for a few weeks or months and that's it. There's nothing special or shocking to me about The Shins popping up in a McDonalds commercial. Sometimes it's even exciting, like when Acura used "Instrumental" by Galaxie 500 to pretty cool effect.

I won't lie and say I haven't fallen for it (McDonald's) but it's a damn shame that the shins have sold out to supercorporate craziness.

how is it selling out if they havent changed their writing process? they sold the song for profit, what's the harm?
