"so much noise 2 be heard" has a definite sheffield bleep/early 90s warp/b12 vibe that i approve

Loved his DJing so much when I saw him. Have a feeling he may be one if those DJs that plays a lot of the same tunes, but I could be wrong. Hs anyone seen him a few times?

my favourite so far is the "the invisible children" 12" under his IAMTHATIAM moniker. picked mine up for cents from hhv.de and i think they still have stock. white noise super reverb'd godflesh beats with sci-fi george benson synth action oozing gaseously. he's gone a bit clean & digi recently but this is a super hissy warm fuzz.romance of 2 planets 12" also melts my tiny mind

Damn, seems to be out of stock now I look!

ok so catchup comp for the herbs or whatever but after a slow opening where things seem a little grating and annoying, suddenly you look up and find you've been floating entranced in future-space for forty-five minutes

To be honest I've not been that impressed by his own material but he's one of the best DJs I've ever seen (and I'm seeing him again tomorrow :D)

re the new album, 'the discos of imhotep' via ninja tune .. was interested to hear this due to the promo blurb.however, it's very painful to listen to.distorted/compressed to shit.thought it was a problem with the mp3s provided, so checked out the stream.same.obviously an artistic statement.i am probably getting too old for this nu-era electronica, as i can constantly hear myself declaring 'this is just noise'.

As opposed to his normal stuff?
This sounds pretty standard from his production aesthetic. Pumping, cassette saturation perhaps. Sounds very lovely to me.

the harshness of a lot of his stuff is pretty unique to him, don't think i'd take it as a nu era of electronica or an indication that you're too old, using the term electronica otoh...

Can’t find the rest of the album anywhere though.
― Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 30 June 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link
fair enough.
not heard anything prior to the new album so had no idea this was part of his aesthetic ..
i just could not listen to it - and i really tried - honest.
― mark e, Thursday, 30 June 2016 20:25 (seven years ago) link
yeah, i get ear fatigue if i listen to him for too long, the distortion sort of sharpens the high end, it's prickly. i do love certain tracks, though

i always have to adjust the EQ when i play HB

Discos of Imhotep very, very good -- kind of slept on I think? Not really surprising given his general profile, but I can listen to stuff for ages.
As far as the distortion, it doesn't actually sound like over-compression to me. It sounds like he's just pumping too much sound in, and whatever interface he's using to record can't handle it (especially on the kick drum). Not sure if this is all analog or not, but I bet if he was working w/a pro-engineer, they could figure out a way to EQ and/or mix this in a way that would smooth it out. Not that I need that, but it's a pretty common thing for DIY music, and maybe he's just keeping to that aesthetic.

can’t pretend I’ve got any real handle on this guy’s oeuvre but the new one is super nice
