Sorry about the bump, but i think the one american football album is noteworthy enough to excuse it. I love it, and Owen makes amazing music as well. I just wish there was more american football

i reeealy liked their album at the time. Been quite a while since i've given it a listen, though.
― one time, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 10:15 (sixteen years ago) link
It sort of fits into the type of music I was listening to back then.
― CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link
This album was my jam. I should listen to it again.
― jonathan - stl, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 21:40 (sixteen years ago) link
wow, did not think these guys would have another album in 'em
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 00:54 (eight years ago) link
Pretty excited about the new album. Saw them play last year and it was a bit of a weird one, hearing those songs played by an active band rather than them just being a recorded document of something long gone. They were great. My copy of the new Owen LP finally turned up yesterday so it was a good Kinsella-related day for me.
― michaellambert, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 10:02 (eight years ago) link
At first I was hugely disappointed in the new record. There was no 'The Summer Ends' or 'For Sure' but I kept listening and now it sounds like warm soup on a cold day. I really love it.
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 02:07 (seven years ago) link
LPII is Owen as played by American Football and that is more than fine with me.
― michaellambert, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link
How would you rate Owen's records? I stopped listening after 'At Home.'
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 15:35 (seven years ago) link
I can understand why you stopped with 'At Home...' but the subsequent ones are good. 'Other People's Songs' is a good fun diversion, 'L'Amour...' I thought was excellent and 'The King of Whys' is very good, just overshadowed by the existence of AFII.
My preference will always probably be slightly for everything up to '(the EP)', but overall I think it's a good, solid, consistent catalogue.

Apparently Rachel Goswell guests as well. I like that track, wasn't familiar with their 1999 emo debut.

that song in particular nails the feeling of driving through miles of nothing while listening to ... red house painters? yeah
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 21:48 (five years ago) link
so i'd never actually listened to these guys til silhouettes, and i loved that song so much that i went back and listened to the debut, and loved THAT so much that i listened 10x straight.

Gorgeous. Hope this signals a big old American Football / Land of Talk tour

Agreed. After her time away, hope for many more LoT releases to come.

i kinda think the first album is overrated so this is absolutely my favorite american football record
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 March 2019 14:48 (five years ago) link
Yes it's very good. It kinda sounds like the alt universe version of the Copeland album I'm actually down with.
― Simon H., Thursday, 14 March 2019 15:01 (five years ago) link
the lyrics are earnest to the point of goofy sometimes but... i like that

yeah the lyrics are good, straightforward and confessional but not outright oversharing/gross/uncomfortable

this is just the right amount of old school emo magic for me. also lovely production.

i think my favorites are "heir apparent" and "mine to miss" but every song here is so rich
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 22 March 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link
i still can't figure out where they found the time to become an actual band. this album is incredibly well-realized, detailed, and thoughtful.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 22 March 2019 19:09 (five years ago) link
Just finishing up my first listen and this feels like a proper American Football Album, rather than Owen as Played by American Football (which I was fine with).
Really beautiful stuff.
― michaellambert, Friday, 22 March 2019 19:16 (five years ago) link
really like the slightly expanded instrumentation on this album, quite possibly better than the debut
― ufo, Friday, 22 March 2019 23:12 (five years ago) link
I really liked this but vaguely suspicious of how easy it slipped down. Would have been happy for some glass in the bolus or a crescendo.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Saturday, 23 March 2019 20:27 (five years ago) link
Has this completely drifted by? Stumbled on it today and it's really working; what I had considered to be (pejoratively) becalmed resignation feels directional and apposite. I think I'm here for the long haul.
― Life is a meaningless nightmare of suffering...save string (Chinaski), Wednesday, 6 November 2019 18:11 (four years ago) link
I've listened to this again recently, it's probably my favourite album of 2019.

The AF album was my favorite of last year. Recently picked up all the Owen albums I was missing, and finding them perfect housebound music. _L'ami du Peuple_ playing now. Pre-ordered the new album, The Avalanche, off Polyvinyl. Now just have to wait for it and new Land of Talk albums to arrive, and that's 20% of my 2020 Top 10 likely solved.
