Anyone else heard the Beyond Hamsterdam album? I've enjoyed Darkroom's stuff before (they once sent me a bunch of stuff when I was writing about The Wire music for my college paper a few years ago), but this seems cleaned up for a wider audience. One of the things I loved about Hamsterdam (Best of Baltimore) was how rough it sounded, and how it seemed almost cobbled together.
Though the music is great. I do like the other Wire soundtrack more (tho PFM is right: 5 Down in the Hole's *is* too many)

i already made a thread for it (although you can discuss it here too obviously): 2 official soundtracks to HBO's The Wire out in January
don't necessarily know what you mean about "cleaned up for a wider audience," though, the 4 Darkroom-produced tracks are exactly as they appeared on the Hamsterdam mixtapes, as are the 4 or 5 other tracks I'd heard on other local releases before. but then, I guess taking any song out of the context of an 80-minute mixtape full of voice mail interludes and putting it into a concise 40-minute compilation will probably make it sound a little different.

That's exactly what I meant by 'cobbled together.' Listening to the mixtapes was sort of (for me) about the experience of aurally submerging in that particular scene. (If that makes any sense.)
― Mordechai Shinefield, Sunday, 13 January 2008 06:50 (sixteen years ago) link
oh, it makes sense, i aurally submerge myself in that particular scene on a daily basis. Darkroom definitely make some of the least cobbled together-sounding mixtapes around here, though.

5. DJ Khaled ft. Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Big Boi, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, Birdman & Rick Ross – “I’m So Hood”

The N.O.R.E. is simply a good N.O.R.E. album, short and sweet, with a lot of good fake Neptunes beats and some killer punchlines. Also goes for the Redman, which was like 26.
As for Khaled posse cuts, they're just very 2007 to me. Shoegaze keyboards and every top rapper bringing their A- and B+ game. What's not to love?

And "Brown Paper Bag" by Khaled ft. Everyone is better than all of them! It made my Pazz & Jop ballot because I thought it was a single (but it turns out it wasn't).

i realize there are 8 dudes on there but saying there are "only" 3 good verses on a song is pretty funny (although I like Jeezy's too and Wayne's is kinda growing on me).
whiney gets props for having one of the only year-end lists besides mine that has "Duffle Bag Boy" or "All The Above" on it. dudes putting "Throw Some D's" in '07 still get a late pass, though.
― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 13 January 2008 16:18 (sixteen years ago) link
"Throw Some D's" was my number 39 on my 2006 list. It blew up in 2007 and I treated it as such.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 13 January 2008 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link
By the end of 2006, I was like "Hmmm... this is interesting"
By March of 2007, I was like "This is amazing!"
It was a slow burner for me. And for America too since it really took three months to blow up, not like Lip Gloss, which exploded the second it hit a speaker.

fine should i say that only 37% of the verses are good??? the other major problem is that they're all in a row so there's no incentive to finish the song esp. if involves verses from rick ross, birdman and fat joe.
(i listened to this again and actually jeezy's verse is pretty good)
