should have guessed. I'd like to know where to find it too.

fyi , this album is available by mail order from force tracks...

here's the release info (sorry for those who already get mail from ft):

--

Almost two and a half years after his first album, "Vocalcity" (Force
Tracks), Vladislav Delay returns with Luomo to explore new dimensions in
upfront vocal house. "The Present Lover" is a self-confessed outsider's
perspective on the club scene, seamlessly blending pop and club elements to
deliver a cunningly original take on pop, house and R&B, replete with
meticulous arrangements and seductive vocals.

Driven by an ever-present inner restlessness, the 26-year-old recently
relocated to Berlin. He remains on the move, constantly performing at
countless clubs and festivals around the world. A man of many guises, the
tireless producer and remixer deconstructs techno as Uusitalo, explores
experimental sound design as Vladislav Delay, and has plans to blunt hip hop
with an as yet unnamed future project.

Always hungry for new experiences, this time around Delay delves headfirst
into what he describes as a fruitful love/hate relationship with his
surroundings. Deceivingly light and upbeat upon first listen, flirting with
dub and soul as much as minimal house influences, consequent listens reveal
"The Present Lover" as an album with hidden depth. Seductively smooth and
extremely well produced, improvisation remains integral. With his uncanny
talent for making the innermost audible, Delay invites us to peel away the
layers of producer's sheen, to uncover well-concealed errors, carefully
placed breaks and tutters
that bore their way into the listener's ears.

Following the extremely successful advance vinyl release of "Diskonize
Me/Body Speaking", which last year reached no. 1 on the Deutsch club charts,
the album capitalizes on the energy generated on "Vocalcity" by mixing
dub-worthy frequencies, ethereal whispers, and Delay's singular take on
epic, infectious grooves. This album harkens back to the early
days of disco without ever wavering in its responsibility to the future of
deep house.

Johanna Niemela and Watkinson, vocalists on the first Luomo album, reprise
their roles behind the mic, while the unmistakable voices of Antye
Greie-Fuchs (Laub) and Danish songwriting genius Raz O'Hara deliver an as
yet unforeseen edge to the production. "The Present Lover" also contains a
completely reworked version of "Tessio", which Mathias Schaffhäuser (Ware
Records) called a "hymn for eternity". The track will be released this
spring, with devastatingly funky new mixes by
Moonbootica and Akufen.

Quietly intense yet intensely physical, this is distilled sensuality with a
twist, intelligent music that works above and below the belt. >From its icy
exterior to its red-hot core, from its eclectic minimalism to its disturbing
funkiness, "The Present Lover" waltzes unabashedly into your stereo, messes
with the settings, and leaves you wondering if you'll have to wait another
two and half years for the next Luomo album.

On stage the ostensibly shy Finn turns into an extrovert performer because
"music still feels the best way to express myself, mirror myself and lose
myself in. I'd love to walk around Tokyo, listening to Jazz on a personal
stereo. The contrast between the hectic visual onslaught and complex rhythm
patterns would be amazingly inspirational

Despite my love for the actual record, I'm going to borrow a phrase from Ned to describe my reaction to this sentence: IT THREATENS TO RIP OUT MY SOUL AND SEND IT WAILING INTO THE ABYSS!

Fucking dud shit on a shingle craptastic fucking crapness from the void of poo. Not that I'm overstating or anything. (Good citation there, Spencer. ;-))

Hey TIM!

At the start of the Tessio video - there is a shot of the new William Gibson NOVEL! Right after the subtitle 'Dream' - Coincidence?

I was wondering who actually sings on Luomo records. Who is the mystery woman with the breathless voice who sings most of the songs? Is she given credit on the new album? And is that Antye Greie-Fuchs (AGF)on 'Talk in danger'?

Omar (Omar), Friday, 23 May 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

The voice behind most tracks is Johanna Iivanainen (formerly Niemelä). Vocalcity´s vocals were also done by her..And yes, that´s Antaye Greie-Fuchs on "Talk In Danger".

greg moniét, Friday, 23 May 2003 11:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, Antye Greie-Fuchs is now just Antye Greie. Still records as AGF though. (No, I know no-one cares, but hey, I'm a stickler for detail/trivia.)

Revive. This is fairly available on Soulseek now. Go get it. Pitchfork just reviewed it, and sold it a little short IMO.

It's like discovering house music all over again. I haven't been this thrilled with repetitive beats since More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 4 July 2003 05:52 (twenty years ago) link

i think dom's review was good - at least he was upfront about his previous aversion to house - but then again i have a hard time seeing who they'd give it to, other than maybe nitush or mark richardson, both of whom seem to circle around the genres edges.

they have a long way to go before redeeming themselves for the rooty review, however

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 July 2003 06:00 (twenty years ago) link

Wow. I hadn't read that before. He apparently doesn't like Sex Style either, which is two points off -- one for having no sense of humor, and one for referencing an album that has nothing whatsofuckingever to do with the one he's reviewing.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 4 July 2003 06:06 (twenty years ago) link

Actually the whole review has nothing whatsofuckingever to do with anything. Jeez -- can't you turn review assignments down? Can't you say, "No, sorry, I have no idea what I'm talking about"?

Yeah but here in the States where that techno shit is everywhere you go -- well, someone's gotta slay the behemoth!!

This is a superb album though i have one problem with it - at the beginning of "what good" the way the vocal has been cut up makes the vocalist {raz?} sound like a south park character - maybe cartman - has anyone else notived this? it really annoys me!

I fell asleep last week with a mix cd playing in my earphones, and woke up with the cooing throat-noise part of "Body Speaking" all echoey and wet in my ears. I was hard as a rock.

This is when I truly began to appreciate Luomo.

two weeks pass...
I really like this piece - it nails The Present Lover surprisingly quickly and easier (though not enough, probably, to satisfy the doubting Thomases, but then nothing ever does). I had actually been struck by the similarities between Fever and The Present Lover - they frequently share that too-ecstatic quality. My vision of what Kylie's follow-up should be like was something a bit like the poppier moments of The Present Lover, even before I'd heard that record.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:23 (twenty years ago) link

so what about the admission that he's moving in a more "R&B" direction with the next one? it seems like the "logical" step oddly enough, given most of the present lover, his general ambivalence towards electronic dance culture, and the basic pre-house predilections he's always going on about in interviews. (even vocalcity in its way now can kind of be seen as a post-glitch update on disco-funk.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:27 (twenty years ago) link

(though i do have this feeling that the more he moves towards "proper song form" [or even just "proper song length"] the less interested i will get.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:28 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I was thinking that myself -- without saying I'm a Luomo expert, I was imagining this shift and finding it sorta meh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:31 (twenty years ago) link

Well I sort of agree with that even though I love The Present Lover - it's one of those midpoint in a trajectory moments I think.

You can see the same thing with Kylie going in the other direction - Fever was midpoint in a trajectory between Light Years and Body Language and is much better than both.

"Mirrorball" is an interesting example of an alternative direction Luomo might have gone in with the second album - more minimal but also housier.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:38 (twenty years ago) link

i'm not writing him off completely, of course; i just worry that his idea of "r&b" is going to be anita baker or mid-80s luther vandross rather than destiny's child or (even) jagged edge.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:41 (twenty years ago) link

Luther Vandross is possibly a better direction than, like, Spacek or something though. It's hard to say.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:48 (twenty years ago) link

Who was Luther's producer then anyway? Hm, an AMG question...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:49 (twenty years ago) link

marcus miller

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:51 (twenty years ago) link

yeah one of the things that i liked (not liked) about the present lover was when the opulence/cheese meter kind of went off the scale ("visitor", the female vox on "what good").

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:51 (twenty years ago) link

...heh, shoulda guessed, he self-produced, though with some sort of session god called Marcus Miller as coproducer.

Dammit xpost. But I provided the link!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:52 (twenty years ago) link

"visitor" still makes me cringe a little bit after a few dozen listens, though it's undeniably beautiful in its way.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:52 (twenty years ago) link

what he told me was that he really digs the vocal science in modern R&B (he mentioned Brandy and JT), that they're the easiest way to add a 'soulful' or organic dimension to music and he wants to find new ways to use them. i'm not sure he's going all the way to the songful "real" side, he seems more engaged by how that's implied in modern R&B. anyway, he just finished this one, cut him some slack guys ;]

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

he "just" finished The Present Lover almost two years ago, if that's what you're referring to.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

is is just me or does "the present lover" lack the forward propulsion of "vocalcity"? i'm glad it's finally released here so now i can go pick it up. i downloaded it awhile back and deleted it pretty quickly, but my memory of it is that it's much more similar to his vladislav delay stuff (multi-dimensional texture overload).

he's playing here in a couple of weeks and i can't decide if i should go hear him or not

off to read the matos' review...
